    Good info. Suggestions for future "how-to videos: 1) Wear a light solid colored shirt for background. The dark modelled shirts hides the items... hook, bait, etc., that you are trying to show; 2) Keep a manila folder or a 4x5 card of the same color as a folder handy to use as a focus background rather than your hand; 3) limit the exceptions in the techniques you are describing. Keep to the main topic.

      I know Jacob's dad really well. I met Jacob when he was a teen. Jacob was focused at a young age on becoming a pro. He would enter every tournament that he could and fish like every single day. I would say, and I am sure Jacob would agree , that if this is what you want to do, you have to commit fully to it and devote everything to your goal. You better have some good financial backing to get that deep into it though. Travel, tackle, entry fees, boat upkeep and a ton of other miscellaneous financial expense things will definitely come into play.

      I remember being told that Jacob would ride his bike to the boat ramp on the white river when he was a kid. Just hoping someone’s partner didn’t show up for a tournament. And one day he got his chance as a guy needed a partner. And the rest is history

      There is a video series called The Weight that features JW and DC. It goes into great detail about how they both got started and follows them all the way to the MLF series. One of the best video series you’ll ever watch. Here’s the link to the first video.

      It's pretty well documented in any fishing magazine going back to his open days.. you can get on a lot of fishing forums and read anything and everything about his come up and it's pretty phenomenal. Dude is a beast with a fishing rod in his hand! And the way his brain breaks down a lake is absolutely not normal! And I mean that in all of the right ways..

    I think that I have used or experimented with at least every brand of hook out there over the last 5 to 10 years.. and I'm not just saying this because you are a vmc guy, but I would say for the last 5 years or so I've been using vmc hooks exclusively! I mean they literally have a hook for every application, if I'm not mistaken they were the first brand that came out with a Tokyo rig, hooks with swivels, treble hooks with blades, feathered treble hooks, you name it they've got it! I really love their neko rig hooks n their drop shot hooks! But not too long ago as in a few months ago I was fishing with a buddy of mine at Guntersville and he fishes the Toyota series and sometimes he gets his hands on things that are not hanging on the shelves just yet before the average Joe like myself can buy it.. and I remember I brought a small terminal box with me that day and I literally broke off on a doggone biggin and did not have any more ewg style hooks, and he said hey man look in my box grab that pack of owner hooks and try those out, and they were the new haymaker from owner! Not know anymore but then absolutely new, a lot of people still don't know about them but I'm pretty positive and would be willing to bet that you know about them, I don't know if you've used them enough to really see the difference in the way they made that hook and where the hook point is to the line tie.. but literally every single fish that you catch on that hook they've got it deeper in their mouth and they cannot shake it! I cannot emphasize that enough about how they cannot shake that hook, granted we all know that it's harder for a fish to shake a single hook versus a treble hook.. but still they manage to from time to time.. but I have switched over to using owner for my EWG style hooks and using the haymaker exclusively just when I'm using the ewg.. if you have not used them, or if you have but you really haven't put one through its paces and paid a lot of attention to how it's designed and how good it gets them and where in their mouth it gets them I would highly suggest that! Now I know there's nothing that a guy like me from nowhere Alabama is going to be able to tell you of all people anything that will make a difference in your day to day routines.. but there is something about that hook, they did a really good job with it, and I was highly impressed! Don't fish professionally pretty much the financial part is a huge stretch for me, I have fished a bunch of opens and that was as much as I could afford! And I still do it even though if I did qualify for the elites.. I couldn't afford to fish it. I just do it for the competition and the love of the sport and fishing different water as much as possible and measuring myself up against the country's best! But getting way way off subject and leaving way too big of a comment for such a simple thing .. long comment short, if you haven't used the newer owner hooks haymaker ewg it's really worth trying!! ✌️🕺😎

    No doubt a good general overview, Jacob. And your video gets people thinking intelligently before selecting a particular type of hook for a particular fishing application.
    Yet on the average, if I am worm fishing, or when I can still use them, I go with different sized sproat hooks, when I'm not put in a corner needing to use an EWG or Flipping hook. And I also try to use the lightest gauge wire I can, for the application I am fishing.
    A good sproat hook as designed, and especially in a lighter gauge, drives truer and straighter into a bass's mouth, on the average. Wide gap hooks of whatever sort allow for a larger margin of error and are usually heavier gauge to boot, making them harder to set, especially at farther distances, as you have touched upon.
    Watch your hookup percentage increase using lighter sproat style hooks of the correct size for the bait. Or when having to use wider hooks, tend toward using braid with short casts and more forceful hooksets, and maybe using a bit stouter rod for that application, as well.

    I like to see a video of ur favorite baits that are discontinued that u still use and ones that u still use that might be hard to get ur hands on. Or just a video of older baits that everyone says aren’t the same anymore since new molds came out. Something like that. Baits that u can get anymore but maybe a bait that’s close to it that someone else might make these days that could fill that spot

    I mainly use wide gap hooks on all my worms or ewg & medium size soft plastics, one hook that I discovered that has worked great Gamakatsu skip gap 3/0, never lost a fish the last trip, & I use owner hooks, was wanting to try the haymaker but it's always sold out, VMC makes some good hooks as well, I don't always buy named brand tackle, I mainly buy store brands like h20 or eagle claw! Thanks for the great tips👍

    I throw almost exclusively Trokar hooks. I've lost one large bass due to minimal hook penetration and I haven't lost a monster since I switched. I may not catch the numbers because of it but I certainly get the big ones to the boat/shore.

  • @Surfer-727
    @Surfer-727 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Double thanks Jake ! 🍰🍰 I use Owner Sniper Finesse cause they have offset points, I believe the offset point catches about 25% more bass. I use the 5" Maxscent General with them. In the rocks I am not sure if the weedless version helps much though they seem to help in the brush ? I bend the wire guards down just above the point, why the factory does not do this beyond me and why do some people trim them ?

    Good content, Jacob! But I have one suggestion. When doing something like your Texas rig hooks, have more contrast in your background, like your shirt. You can hardly see the darker colored hooks with your dark shirt in the background. It doesn’t matter how much light you have if everything is the same color or contrast.

    Hey Jacob: I wonder if you have a preferred keeper style on your EWG hooks. (Me, I like the Z-lock bend on the VMC 7311 hooks or the added material on the Mustad grip-pin hooks, rather than the conventional keeper bend angles.)

    Next show put on a light colored shirt. That dark bait against the dark shirt made hooks bait and rigging hard to see. A background in fly tying will help a whole lot with using the right size hook with the size of the bait. And never think a small hook cannot catch a large fish. During a Trico hatch a size 28 hook caught a 30 inch brown trout in a fast moving river. The leader as mono sewing thread at the tippet which tested out at about a pound and a half.
