SO glad I clicked. Moving to CBad this March 2024 and being an avid rider in Philadelphia, I need to know this as it is HIGHLY illegal and PennDOT unfortunately targets motorcyclist very harshly. I have been rear ended on the Schuylkill before and other motorist are awful at paying attention. With the Added humidity during the summer especially July/August, bikes are warm even before you start them up. Thank you for the explanation, Officer Pennings.

Here’s a legitimate rough answer: Many moons ago maybe in the 70’s or even 60’s California WAS a dream place. With its wide and winding roads, hills and scenery it was (and in this sense still is) a motorcycle paradise. Many places you could/can ride all year round. This brought us, the enthusiasts and rebels alike. Out of these factions the country’s strongest biker lobby was forged and a deal was struck. Out of reasoning that would greatly reduces stacked traffic situations motorcycles were allowed to split lanes, provided they started wearing helmets while riding. As a veteran migrant rider from the Midwest, let me say it’s was a no brainer win for us bikers. I’ve saved literally months of my time splitting lanes only to be required to wear a helmet that I’d wear anyway. It’s really necessary for comfortable high speed sport/touring riders or anyone without a huge shield, overwhelmingly most of us. 😎
Some of these comments, including the dorky news anchors missed his point. Notice how after all that, he was like, so it’s to make sure bikes don’t overheat..no lmao sure this can happen on old air cooled bikes. It’s mainly so we don’t get sandwiched between all these drivers on their phone. Yes some bikes split lanes at 100mph, no that’s not answer at all, but let’s not ignore the fact that like 8/10 drivers are on their phone. You don’t notice it that much until you ride. Every head buried in their laps. We’re on a 500lb plastic/metal bike, drivers are in a 4000lb tank essentially driving blind. Most drivers just have road rage issues that they are stuck in traffic. When you see a bike at a light m get sandwich by a distracted driver, you’ll understand the science behind it.
I drive a big rig. One day on I5 in the valley another truck was passing me. When he was about even with me a guy on a crotch rocket pulled that stunt between us. Must have been doing 90 mph. I couldn't believe it. Made my heart jump.
It's the out-of-state motorists who do not know that lane splitting is legal for motorcycles on highways and freeways in California that are the most dangerous and the biggest problem. They are the number one problem and cause of motorcycle crashes. A great deal of them Is the out-of-state motorists who intentionally try to run the motorcycle off the road during a motorcycle legally lane splitting on a highway or feeeway in California. The CHP have absolutely zero tolerance for this. The out-of-state driver is usually arrested for attempted vehicular homicide or receives a summons to court, depending on the circumstances.
How about a motorcycle lane to the far left, similar to HOV but for motorcycles only. Incentivize motorcycling by increasing safety. Lane splitting is dangerous!
i enjoy the heck out of lane splitting. I always make sure that i never speed more than traffic & give cagers a chance to see the bike. Most cars are courtesy enough to move over to give space, but there is always that one.

This lane being next to the carpool lane. Like i said, a truck merged and completely cut me off almost ending my life. Guess what, officer Crunk made it a point on thr crash report etc.,. To ignore my testimony and conclude that im the total cause of the wreck. To cyclist, dont not allow CHP TO CONCLUDE YOUR AT FAULT. IF AN ACCIDENT OCCURS, CALL AN ATTIRNAY IMMEDIATELY. @@icecold9511not all bikers split at insane speeds…yall really need to stop acting like all bikers do this. There's an idiot here in Redding that lane splits the left hand turning lane to turn left. Essentially turning left in front of another car. I personally don't lane split when I ride, makes me nervous. I just don't trust people, plus my bike is water cooled. :)
Not to mention, CA has the most common sense traffic laws and comparably, CA drivers are SO MUCH more respectful and considerate. At least they know how to use trun signals!!! Philly is the WORST city for petty motorists.
I’ve been driving in CA for 7 months now and have seen little to no turn signal usage. I’ve lived in 7 states and have driven through many more. CA drivers are the worst drivers in the entire country
Isn't there a speed limit to doing this? I see bikes all the time flying between cars with no care in the world at high speeds. I worry about I might lane change and not see the damn motorcycle flying between cars behind me doing 15 to 20 plus over the cars that are doing 55 mph. Many motorcyclists are good drivers, but there are also many that are complete Mavericks and think they can just fly by traffic that is moving at a good pace. Cops don't see to do anything about it. I see it all the time in Lake Tahoe where the speed is 45 and motorcycles are just flying in-between other motorists without a care in the world.
If anyone can explain this, I'd be grateful. Did the Cop really say it's ok because the bike may overheat? This is an incredible menace. I'm not going to feel sorry for any dumbass that does this, and runs into a car door, or gets pinched because of limited space. Your taking a vehicle with high liability and making it even more unsafe for everyone, and me? It's done just for sport. I have ridden for years and my key to safety is maintaining and controlling the area around me. This is lost with splitting. It appears to be an immature act to gain attention, much like those with a need to ride an unlawful load Harly, and despite the decibels and complaints still have this need for attention. It's not cool anymore, its weak and lame. Perter Fonda never needed to split lanes or ride load
“I have ridden for years”…ya okay 😂 if you don’t think older aircooled bikes don’t overheat in 105 degree heat, you haven’t been riding for that long lol. That’s not the primary reason to lane split though, if you have been riding for years, you should know this lmao
It is LEGAL to split lanes in a motorcycle in California. It's the law, cars must move for the motorcycle to pass. Motorcycles have the same right to go between lanes as cars do to go in their own lane. If you are a car driver and you don't like it, then ride a motorcycle. If you as a car driver cause a motorcycle to go down you can be sued for everything that you own even if you never touched him.
How ignorant are you 😂😂 drivers operating cars with their phone in their hand is also dangerous, just worry about focusing on the road, that bike splitting lanes (at safe speed) is doing 0 harm to you, you guys just get on your feels that you are stuck in traffic lol
This officer gets most right. But not all. To actually state that if there is an accident when a bike is lane splitting and it’s most likely the motorcyclists fault is total horseshit.

Better for the motorcyclist to get away from trucks as quickly as possible
That means the truck behind you was carrying his balls because balls that big cannot fit on a motorcycle.

also make sure to have a helmet camera, they can't deny fault with physical proof, or at least its harder for them too do so
Lane splitting isn’t endangering other people AT ALL. Let alone its not dangerous to the bikers either
Yes it is. Dangerous to both. Especially when they do it when traffic isn’t stop and go, and actually moving, bikes still think they can lane split
