5 Tips to Catch More Bass Using Texas-Rigged Worms

  • Jacob Wheeler (wired2.fish/WheelerFishingYou...) is a compulsive experimenter when it comes to tackle and techniques, so you notice when he bypasses 16 other rods to grab a Texas-rigged worm. As he states, "there are baits that are trends and those that stand the test of time." A Texas-rigged worm might be the best example of the latter. Wheeler talks about the importance of hook and weight selection and his top 2 retrieval methods when fishing ribbontail worms offshore.
    TACKLE USED:
    • VMC Ike Approved Wide Gap Hook, 5/0: wired2.fish/VMCWideGap
    • VMC Tungsten Flippin Weight, 3/8oz: wired2.fish/VMCFlippingWeight
    • VMC Sinker Stop: wired2.fish/VMC-SinkerStop
    • Sufix Advance Fluorocarbon, 17lb: wired2.fish/AdvanceFluorocarbon
    • Googan Baits Mondo Worm 10" Plum: wired2.fish/MondoWorm
    • Duckett Jacob Wheeler Series Casting Rod, 7'6" Heavy: wired2.fish/DucketWheelerCast...
    • Duckett Paradgim Casting Reel: wired2.fish/Paradigm

    WHEELER'S WORM FISHING TIPS:
    1. Choose light-wire worm hooks over heavy-duty hooks when casting to bass. Driving hooks home at a distance and depth is a lot easier with light-wire hooks. Wheeler advocates the same when Carolina rigging.
    2. Use 8- to 10-inch worms. Giant worms reduce hooking percentages and don't generate bigger bites than midsized mouthfuls.
    3. Experiment with lift and fall (stroking) retrieves and slow drags across the bottom. Individual bass will often have a preference for one over the other.
    4. Increase the fall rate to trigger reaction strikes. A fast drop speed is an overlooked trigger when stroking a worm off of the bottom. Experiment with 1/2- to 3/4-ounce tungsten weights fire up the school.
    5. Let bass eat the bait. Bass need a little top to engulf a long worm into their mouth. Give the fish a 2- to 3-second count before setting the hook. Doing so helps to ensure the bait is full in their mouth, which significantly improves hookups.

    Great tip on waiting to set the hook. You mentioned "Follow through on the set". I'd like to hear more about what that follow thorough means to you. Don't know I am thinking it through that far. Great video. Thanks

      He means once you make that jerk to set the hook, keep that rod back with the tension tight, and reel to ensure that the hook pierces the fish and is set.

    you have a video for texas rig worm from bank in heavily weeded water? lake near where i live doesn’t allow boats unless you rent and the bottom has heavy vegetation. is there a different method for texas rig for me to use or would i better off with a different setup altogether?
    (new to fishing. caught three bass so far in a two month period but definitely having struggles with the terrain under the water)

    So I was just watching fishing vids from my xbox. And wasn't listening that close because wife just tested positive for virus and it's crazy around the house. I was just about to change vids and I said hey. That sounds like J Wheels. Your my second favorite fishermen out there on the tour. Good luck brother. Peace.

    your light wire preference for improved hooksets at the end of a long cast , when using FC or mono makes sense, but I am confused on one point. Somewhere along the line I read something that made it seem that when a hook ends out (with often lost fish) it does so most commonly at the harder hookset point, and not so much afterwards. If that is true than wouldn't that light wire hook become as risky as not getting a solid hookset with a heavier gauge hook? In Ct I'm not often tangling with bass over 6 lbs. and to be honest I've never ever bent a hook out. So I'll take your theory as good advise and will determine whether the hookset will cause it to bend out enough to lose fish. Cause while fishing FC on my baitcaster, if I get bit at the long-range end of a cast I'm not going to hold back on that hookset!

    What power and action rod would you recommend for worm fishing? I fish mostly okeechobee and surrounding lakes so I’m fishing around grass and vegetation mostly.

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Garrett, a standard 7- to 7'6'' medium-heavy power rod with Fast to Extra Fast Action will always get the job done.

    • @Chewinfat
      @Chewinfat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wired2Fish thank you, been using a medium action rod and seem to not get a good hook set some of the time especially on large fish. I’ll be switching to a MH now.

    How do you all match your hooks to your soft plastics? Is there a standard size? Mainly casting from shore. Thanks in advance 👍🇦🇺✝🎣🛥

      Just eyeball it, so the hook takes up about 1/3 of the plastic

      I’m late to this party, but with most average size plastics, you’re usually good to use 3/O, 4/0, to 5/O. That size has worked for me over 55 yrs. Then you need to choose between straight shank, offset, EWG. That’s personal preference thru experimentation. Good rule of thumb is EWG for thicker bigger creature baits and regular gap for smaller or thinner baits like worms. I prefer an offset worm hook. Many prefer the EWG.
