Malcolm told me where I could get the meat fork. I bought the sheath separately and I have the same setup. I have a few other things I am really happy with the service and quality. Glad to support a US company

I just purchased my first HW pack, the Model 23. Can’t wait to get it and use it. I recently ordered the LL Bean Continental rucksack but if Malcolm ever comes out with something similar I’ll make sure to order his as well. He makes excellent outdoor gear.

I'm a big fan. I have two, sometimes three, of almost everything from THW. I love supporting the company, and others like it, for all the reasons you mentioned.

I love the haversack. I bought one just a few months after he started his website. And, from the interactions I've had with Malcolm (emails), he's dedicated to his craft, and if you have ANY problem with one of his products, he is going to make it right.
It was no big deal. He'd forgotten to fold over and stitch down one of the seams (I don't sew, lol, hope that makes sense) so I was getting a lot of loose threads. I told him about it, and he IMMEDIATELY apologized and offered to make it right. It TRULY wasn't that big of a deal. I just wanted him to know, in case he had other bags that needed that seam sewn down, before shipping them out. So, I was very grateful for the offer, but declined.
This was several YEARS ago. The bag has held up to many years of me DRIFTING THE COUNTRY: hopping trains, walking cross-country for hundreds of miles, living for months at a time outside and in every weather imaginable (and every climate and ecosystem imaginable), and it's still kicking.
Malcolm, such is my understanding, is one of us. An outdoor nutter, lol. So, he knows first-hand, the kind of situations we outdoorsy-types will be in, and what we expect and need from our gear.
Now, I absolutely KNOW that his gear and customer service are as good as you can ever hope to find. Top notch, awesome.
ALL THAT BEING SAID, I do think the prices, especially for the haversack have gotten A WEE BIT out of hand. The gear and Malcolm are WORTH EVERY PENNY. Let me be very clear about that. This is a small business, and his gear and customer service outshine any large, conglomerate business, of any kind, that I've ever dealt with.
    BUT...
I think he needs to remember who got him there.
Hard work and dedication, sure. But, he was A COMPLETE UNKNOWN to anyone in the world except for a bunch of weirdo, outdoor, environmentally-conscious, hiker nuts; most of us with very little pocket cash, because we put all of our time and efforts into buying gear and paying for long thru-hikes, or months long camping expeditions, lol.
I'm VERY HAPPY for his success. And, I reiterate, the products and the man are worth the current pricing. But, I wish he'd have a few products that were still affordable to little guys and gals that helped get him where he is.
This is June, 2023. I was going to buy a second haversack. Mine is AWESOME, and holding up great. But, it's been living with me on the street, in high desert, a boreal rainforest, rugged mountains and any and all precipitation imaginable.
It has developed...... character. Lots of character, lol.
I plan on continuing to use it for my adventures, but wanted to swap over to a new one, which I would keep clean and pristine, for those times I actually feel like mingling with the normies in civilization. So, I went to Malcolm's website, clicked on the haversack link, and...
    😯
Uh... Houston? We have a problem.
All of my gear takes a beating. I live, the vast majority of my life, outdoors, by choice. I prefer living to existing. So, I don't really have many material possessions that I'm FOND of. Know what I mean? My Swiss Army Knife, my SOG Pillar belt knife, and Malcolm's haversack. Seriously. That's it. Those are the only three things that I'd be even remotely upset at losing. Yeah. His stuff is that good, lol.
    But... the current prices... OUCH!
As of June, 2023, as I write this, the haversack costs nearly as much as brand new SOG Pillar (about $150) AND Swiss Army Knife (about $45 for the one I use). It costs more than my 65L OSPREY hiking pack!!! Granted, I bought it a few years ago in a tiny Oklahoma town, but still!
    Nearly $200. For a haversack??!!
Malcolm, you have awesome gear, and you treat every customer like royalty. I'd give you $1,000 for a haversack, if I could. But, I'm just not able to do that. I love the haversack. But, push come to shove, I'm going to spend that kind of money on a new hiking pack, or hunting boots, or an all new cook set, or a new tent and insulated ground pad.
Nearly $200 is a lot of money. At least, it's a lot of money, for people like me. I know things are getting more expensive these days, but there are good haversack for less than half of your current pricing. Same materials. Same size. Well made. They probably don't have your love and knowledge of what we outdoor nuts like, or your excellent customer service, but... $60 vs close to $200.... that's a pretty big gap.
I CANNOT afford that. I WANT you too succeed! But, maybe you could make a simplified haversack. A big pouch, flap that can be tied around a large button, and that's it. Simple, well made, but far fewer materials and time to make, so a cheaper but quality alternative for people like me.
The gear and the man are awesome. Worth every penny. But, I just hate that many of us who were there from the beginning, are now unable to afford your products anymore.

