Moto Guzzi Griso 8V SE: Naked sportsbike royalty or just a bad tempered Latin? | Snag | INFO MOTO

  • The Moto Guzzi Griso 8V SE was unashamedly making the most of the brand’s heritage, and, in particular, the 2002 Moto Guzzi LeMans Tenni sportsbike.
    It sported green and brown bodywork (just like the old dustbin-faired V8 and 350 racers) and was a tribute to Omobono Tenni, who raced to 47 victories for Moto Guzzi.
    He also boasted the accolade of being the first non-British rider to win the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy race.
    So. That’s the bloke. Now the bike - the 8V SE. Moto Guzzi gave the bike a tough and masculine visage from the outset, blacking out the spoked wheel rims, frame, engine, fork and handlebars.
    In addition, the pastel green and tan paint and red badging deliver it an exclusive feel and high-end persona.
    This one could only be Italian; in that, it’s not perfect, petulantly demanding you earn your relationship. It grumpily thuds, shakes and twists on the gas, sending all sorts of signals back through the bars. It’s an all-sensory experience.
    The 1151cc transverse V-Twin, good for 80kW at 7500rpm, pulls strongly off the bottom of the revrange, making 90 per cent of its peak torque (108Nm at 6400rpm) from 3000rpm to 7000rpm and growling out at the 8500-rpm redline, all the time announcing its loud, booming presence.
    This one has a Zard exhaust fitted and I loved scaring dogs and elderly people on my test ride. Yes, I’m going to hell…
    Gearing is tall, making the bike pleasingly long-legged for touring. Seat comfort is pretty good, with a 400km day not sending me squealing to the chiropractor.
    Suspension componentry and dynamics are a highlight with that fully adjustable, 43mm inverted fork and monoshock provide precise fine-tuning and adjustment.
    So, the Griso has its pecadillos, but for mine they add up to style, class and personality. The love affair starts as soon as you discover the angry 90-degree V-Twin exhaust note.

    I had one of these (Griso 8v se Tenni), loved it to bits. After riding it for 3 years (2010-13) and putting about 40k km on it I sold it because someone gave me a very good price on it (1.5K€ off new price)... always regretted selling it (after). Didn't ride for a while but now living in the mountains looking again at bikes...mmm maybe a v100 mandello in the same tenni green will do the trick ;-)
    Love the montage.

    I have the Breva 1100, the more mild mannered (just barely) sister to the Griso, and it's a blast to ride. A bike that begs to be ridden every day, it's pure magic on wheels.

    Thanks for the content. I bought a new 2017 Black Devil three seasons ago, what a bike! The dealer wouldn't budge on the price, worth every dollar. The GRiSO is a joy to ride.

    I got one of these. The 1200 SE version. Tenni color is nice. I love the original sound from the big muffler. I will keep my muffler original. However, it's Le Mans in my garage is a little..

    Hello from across the ditch. I own a Griso and absolutely love riding it, even with the harsh suspension, sore arse and back, lousy tank capacity. I imagine it would be like being married to a stormy red headed woman. Annoying at times, but when its good, its sooooo good :)
    Moto Guzzi, for those who don't care how its done in japan....

    Grouse! Now that's a term I haven't heard for a long time, but describes the bike well. You don't fall in love with hp/ torque alone, you fall in love with overall character.

    I returned to biking last year and after much deliberation bought a BMWR1250R and it is a great bike, easy to ride, and very powerful with a lot of low down grunt. Being a personal thing, I don't like fairings, as they take the 'bikiness; feel away, having ridden Triumphs and naked Hondas in the past. I seriously considered a Moto Guzzi (my sort of bike), but there are so few dealerships in Norfolk. However it has to be said the Griso is a gorgeous looking motorbike, a true bike, and I am sure it would not only be reliable, but easy to ride, and give much pleasure. Thank you for this review.

      Mine was pretty reliable but they absolutely need top notch batteries and a starter relay bypass system fitted to achieve it. Gorgeous looking bike though, with rock solid, slightly heavy handling

    I agree with you wholeheartedly! That's why I bought one at the start of April. A low mileage absolute minter. I'm done with UJMs & want style, reasonable performance & exclusivity. Not my first Guzzi either, so I expect to enjoy the Italian bike ownership experience too. 😉

  • @Deetroiter

    That Griso sounds bad to the bone! I have a V7 Classic and V7iii Milano. The thing I’ve noticed with Guzzis is they most all have a casual, fun feeling riding experience to them…but once you twist the throttle, you can fully feel the racing heritage that Moto Guzzi has. I’ve felt it in every Guzzi I’ve ever ridden. Not the fastest, not the most technological, etc…but it’s absolutely up there with the most engaging with the senses. There is just something about the bikes that are difficult to put into words. The sound, the feel, etc are truly one of a kind. Stylish, sexy, and runs on premium grade masculinity. Italian to its core. There’s things that Italians are willing to compromise, but the sound, style, and riding experience are a few things the Italians will never compromise on. 👍

    I like Aussie reviews, they seem to ramble on less than Brits (and I am a Brit!) This makes me miss my 1100 Griso, if not the riding position. I found it hurt my thighs / lower back after long runs but then I’m quite tall, not a 5’ 6” Italian jockey

    hi, I have had my Griso for 4 years... beautiful bike, superb engine, really well made and finished.. however.. no abs.. and and slow speed handling on twisty roads (alpine passes etc) hopeless.. the combination of a long wheelbase, acute steering and the heavy engine partially outside the center of balance (and high up) is something that takes time to get used too.. I love this bike, but its definitely flawed.. cheers

    This is one of the few bikes that ISN'T transverse.

    • @chriswilson5111
      @chriswilson5111 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The vee angle transverses or crosses the bikes centre line whereas the crank runs along it or is longitudinal.

    • @hlaw2830
      @hlaw2830 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chriswilson5111 And it's the crank which matters. A V8 Mustang and a I6 BMW M3 are both inline. A V6 Alfa 147 and an I4 Civic are both transverse.

    • @chriswilson5111
      @chriswilson5111 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And yet without exception, every single description has shown what matters most with an exposed Vee engine is the included angle and its orientation.
      The factory, every journalist and owner will immediately refer to what is most prominent not what is most hidden.
      Strange world, isn't it?

    • @hlaw2830
      @hlaw2830 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chriswilson5111 Quite a few people seem to make that argument about Moto Guzzi, but no one makes it about BMW, because everyone knows that engine is longitudinal, so... this might just be a product of reading Wikipedia instead of turning a wrench, lol.

    • @chriswilson5111
      @chriswilson5111 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hlaw2830 So, what happens if you consider a flat twin with a vertical crank such as in old lawn mowers?
