Back in high school, I used to stay up late at night, get stoned, throw on some music like this and lose myself in the winamp visualizations. Good times.
As a young boy the music alone was enough to scare me so much I couldn’t go to bed . As a man approaching sixty i listen to this and still feel the fear but it’s overtaken by a wild desire to face it .
@@TheFlyingSailorYT Oh, dang! I'd been introduced to Doctor Who back in HS, and Jon Pertwee was the first Doctor I'd watched, when I didn't have homework or wasn't too tired to stay up late. Didn't remember that he'd said this. But I will have to remember it from this point on. 😁
Delia Derbyshire was a genius. I often wonder whether The Beatles, and others, would've achieved their studio greatness if it weren't for her (and admittedly, other's) work at the BBC. The history of the recording of the original theme is incredible merely by itself. People forget it was pre-Sgt Peppers and there was no multitrack.
There wasn’t even a playable synth, just an oscillator you could tune and then record a note. If you record enough of the required oscillator pitches to tape then you can begin to assemble tiny chopped up pieces of tape into the correct order and duration to make a sequence. That sequence could then be turned into a tape loop and so on.....
Interesting you should mention the Beatles, as George Martin, their most prolific producer, had previously been at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, where Delia Derbyshire' created the original theme.
I remember hearing this when I was in my senior year of high school (‘05-‘06), and I loved it, although I had never watched Doctor Who. And then in 2013, my then boyfriend at the time introduced me to Doctor Who, to which I fell in love. And hearing the theme song the first time, I realized I had heard it years before. It was just funny to me how it had come full circle. A beautiful coincidence. Although I’m sure the real Doctor would dismiss it as coincidence.

Absolutely epic... A really great remix of a really great, groundbreaking track. The original is just legendary, and this remix is a masterpiece as well... And I like the video that was made for the DVD, it flows pretty well with the song. It's a nice complement to the (of course far richer) texture and especially dynamics of the song itself, and it's pretty cool how it opens up and closes with the Orbital circle logo :)

Heard The BBC Radiophonic Orchestra (credit to Delia Derbyshire for her realisation of it originally, of course!) play this live at the National Concert Hall, Dublin, and It Blew My Mind. And then Orbital live too, with this! Unreal xx
Absolutely brilliant, and far closer thematically to the original vision of Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire than the sped-up, overloud, bombastic orchestral version we were fobbed off with. Why they didn't use this version is beyond me...
Because a new version for each series means you don't have to pay royalties and the BBC doesn't want to pay any money to Orbital because they are cheap.
This is so much better than the mix the series is using now. This is mysterious, dark and exciting, like the original theme! Not like Gold's current mix
Such an iconic tune. Delia Derbyshire created one of my very favourite tracks ever. We walked up and he was snorting coke of his centre console. This tune definitely left an impression!
This captures the spirit of the original very well, but i think Delia's interpretation of Ron's composition is still the best. They use this version on the classic DVD's of the show when showing the history of the Doctor...
