    You have some very high quality gear, and very well thought out. However, I don't think I've ever seen anybody carry so much for a day hike.

    I’ve watched a lot, and I mean a lot of gear review videos. I just subscribed. I like Joe Robinet, but honestly, after this specific video, you’re my go-to guy for solid gear consideration with no unnecessary fluff. Well done! I’m not new to this lifestyle, but I’m always watching others to learn from their accomplishments, inventions, and most importantly; their mistakes! Lol

    Nice kit. I always carry at minimum enough gear to get me through a overnight trip. You just never know what may happen.

    Too much junk for a summer day hike, unless you are training for a long multi camping trip or hike in the mountains. First, you need to carry on your body a knife, compass & map, Firestarter, and your phone (if out of cell coverage, then the Garmin In reach, hand held UHF/VHF radio, or some other communications device). Some people also carry a small pocket survival kit and signaling device (nylon or silk panel, mirror, and chemlight). If you lose your pack, you need to survive the walk out or until someone comes for you. In your day pack, operative term here is "day", is water (and way to get more), more Firestarter, minimal shelter materials (tarp, cordage, bivy, perhaps a saw), high energy food (not half the pantry), environmental protection (sweater, fleece pullover, rain coat & pants, and small season appropriate sleeping bag if appropriate at all), small first aid kit (not half the emergency room), head lamp or flashlight, and anything else you need to spend the night. You're out there to enjoy nature, not sweat your butt off. If you don't have basic camping and survival skills, go get some. You don't need to carry REI on your back to enjoy a day hike in the woods.

    Looks like lots of stuff for a day hike. Plenty of stuff sacks and pouches. I guess you can survive with this a, few days if you get lost.
    Though it's still not too overwhelming. If purpose is being in the woods and playing with making fire, cooking outdoors etc then it's a cool kit possibly.

    What is the fascination with the Hidden Woodsmen Day Ruck? I see mention of them EVERYWHERE. Yes, it's a handsome bag, and by all accounts very well made. Please, anyone, make your best compelling argument as to why I might want to get one.

    A fellow addict...😎👍I uncontrollably buy lots of ultra lightweight hiking, camping & survival equipment. I can't quit and there is no support groups! Began on a High School Science summer backpacking trip to Rocky Mountains. Living out of a Basecamp @ the school bus & ancillary overnight hikes, living out of a backpack. Best thing the School District ever conducted for students interested in the natural sciences. Lifelong fond memories & was the start to being a gear junkie! Thanks for the revew!

    I liked your thinking about the twig stove using it as a twig stove or alcool stove , if you want a wood fire or not you have a choice..

  • @PaulSchortemeyer
    @PaulSchortemeyer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Wow - comprehensive and prepared for anything! It does seem like you have a lot of redundancy - 3 knives, 3 ways to cook, 3 compasses, 3 ways to purify water (incl fire), 5 or 6 fire starters, many pouches, etc. It's the age-old safety vs risk discussion, but I would be curious to see if you could pare that down a bit and still be happy out there. I tend towards a much leaner kit and if a piece of equipment fails - well, it was just a day hike anyway (-:

    Talk about overpacking! A day hike for me is run out of a haversack. My Dayruck is easily a weekend appliance. I use it around town more than for day hikes.

  • @Oldsparkey
    @Oldsparkey 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    WOW , that's a serious Day Rucksack. I would call it a small backpack. I don't pack as much but have the basics covered. All of it's in a Mountain Smith Day (13 liter ) Lumber pack. I find it very comfortable since there aren't any shoulder straps to interfere with my implanted Defibrillator/Pacer. ( right collar bone area )

      @PaleoHikerMD  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's funny because the comments on this video are either a) you packed WAY too much stuff, or b) You moron, you forgot this and this and this LOL. I appreciate your comment and admit that I carry alot, but that's my preference. You carry less, and just what you need! Thanks for the input, and thanks for watching!

    I realize that every jurisdiction is different, but is there any insurance plan available to cover the cost of an evacuation called in by an Inreach? Do the SAR organizations charge for this?

    • @PaleoHikerMD
      @PaleoHikerMD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is additional insurance you can pay with the subscription that covers I believe up to $50,000 out of pocket for an evacuation. Very affordable, $1.50 a month extra

    I really need to get me that Keith Ti canteen... I have the Hidden Woodsman Scout pack that I absolutely love but like you, I like bringing gear, even for a day hike. The Scout Pack can hold everything I want to bring with the Mods I added, but Titanium and UL gear is the only way it will be light enough to maintain the needed level of comfort while hiking. Really need that Orange pouch from Malcoms collection too! #gear #addict lol