I have most of the gear you covered. It’s so high quality. I told my sons that their grandsons will be able to use it. I can’t ever imagine it wearing out or failing. It’d be cool if he replicated some of the gear the old cowboys and horseman used, but with his high quality and modern materials.

I feel the same way. I have quite an extensive collection of Malcolm's gear myself and am somewhat addicted to his stuff, always waiting for what he comes out with next. I just ordered another Forest Ruck today in Fett green and 3 more possible pouches he put on sale. Great video Ernie. All the best.

No shit there I was. I bought some of his stuff at the blade show 2018. Well, I saved and saved and I was going to buy the Deepwoods ruck this year. But NO that damn beer had to crap all over my plans. So now, I had to spend the money I saved so some bullshit I did not want. Apparently, the wife wanted her car fixed. I told her she could walk but I got a really scary look so I fixed her car. Now I have saved up again, and I go to look on his site and the damn thing is out of stock. I can't catch a break. Better not say that too loud, my wife may want something else fixed like paint the walls. Doesn't she know that gear is important? Anyway, great video, and you have those shoulder straps on wrong. You just need to swap them. Happy trails.

Glad you are buying from local manufacturers to help keep them in business. Are the packs made from heavy duty canvas or a high denier nylon?

    A good review .. thanks.
I can see that it is good quality stuff. High quality gear LASTS! And .. Cost is NOT the Alpha-Omega in determining Quality and Longevity.
Decent Side Pockets .. 👍👍👍. This obsession that modern pack manufacturers have with these horrible little mesh side pockets that hold practically nothing 😖.
I have a 'Backpacker 'Boulder' 75 litre Pack. Bought back in the '70's in South Africa from Camp and Climb in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. Still going strong .. and .. it has SIDE POCKETS .. decent ones 😊.
    Take care ..

  • @msilverhammer

Ernie, everything you have is so clean, like hospital clean, or barely, or never been used clean. LOL
I think we all "suspect" by now that Ernie likes to "collect" gear, but he does not actually use it that much!
Hopefully I don't get blocked, banned, and blacklisted for my kidding, and comments!
Anyway, Hidden Woodsman makes very heavy gear, and not that practical for anyone who is going a long distance, and needs to carry gear, food, water.
Going for a day hike, or a short distance to chop some wood, no problem.
The ratio of carrying or storage capacity, to weight is not good compared to say a 60 liter pack made by Gossamer Gear, ULA, Gregory, Kelty, Granite Gear, Hyperlite Mountain Gear, Osprey, Outdoor Vitals, and Zpacks.
Most of these companies are using ultra light, yet very durable and water resistant, or waterproof materials like Dyneema, Spectra, Xpac, or Robic Nylon.
Some, but not all of these companies are also American cottage manufacturers, but all have operations in the United States, and some may assemble and import their packs form other countries.
Yes, Cordura is durable, but again heavy, and expensive, and it seems Malcolm charges a premium for his products.
As one commenter stated, there is a ton of heavy and durable military surplus gear available on the market for very reasonable prices.
I have no problem with what people charge, but I also feel no obligation to purchase a product from a company just because it is small, owned by a so called nice guy, and an American company.
This is business, not charity! You need to earn people's business by making a product that people want, and need, at a price they are willing to pay!
I would be more inclined to purchase gear from Malcolm and the Hidden Woodsman, if he could produce larger capacity, but lightweight packs that were more practical for going out on a multi day trip, where you needed to carry a 20 to 30 pound load.
