- It’s that time again! Time to place your amaryllis into dormancy. Here is my amaryllis growing calendar.
Jan - Feb: Plant blooms on a bright windowsill, water if needed, fertilize
March - May: Remove spent blooms, keep on a bright windowsill, water if needed, fertilize.
May - June: Plant outside. If kept in pots - place outside. Max sun is 4 hours. Fertilize.
August - September: Lift bulbs, place in cool and dry location.
November - December: Clean bulbs, plant in pots. Start watering. Place in warm, bright spot.

Mine lives outside. Its leafs die down in winter and spring right up in spring and flowers within a few weeks. I didn’t even know what the name was until I came across these videos. Now I know I can dig one up for a house plant. Thank you 🙏

Great video. I brought mine in about 2 weeks ago, and it is so reassuring to see I did them the same way. The only difference is mine were in big pots instead of the ground, because I have heavy clay soil, and we sometimes get a lot of rain (annual average in my zone 7a Virginia location is 48” of rain and 16” of snow-and no, I am NOT complaining about the precipitation!). Looking forward to seeing how they perform this winter after I bring them up from the basement.

I live in south Louisiana. Zone 8bish. We leave ours in the ground year round. They do not need a dormant period to bloom from what I’ve seen. Mine grow all year long until a cold snap. The foliage dies back and the foliage immediately starts growing again. They do this for the winter months and then spring comes and they bloom no matter what. So my point is, they aren’t picky about dormancy. Just need to be out of extreme cold (28’F)
👍 same here. The leaves "dry" during the Winter and during the Spring they start growing again. I live in Europe and in my region is not much cold or warm, in winter its usually don't go under -3°C/26.6°F
For the folks who have it in the ground, do amaryllis blooms once a year or more?
I live in Oklahoma and we've had some cold winter the last two years, I'm taking about 0°f for two weeks in a row. Now to be honest they are protected from north wind from the house. They haven't died and last season I dug my oldest plant which was about 4 years in the ground to separate them. That had Six bulbs and I replanted them and they all flowered this season.
That's why we should ask ourselves how important is it to get blooms in the Winter. I live in Canada (zone 3) and have grown Amaryllis for over 10 years. I used to try and get them to bloom for Christmas/New Year's time with little success. But with patience, I have learned to bide my time, and my Amaryllis plants are part of my Spring Patio Garden. I get multiple flower spikes 2-3 times during the Spring and Summer. By Labor Day I put them in my garage for a week or so to dry after a watering with diluted hydrogen peroxide. Then inside they come for the winter. Sometimes I put them in my cold room in the basement. While the small guys will stay green in their pots in an empty room that gets plenty of sun to keep bulking up.

Two winters ago I bought some red flowering one from Lowes that were marked down . They had wax on the bulbs . I looked them up on the web site that was on the card and it said just throw them away when they stop blooming. Well I said nope I’m gonna experiment. So I watered three of them during the rest of the winter . Then in spring I had some roots starting to grow . No soil just a little water. So 2021 spring we took the wax off and planted them in a tree size pot . They grow like crazy. All leaves no blooms. Well I’m in NC so I left them out side they wintered over and in March I saw bloom buds popping up . Y’all we still had frost . So on nights it was to frost I coved them . They bloomed the most beautiful deep red . 10 times prettier and larger than the blooms a few had when I bought them . They were small blooms when I got them ,but when they bloomed this spring they where the size of my hand . I had one that was orange but it didn’t make it . The one I was hoping so much that would . I also bought more from Walmart and dollar general last winter and they bloomed in the house beautiful. I had one from Walmart that was named tinker bell . It bloomed in Dec or Jan and then bloomed again during the summer, I was surprised. So we see how they do the winter out side and then see how many beautiful blooms I have in the spring. Ole at dollar general they had just a plain single white one . So I bought it for ten dollars. Y’all. When it bloomed I had a double white bloom . I was so surprised. So I bought another one and it was a double to . My mom has a beautiful pink and white not sure of the name , it was a gift many years ago . I brought some home and they bloomed the same time my red did that had the wax removed. I cross breed them . So I have a few babies to come up from there seeds . So it will be interesting to see what I made . Lol

I'm on my first (would you believe at nearly 70 ?) experiments with bulbs that were gifts.. one waxed bulb from my mother- in- law in Holland... (where it's more of a tradition than here in France) to have these lovely flowers blooming around Christmas..
I overwintered some bulbs last year & one surprised me by giving beautiful flowers... the bulb from Holland was a waxed one, & l took the wax off & planted it out in the spring... we'll see what happens when l get these 3 bulbs in ..probably when the leaves die back.

Perfect timing for this video. I put my amaryllis in the ground this summer for the first time. Some of them are huge. I've dug them and need to get them in the basement in the dark. I'll be looking for your next video when you pot yours up.

I'm zone 7a NJ. I have 2 Hardy Amaryllis Alaska that I planted in the ground May 2021. I planted them like I plant my daffodils 7" deep. They came back just fine. I have 12 Hippeastrum (Amaryllis) I bought over the last 3 years from Lowe's, Home Depot and Walgreens. I usually dig them up mid November. Store them until May in my garage. This year I planted 6 in my garden about 8" deep. I want to see how they survive the winter. The other 6 I will do what I've been doing for the last few years: removed the soil and put them in a opened cardboard box until the leaves start to die back. At that point I will cut back the roots & leaves. Then wrap the closed box with a blanket. And into the garage until May.

