Question, hoping you can help me brainstorm a solution. I'd like to use my iPhone 16 as a camera for a video podcast etc. To do that, I need to be able to use my iPhone 16 and the BlackMagic Camera App as a webcam in order to record video directly on the Mac or through Riverside app/web client etc. If I plug usb-c to usb-c it only works for the regular video app and not BM. I am also using a usb-c audio interface to record audio. Any help/suggestions/brainstorms is GREATLY appreciated!
I signed up for the 14 day course and I love it so far. Would like to see a bit more on the hohom m6 gimbal and a section on growing on TikTok as I’m interested in growing dog gear and training channel
SO I'm curious about the Moment App's LOG feature - is it truly LOG vs Apple LOG or a pseudo log file format? Does it shoot 10bit 422? 420? That's a big question I can't seem to get answered. I shoot an iPhone 14 and having Moment's LOG without having to go to an iPhone 15 Pro would really be nice otherwise it's another expense I really don't want to have to make. I prefer the Blackmagic app but I'm constrained to shooting ProRes 422LT to an external SSD in Rec2020 color space to try and squeeze as much dynamic range as I can at the present time.
Pearla will have video support in January 2025. It will have Log support on all iPhones with real time color space matching to Sony S-Log3 and Nikon N-Log. You can already do still photography in S-Log3 and it matches perfectly with Sony a7siii.
Any of these lets you tinker with saturation, contrast, shadows etc? i cant find videos about it, as someone who comes from samsung, im use to those functions!
I take videos casually and wanted just a bit more modularity than iPhone proprietary Cinematic mode, should I use Final Cut, can’t I just change the depth of field for a “cinematic mode”
Great video. Would have liked to see discussion around gymbals like the DJI OM-5 and DJ OM-6 though as these try and force you down the DJI MImo app path, which you haven't covered. I've been using Filmic Pro Legacy (refuesd to pay for the switch to the monthly subscription model) and it supports the OM-5 although it took them a year to cover it and it looked like the OM-6 was going to take even longer. I like the look of BlackMagic but I have an iPhone Pro 13 not the 15 and I'm guessing it won't support th OM-5 gymbal either so guess I just have to stick with the older apps I have?
Cool, thanks for this! What if one wants to adjust the input volume? I may be buying some (inexpensive) wireless lav mics. But if the talent is yelling, for instance, the audio would distort.
I'm using a Shure usb mic that has it's own level settings (app) and has proven to be exceptional at handling loud bursts of sound and being sensitive at getting the "pin drop" details. That is app where I get the manual controls. I would expect other brands of mics will also offer the separate / manual level controls. The only issue is that I set up to record at 24/48kHz audio (in Shure app) and my iPhone (in native camera operation) down samples that to 16/44.1kHz in the final output video file. I needed to use FilmicPro app I have in order to retain the 24/48khz bit depth/rate. Perhaps newer iPhones will record audio at 24/48Khz natively? I'm still with iPhone 12Pro Max. For users with newer phones(?), or/and of course Blackmagic or Final Cut Camera I'd expect there is 24/48Khz audio recording no problem, and some manual audio controls. Manual audio levels is where things become much more professional imo, along with ProRes and Log, and the faster file output with USB-3. I need to make the jump to an iPhone 15 now that the 16 is rolling out. I'm always (for better or worse) staying behind the latest thing, and it has worked out ok for me.
Hi, anyone has any clue on how to resolve this issue: recording video in different formats in blackmagic app on my iphone 15 pro max, during recording timeline is running and all, but when checking the video in media or importing it on computer, it cannot play, it's on 00:00, as a still image?
Can you record with your phone turned upside down while using Blackmagic? Does it automatically puts the shot in normal vertical position? Cause I’ve tried it once and it didn’t work. My video was upside down.
Thank you for this updated video, Anthony. I think I'd like to try the BlackMagic app, but I admit it looks a bit intimidating. Then again, so did DaVinci Resolve until I tried it out. :)
Great overview of the camera apps with details about their differences. It's been difficult to distill with a comparison like this. I'd love to know a bit more about the photo features of the Moment app. For example, does it allow bracketing that people might use when doing Real Estate photos? Regarding Final Cut Camera is there any app on the iPad Pro that will allow you to just use it as a camera monitor? I don't want to subscribe to FCP iPad just for that as I don't anticipate the need for Multicam and don't edit on my iPad (circa 2018 no less so FCP isn't viable)?
Great questions! I will definitely look more into the photo modes. You should be able to screencast the iphone screen to an ipad without needing an app if all you want to do is monitor the screen
You may not have tried the Iphone 16 pro max yet as I know it is not officially released, but I was wondering what your thoughts are on a Gimbal for it. I have heard you say that filming in the middle of the day is terrible light and most of my projects take place outside, or in my workshop which is at least undercover, but outside …so I may be committing a TH-cam crime (us Australians like sunset and sundown…similar to the kangaroos you can accidentally hit on country roads at those exact times of day). So I won’t be having a studio, except for sometimes feeling in my converted garage out the back. I am a complete novice and did get the DJI Osmo Mobile 6, but it really does not love my Iphone 15 Pro Max and it took about 45 minutes to seat the Magnetic Mobile Phone Clamp on first try, with and without the cover. Admittedly, I had never even owned a selfie stick before and only learnt what a GImbal was, but I'm really good with tools, putting things together (yes, even Ikea furniture) so it was really annoying. Would love your thoughts. Not sure if you might cover it in your course. I'm yet to start!!! regards Victoria
For me the big advantage of Final Cut Camera is the ability to use an iPad as a monitor and control the camera. Does Blackmagic Camera have anything similar?
Apple native camera, Blackmagic, and Final Cut Camera lack the icon for users to turn on the flashlight of iPhone for recording in the dark. The REC app has this feature for users turning on the flashlight of iPhone for recording videos in the dark.

@@MrPaulXavier Yes true everyone hated that.
