    I actually enjoyed Eric Saward's stories in Doctor Who. I also loved 'The Visitation' besides the mentioned ones, at least it's a memorable historical to me. Revelation actually starts as an interesting mystery too and there's some shift in tone between Peri and the Doctor which I think helped the story. Also, I should mention: Those covers look simple but very snazzy.

      @John Ross I know where you're coming from but I think production issues hindered much of that era too. I loved Earthshock. We'll say nothing of the 5 Doctors! I was hoping someone with some experience would help improve the latest version of the Doctor. I love Jodie but the writing has been poor.

      @@HOTD108_ Some serials do benefit from "tampering"; "Day of the Daleks" is much more watchable when the Daleks actually sound like Daleks and not someone's dad doing an imitation for their kid, and Adric's death in "Earthshock" is much more impactful when it's not rendered like an Atari 2600 game. Doctor Who always had a reputation for bad effects, but some are less tolerable than others (a sentiment that longtime fan Colin Baker agrees with).
      I'd only have an issue with the added effects if the original versions were removed from print entirely, but the people who produce these altered releases are wise enough to keep the original versions alongside the new ones. It helps for the sake of comparison, and can both let you appreciate what the production team could to within the budgets of their times and allow you to see effects that haven't aged as gracefully in a new light.
      For what it's worth, there are a number of serials that I do prefer unaltered, such as "Kinda" and "The Five Doctors".

      Not quite sure you can qualify Saward's comments here as genuine 'praise' for Colin: "Peter Davidson is a very good actor and it's a joy to hear him delivering lines I'd written, or certainly edited. And Colin Baker... a force of nature that's interesting, always interesting." A comparison that's damning for Colin in its faint praise.

    • @garygcrook
      @garygcrook 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Xtra Spice Mikey My stats are correct.
      Yes S11 did drop by 4 million viewers, before rising for the finale.
      This drop is characteristic of many series of Doctor Who especially New Who series.
      Plus a drop of 4 million isn't exceptional as both S1 and S5 dropped by over 4 million each.
      Also the worst rated show of S11, 'It Takes You Away', still did better than all but one of S10's episodes.
      And there are reports that S11 is the highest rated series since 'The Day Of The Doctor' special.
      Plus we do have to take into account that it was broadcast on a Sunday, which doesn't seem to do well for BBC1 as Strictly Come Dancing has 2 million more viewers for its Saturday show than it does for its results show on Sunday.
      Now as for online, I don't know where you've been getting this idea that the DW fans hate S11, as on Twitter and TH-cam the replies to the official DW feed and channel has been mainly positive.
      S11 may not have been the best series of Doctor Who, yet it was far from being the worst.
      So just get over it and accept it's going to be around for years to come.

      @@FreeTheDonbas Attack of the Cybermen is not Saward's best of course but it might be one of the most underrated stories in the show's history. It's a little convoluted but it has has great characters and dialogue in my view. It also sees the show, arguably for the first time since season 17 actually daring to play with humour and fun again, even while telling a serious story. It is the blood brother and semi-sequel to Resurrection (which other than the music and Terry Molloy making a good Davros is terrible on every level imaginable) but despite that particular story having all the perceived flaws of Attack (and then some), fans will call it a classic without hesitation.

      Revelation by far. It's a well written dark comedy. Resurrection is a bit of mess. Too much going on, too many characters and the actual plot gets lost. Whilst both stories might be grim, Resurrection crosses over into uncomfortable areas.

    • @ftumschk
      @ftumschk 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's tricky, as they're both excellent stories, and both are very well cast, acted and directed. I think that Revelation is a more interesting concept, however, and the writing is very skilful indeed, interweaving various subplots and managing to achieve a perfect balance between no less than _five_ double acts: Kara/Vogel, Orcini/Bostock, Natasha/Grigori, Takis/Lilt and of course the Doctor and Peri. We also have two memorable solo performances from Clive Swift as Jobel and Alexei Sayle as the DJ. There's a lot of delicious dark humour running through the story, too, which I love - even Davros gets some genuinely witty lines, and Terry Molloy is excellent as ever. With all these plus-points going for it, it's no wonder that I revisit Revelation the most often out of the two stories, but I enjoy them both.

      Resurrection is my fave of all time. It sets up so many intriguing characters and situations related to the Daleks and confronts the Doctor with such dark and powerful choices that I find it endlessly fascinating. The Daleks, his biggest headache, are literally on the verge of extinction... or resurrection... it's a situation where he can tilt it...all he has to do is become an executioner...as Tegan tells him... it's murder... and the way it plays out is brilliant, but so much is left unsaid in the end. You get to take it away with you and think about it. Love that.

      He famously said Baker was miscast in his Starburst interview in 1986. Over 20 years later (which meant he had plenty of time to think about it) he said pretty much the same thing in the documentary "Trials and Tribulations". So it might be a bit late for him to say different today and convince anybody.

      Personally, I didn't like Colin Baker as the Doctor. But then I didn't like Eric Saward much as a script editor, or John Nathan-Turner as a producer. I think they all played their part in the decline of the show. I agree with what the likes of Terrance Dicks, Philip Hinchcliffe and Mark Gatiss said about what happened to the show in its later years.

      @@sadako24 sadako has got it about right. Neither JNT nor Saward were good on the show in my view. JNT was not a fan of science fiction (Cartmel mentions that on the DVD commentary for Greatest Show in the Galaxy) and, according to both Bidmead and Saward in interviews, JNT had no particular interest in scripts. Davison has said pretty much the same thing. Janet Fielding said variety entertainment was JNT's great love. Saward, meanwhile, had never written a script for television before The Visitation, and on the basis of that story alone was - incredibly - made script editor of the show. The pairing of JNT and Saward was a recipe for disaster. They were never really on the same page and neither were good enough.

      Knight Chime I love Colin Baker as a actor. And as much debate the Extreme Whovian love SLAGGING JNT casting a “big name actor” for the 6th Doctor.
      JNT for once did something ingenious in casting Colin Baker as the 6th Doctor!!!!
      I love his patchwork outfit as it is unique and his smooth sounding voice and his blond curls.
      As much “Slagging” I am doing. I though Time Lash, which is the most unpopular episode is the 6th Doctor at his finest.
      The First is the one that started it all and he is the original so no one in their Right Mind will Slag the First.
      The one we and every one should Slag is a bloke named Eric Saward!!!!

      @@FreeTheDonbas He's likely referring to casting a woman as the Doctor, which some people think was done just to be PC. But as the for "DW has always been 'woke'", I'm not sure I really agree with that. The portrayal of female companions in the original show is usually considered pretty sexist, Talons of Weng-Chiang (one of the most popular stories) was about as un-PC as it gets, Terrance Dicks has never struck me as "woke" with his comments on women being "strapped to the circular saw" and on the British Empire. There was also a chronic lack of representation of "people of colour" in the show until Cartmel made a point of introducing more of them at the very end of the run. And don't forget that Dr Judson in Curse of Fenric was intended by the writer to be gay but this was vetoed by JNT (himself gay) because he thought it inappropriate. So I'd say compared to New Who, the old show was not woke at all and they've made a particularly a big effort to fix that with the 21st century series.

    Why does no one ever question the Tardis itself? In almost every "redecoration" of the Tardis it has some sort of either bumps or lights dotting the walls. It almost always looks like you are standing inside a Dalek looking at the outer shell????
