    Amazing stuff! Every song is an epic in scope and proportion. Everyone talks about how sad it is that David passed away, and it is, but he didn't do this music by himself. He couldn't have done it without this group of extremely talented individuals playing the music he sang to. Let's give them the credit they deserve.

    Stunning piece of music. But also, what a crazy original idea to put to song the commemoration of an exciting but quite unusual moment in the history of industry, make the music suit the theme to a tee AND make it feel emotional and oh so so romantic! Thank you David; thank you Big Big Train!!

      ICR68 Uh no, that's not entirely true. David Longdon was considered as a replacement for Phil Collins when he left Genesis. Both he and Ray Wilson did many tryouts and eventually Ray Wilson was chosen by Genesis (i.e. Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and their manager Tony Smith) to provide the lead vocals on the "Calling All Stations" album (which turned out to be Genesis' swan song).
      Another intriguing part: Nick D'Virgilio laid down many of the drum parts for that album, replacing Phil Collins on drums. Nick and David never met during that entire process...
      It's all in this interview with David (found via Wikipedia): www.dusk.it/david_longdon_exclusive_interview.htm

    This song is an example of what sets them apart from their contemporaries. All moderns prog bands have superb musicians; that's one of the hallmarks of the genre. But it's another thing entirely to be superb composers, as well. It's the quality of the compositions that keeps you coming back for repeated listens.

      Like Earthshaker said, it's the story of Mallard. A steam engine built by the London Northeastern Railway that also has the distinction of being the world's fastest steam engine. The first verse is about Mallard being designed and built, the second about her getting fired up and moving for the world record attempt. I just purchased BBT's 2009 album after listening to Victorian Brickwork and I am sure to add more to my collection as everything I have listened to thus far from this band is indescribable and addicting. Shaped for speed
    strong on the wing
    the sketches and designs were made,
    frames were laid
    by hand-picked men.
    Working every hour they had
    to build the fire
    to make the engine;
    looking to the road ahead
    so she can fly.
    The road is clear
    and words remain unsaid.
    He walks the high wire
    with the engines and men
    of the line.
    He sees love,
    he sees hope,
    he sees everything that they are;
    the need to fly far.
    He sees love.
    Men as giants,
    hammers falling,
    the works’ own heartbeat.
    Furnace stacks with black smoke rising
    steals the clean air.
    (Hark. Here she comes...)
    Joe and Tommy on the plate
    their caps are worn in racing style,
    elbows jutting from the cab.
    Working every hour they had
    to build the fire
    to drive the engine;
    looking to the road ahead.
    There was a lonely voice
    and it spoke these words:
    “Run hard as you like
    for the engines and men
    of the line.”
    He sees love.
    He sees hope,
    he sees everything that they are;
    the need to fly far.
    He sees love.
    Men as giants
    feed the engine
    build the fire from cold.
    Coal and water
    fire and steam
    to drive the pistons home.
    He sees love.
    BRIDGE
    They ran south
    working up the bank
    past the upturned faces
    of the platelayers.
    She starts to take her wing,
    she jumps to it...like a living thing,
    made for speed and in full cry
    they gave her the road
    and she holds to the line.
    Church bells call a beat along the track
    she burns with the substance of the land.
    Racing through the circling lines
    a rocket in blue...at two miles a minute,
    embers stream along her sides;
    from this far away now,
    she flies with them
    into sky...
    Into history
    into legend
    she flies...

A difference in connecting through emotion verses connecting to one's soul.

      There's plenty of pop music that millions of people love. The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Prince, Taylor Swift... Of course, pop has many more casual listeners too, but I wouldn't say it has any less passionate fans than prog. I also have no idea what distinction you're making between emotions and the soul.

      It is complexity (lots of stuff playing at the same time and odd time signatures) that draws prog fans in since they can process it. Play a dream theater song with lots of time signatures to your friend and see what they think of it.

    This is the second time I have caught caught by this brilliant band - love the singer - cross between Peter Gabriel and Phil - the musicians are amazing - always love the violin - and yes Brass in prog works - brilliant music - going to listen to more - why doesnt Tony Banks work with these guys.

    Dagnabbit. I got chills and I wasn't even paying attention.
    Two keyboardists, one with the Korg SV1, the other with a Roland A-88 for the lower tier. A Novation and a Roland A-800 Pro on top? Nord Stage up front.

    Magnificent, joyful, triumphant, elegiac. A masterpiece as powerful, and as beautiful, as the Mallard herself.
