  • In this video, I need to prepare my Amaryllis and Clivia for winter dormancy. They need a period of cool, dark and dry conditions to help them bloom for the following year.

    I have a clivia that I grow indoors. It currently has 8 lleaves with a 9th emerging. It's not ready to bloom yet. My question is if ALL Clivia Miniatas regardless of age need a dormancy period. Great informative video, thanks!

      My understanding is that the temperature has more to do with blooms than the dormancy

    I think if they’re in their pots (planted) is when you should put them on their side, otherwise if it’s just the bulb I don’t think it matters, but hopefully yours bloom big and great!

    I am an experienced ornamental gardener and I agree with your method of winter dormancy for amaryllis and clivia. However, you must live in the northern part of our country because you said to give them full sun in the growing season. This is incorrect for the other half of us that live in zones 7 and above. Full uninterrupted sunlight will burn both these species. Just want to pass this on to your readers.

      Thank you so much,, that is so good to know, Yes I live in Chicago where they take full summer sun with no issue!

      What do you think about where I live? I live in Perth Australia, Meditranian Weather, shall I keep them under the direct hot sun in the summer?

      Perhaps I can someday, I don’t keep many anymore but I still have success getting them to bloom. Mine always go outside in the sun for the summer

    What temperature is your basement? My basement is heated so I'm not sure it qualified as cool enough? It seems good for begonia bulbs and dahlia tubers but I've ready elsewhere that it should be about 10-12 (Celsius) for amaryllis bulbs. I have a high low thermometer so I know it's about 18 on average give or take a couple degrees. I also have a mini fridge set to the highest temperature that I use for bulbs (it's about 6 degrees). Any thoughts which enviroment my amaryllis would fair better in?

      Angela, I am so so sorry that I missed this comment, the basement was a steady 50-55 degrees. Hope you're doing well ! - Casey

    What do I do with an amaryllis bulb if I don’t know its history? It was given to me late fall and it has one leaf on it. I was told to keep it in a sunny location inside and water it normally. But I think it should go into dormancy and be brought out in three months. What is correct?

    Do your plants have the tall stems? We planted some. the stems were about 6 inches tall. What causes them to be short. Will planting to deep do this. I'm in zone 8a.

      I am in zone 5 so it could just be that mine are in a different climate, I always plant mine close to the surface.

      @@GetGardening Thanks. Checked ours. They seem to be to deep. Will be replanting when the leaves die back.

    Hi Casey, I acquired 3 very large Clivia plants this summer. I'm in zone 6, they are now in my heated dark basement. I have not watered them since bringing them indoors in October 20th. I noticed the leaves are yellowing. Am I winterizing them correctly?

    • @GetGardening
      @GetGardening  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, they actually look pretty terrible after the three months, you can give them a little bit of water if necessary. You are trying to mimic drought like conditions, so a tiny bit of water couldn't hurt, but last year i didn't give mine a drop of water and they were fine!!! Let me know how they do!!
