    Kind of ironic a bike accident was holding up much of that traffic...

    • @joemann7971
      @joemann7971 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would you even call that an accident? Looks like the bike just broke down on the side of the freeway. Highway patrol was just blocking the lane to prevent an accidentk, so, I guess it still counts.

      I feel like traffic on the bay bridge is held up almost daily by a motorcycle accident. Probably more like a few times a week but it's all too common.

      Yep it's the best thing about riding scooter/motorcycle. You don't have to wait in traffic like everyone else.

    • @GTAIVisbest
      @GTAIVisbest 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@H4I2I2EE Most states that have statutes criminalizing low-speed lane-sharing specifically name "motorcycles", and motorcycles only.
      In many states, low-CC mopeds are not registered as motorcycles and are subject to their own set of laws (usually, don't ride on bike paths, don't ride on the sidewalk, must have working lights, must have a plate).
      This means that low-CC mopeds/scooters default back to the state's "overtaking" law, which usually stipulates you can overtake traffic on the right if done safely in certain circumstances. In my state, for example, you can overtake on the right as long as it's done "safely" and there's enough room on the right for you to do so without going off the road.
      Practically, the fact that lane-filtering isn't illegal on scooters doesn't change the fact that enforcement is very low outside of some deep south states. In my state, you can probably lane-filter in front of police as long as you're doing it when traffic is stopped and you're going very slowly

    • @BayAreaMotorcycleCommuting
      @BayAreaMotorcycleCommuting  5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      L Ros The time savings are significant - a rough calculation is 1/2 to 1/3 the commute time of a car, depending on where you’re commuting from (in the past five years, I’ve saved roughly an entire month of my life by commuting on my motorcycle instead of BART or by car). Cost savings: $2.50 versus $6 per day at the bridge toll, which adds up, and parking depends on where you are in the city - I’ve found free motorcycle parking the past 5 years, but paid spots are sometimes less than $1/hour. Cars are slower and more expensive, but unquestionably safer and more comfortable during the cold and rainy season. You just have to weigh the trade-offs of your personal route, and find what works best for you. Don’t forget to factor in maintenance and gas mileage of your vehicle.
      Last thing I’ll say: psychologically, it’s a huge boost for me to start my day with a moto ride instead of crawling in traffic or getting packed like a sardine into a BART car. The freedom, the speed, and the independence put me in a great mood at the start of each day. Something to consider.

It is commonly heard when a vehicle sounding a siren (I drove Ambulances for 34 years) approaches, passes and recedes from an observer. In other words, the deep, throaty roar of loud pipes isn't really very deep or throaty until it has passed. Only an idiot would drive a DONARCYCLE between vehicles. I have attended to numerous DONARCYCLES collisions, anything from minor road rash to dead. I have often heard the vehicle driver say I didn't see him, I didn't hear him.

      I agree. It seems that, while apparently this lunacy is allowed in California, the motorcyclist still needs to understand that it is done at his/her own risk. It's just like making a right turn on red. It's legal but if you do it in front of someone and crash, it's YOUR fault. By the same token, it's legal for bikers to split lanes but if there is a crash, the bikers have no one to blame but themselves.
      Also, I don't see where the other vehicles should have any obligation whatsoever to make lane splitting easier. They are not obligated to remain in the exact middle of their lanes. And they are legally allowed to switch lanes when there are openings. Blasting between lanes at high speeds is simply inviting trouble when another vehicle chooses to change lanes at the same time a fast motorcycle decides to zoom into that opening at some insane speed. Who could say who is at fault - the motorcyclist or the driver of the other vehicle? But the biker would be just as dead.

  • @davidgrason161
    @davidgrason161 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I find it hard to believe that what you're doing in this video is what the California lawmakers had in mind when they made lane splitting legal. I'm glad this is still illegal in my state even though I had ridden motorcycles my entire life.
