Wonderful band - thanks for reacting to this - best version is live on Masters of Light. I saw the band with Alberto at Aylesbury and the legacy continues …

A gorgeous song by a gorgeous band!
    Well done
I love seeing your love at first 'sight' with such beautiful music!
I cry everyday for Longdons tragedy. RIP

Great review! Probably my favourite group at the moment. For your own enjoyment watch them pull this off live in another video. Others well worth listening to by BBT: Victorian Brickwork, The Underfall Yard, Judas Unrepentant, Ariel, Voyager and Atlantic Cable. Tragically, lead singer David Longdon passed away this year but new lead singer Alberto has picked up the mantle.

Big Big Train have many other great songs, long and short. East Coast Racer is a latter day Progressive masterpiece. Listening to their output over the last 12 or so years the comparison the Genesis falls away very quickly. Longdon, RIP, was blessed with an extraordinary voice and he will be missed, but he has left an impeccable legacy which I think, more and more people will come to explore with help of channels like yours, and word of mouth. Might I suggest The Underfall Yard (original version) as anothe long song reaction. Peace>

Big Big Train is a modern progressive band that hasn't lost sight of what's important..... melody , and telling a story. There's a lot of technical, complex music out there. That's utterly forgettable. No matter what genre , good music sticks with you. That is what separates Yes , Rush , Genesis, Pink Floyd etc from their clones. It's why Opeth Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree , Riverside , Marillion ,Big Big Train , The Pineapple Theif ,etc are successful when to many other modern progressive bands try to wow you with technical bombastic fluff.....
This song is a transcendent masterpiece.

Absolutely. A couple of excellent live videos capturing the classic (pre-pandemic) lineup in concert and live in studio..

@@apocketfulofheep I think this song is about the steam train the Mallard's speed record run of 126miles per hour which still stands for a steam train 🚂

East Coast Racer is always a favourite in the band's live shows. Tragically the vocalist, David Longdon died last year and I don't know if the new vocalist (Alberto Bravin) will be able to 'own' it like David did; I guess time will tell, but what I've heard of Alberto so far gives me confidence that he will grow into the band and those songs (of which East Coast Racer is but one of many) that seem so inextricably associated with David may yet get a new life. If you want to explore more of the band's music then I think you would probably enjoy their live performance of Victoian Brickwork from 2015 - I'll add a link in a reply to this post

I noted that you seemed utterly absorbed in the music; but the lyrics merit exploration too. The Big Big Train website is a mine of information and if says that East Coast Racer is about how:
75 years ago, on 3rd July 1938, a streamlined locomotive called Mallard set the world speed record for steam trains, travelling at 126mph on a straight, downhill stretch of the East Coast Mainline. Greg Spawton observes that “it wasn’t so much Mallard but the people who designed, made, fired and drove her that interested me. And it is their tale we tell over the 15 minutes or so of East Coast Racer. It is a story with a wonderful list of main characters; designer Sir Nigel Gresley, his assistant Oliver Bulleid, fireman Tommy Bray and driver Joe Duddington. Alongside those with starring roles was a community of engineers and railwaymen who all played a part in the making of a legend"