I did not cut leaves and put them in the cold basement in original pots.
The soil was dry, I did not water them for 2 months. Unfortunately they did not lose green leaves. It’s November 8 today.
Wondering what to do with them?
I feel that they did not get proper dormancy. Should I cut the leaves, and put in in a fridge for few week?
I have been taking my amaryllis through the seasons for many years now, and I always remove the strappy leaves once I bring them into the basement from having spent the summer outside. I don’t believe tou mentioned removing your leaves--or did I miss it? Anyway, at least for me, making sure the bulbs are extremely dry and the leaves are cut off are by far the two most important aspects of the dormancy period for my amaryllis.
Have you found something to plant in the holes where the amaryllis was that has a similar life cycle? When do you plant the amaryllis back out?

Is that the same method for putting elephant ears in dormancy? I brought my potted one indoors last fall but am considering not having it take up so much space this winter and would like to just store the tuber or bulb.

It looks so easy to dig them up in your environment… in TX they get mushy during the summer with high heat then continuous rain. I luv them but they don’t love me.😅

How do you treat the babies when you put the mother bulb to dormancy? Cut them off or leave them on?
Near coast zone 9 in California we don’t have to dig them up, either.

Wow that's a lot of work. Here in zone 9 they stay in the ground and naturalize abundantly. Unfortunately, your ground freezes. Thanks Yuliya for charing your experience.

When the bulbs naturalize in ground, does that mean you continue to water the bulbs and not force them into dormancy?

Do you put the bulbets into dormancy too? One of my bulbs has 6 bulbets growing off of it. I’ve separated from the parent, but since they are not going to bloom, should I repot and overwinter indoors?
Is this done so you can get blooms around Christmas indoors? I have some of these in our yard, and we dont dig them up each year, and they have been coming back each year. we are in West Texas though...zone 7.
I actually prefer them blooming in January when nothing else is going on. to bloom at the end of December dig a bit earlier.
We don’t need to dig them up here in Spain 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great timing! I'm putting mine into dormancy for the 1st time this year - I did keep them in pots over summer, so I'll just bring those in and let them dry out as you suggested. I do have a quick question - where did you plant them outdoors in terms of exposure - part sun? shade? I'm thinking this may be much easier for me next year instead of using pots, as I kept forgetting about them and let the soil dry out for a bit too long a few times. Thanks!

If you are north of zone 8 you can lift them and store for winter
2 years since the first bloom. No bloom 2021 and this year just leaves so far. The bulb is big but alas no bud. Both times I put in bottom of refrigerator. Six weeks and this time 4. Apt. No yard or house so no cool basement.
beautiful bulbs. how do you prepare the soil in the garden for your Amaryllis? I live in Redlands CA. My garden soil is sandy. last year I mixed potting soil to the yard soil to plant my amaryllis and fertilized them but the bulbs got very small.
I add a lot of organic matter. Compost, well rotted manure (chicken, cow), shredded leaves, mulch. Soil takes time to build over time but now I have the fluffiest most rich soil. I do fertilize these about once a month in summer
@@greatgardensforall Thank you. I will do that. This time I already prepared the soil about the same . I mix potting soil amendment soil, chicken manure and perlite. I purchased new amaryllis bulbs. I will plant them in pots and fertilize them every month in summer. I will start working on my garden soil, maybe one day it will be like yours. Thank you again and have a great blessed day.

Many of my amaryllis have started to rebloom outdoors. Should I wait till they're finished and then dig and store them? I'm in zone 4.
I would wait yes. But make sure you put them away before cold weather!

Do you have hoverfly maggots that eat out the core of the bulb? I've tried insecticides and screens with mixed results. Any suggestions?

Watching this video for the fourth time. I have limited sunny garden space, but I want to grow my amaryllis in the garden. Would they be a better fit in my iris bed, which is dry with 8+ hours of sun or my rose bed 5 hours of sun which is irrigated?
Also when it never gets cold here in coastal AL. Can you refrigerate them instead of putting them in basement?
Do not refrigerate ! Being dry is more important for them than being cold 😊
Where do you recommend getting the amaryllis bulbs?
Lowe’s or Home Depot sells them around Christmas every year pretty inexpensively $7 a bulb. Or Sams or Costco May sell them too. That’s where I got my white and pink ones. I bought my red ones from a neighbor off FB Marketplace.
Hi Yulia. I have been following along with you on this one. So the question is. Are you bringing your Amyrillis out of dormancy now in the first week of November (2months) our first week of December (3 months). I only have one bulb, so I want to get it right!! 😀

I plant them out so the bulbs bulk up and store a lot of energy to produce a flower. In the fall I place them into dormancy for 8-12 weeks, start watering and they bloom!
After they are dry do you cut off the roots and leaves before storing them for 2 to 3 months?
Yes, I am wondering the same. Do you remove leaves and roots when they dry out or right before planting in pots some time around Thanksgiving? Dug out mine and placed in the basement earlier this week!
At 4:40 she says not to cut leaves or roots.
At 4:40 she says she doesn't cut the leaves or roots before they're dry and then she "cleans them up." I just want to be sure what "cleans them up" means.
The storage period starts now. So 2 - 3 months from now clean up the bulb and plant in pot.

They are hardy to your area so you don't have to bring them indoors. Lucky you!

Mine always do better, bulk up more and bloom more profusely when planted in the ground.
I feel lucky coz i live in a subtropical climate... i don't need to dig them out.
Oh yeah. I have no idea where I planted my amaryllis. Totally forgot. I’m guessing they died because we had a nasty drought.
