  • Brandy Kumquats are extremely delicious and a wonderful use of an abundant harvest of Kumquats, from your tree. They make a great gift for those of suitable age, especially when covered in dark chocolate, which I show you in part 2
    PART 2 OF THIS VIDEO
    • Brandy Kumquats Part 2
    Brandy Kumquats
    Clean pint jars
    Kumquats or Cumquats (depending how you spell it where you live)
    Brandy
    1/2 cup cane sugar per pint jar
    Add all ingredients into jar,
    ensuring kumquats are covered by liquid
    Remove air bubbles
    And secure lid.
    Mix or shake (if your jar doesn’t leak) daily for 2 weeks
    I find initially I mix and once the brandy becomes more syrupy I can shake and it doesn’t leak.
    Strain liquid and store in dark jars for further 6 months to become a delicious liquor.
    Kumquats can be dipped in chocolate and enjoyed - this will be a future video.

    Welcome to Moat Cottage Homesteading,
    I'm Elissa and on this channel you will see my homesteading life.
    I show you how to be more self sustainable & homestead in a small space.
    You'll see how to grow organic food, use and preserve the harvest, raise backyard poultry, both Muscovy ducks and Chickens as well as breeding Mealworms and Crickets.
    You will learn how to make natural remedies, get more prepared for emergency situations, how to organise the homestead, money saving ideas and how to live with less waste.
    Here at Moat Cottage, we raise and grow and process some of our own free range meat, organic vegetables and fruit.
    We grow all of our herbs for both eating and medicinal purposes as well as hunt, fish and forage.
    We preserve our produce for the year ahead by canning, dehydrating and freezing and we work on being prepared for emergency situations.
    We live using less waste, we recycle and upcycle and love finding what is needed for a project at the scrap yard, op shop or a garage sale, but only buy what is really needed.
    We don't like plastic, chemicals and artificial fragrances and are trying to live an older style life balanced with this modern world lifestyle.
    Good health and natural living has always been a high priority for our family and despite this two family members are living with auto immune diseases, myself included.
    We focus on what we can do, when we can do it, stay positive and so I make these videos for you on my best days.
    Much Love

    Hi Guys,
    December has been a real challenge for me health wise and so instead of preparing wonderful gifts and Christmas treats for you to see, I’ve mostly been out of action in bed.
    Thankfully I am well prepared to be out of action for long periods of time, with no notice and so life continues to run smoothly here, even with power outages from storms and no water from a burst water pipe down the road. It was interesting to hear of some people not coping with the inconvenience of no power and I look forward to talking to you about this when I’m able.
    I apologise for my delayed responses in the past month and I still have some lovely comments I still need to give attention to, I’m a week behind and I am sorry I’m not up to it just yet but I promise I will catch up as soon as I can.
    Thank you so much for your ongoing support and friendship, I value and appreciate you all.
    Much love
    Elissa

    Elissa, if you use canning lids and rings instead of the white caps, they seal well enough for you to gently turn and shake the jars. They won't completely seal unless you process them in a canner. Ball also makes "pickling weights" - small glass pieces that will fit in the top of the jars to weigh down fruits and veggies. I usually get these supplies from www.fillmorecontainer.com or Amazon. They will make life much easier!

    • @MoatCottage
      @MoatCottage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Carol Avant, yes you are so right, I should use the lids and rings, I find that after a few days once it’s more syrupy, I can easily shake with no leakage but next time I will make it easy right from the start.
      I love the weights and use them for fermenting all the time but due to all the mixing/shaking for this recipe I haven’t tried using them here. I’m sure they would be good though. You always have such great knowledge and ideas and I really appreciate you sharing, thanks 🙏😊

      @@MoatCottage LOL, I'm old, honey! I grew up financially challenged - We had to preserve and stretch everything. Glad I had the opportunity to learn these things, and even happier to be able to share them with you "young'uns"!

    • @MoatCottage
      @MoatCottage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carol it’s amazing what one can stretch, forage or simply make do or go without, when there are no other options.
      There is so much wasted these days and people continue to spend well above their means, certainly a fragile way of life in the long term.
      Having the skills to survive when times are tough are most important in my opinion and I am thrilled that you regularly contribute. 😊

      I am still needing to rest a bit but am able to talk long enough to make a small video as well as read and respond to comments so overall I am doing great.
      Christmas was special because my parents drove down from far north Qld, despite the cyclone they had the day before they left.

    Elissa, Sorry to hear you have not been the best. I love cumquat jam so am thinking if I can get my hands on some at a good price, I will do this. Before kids I made my own liquour chocolates by doing similar things with fruit and alcohol. Only threw the plastic molds away recently as they were too old.

      Kumquat jam is one of my favourites and your liquors sound absolutely delicious. I’m liking the silicon moulds for my projects these days, I find them very good and reasonably priced, although I still have a couple of plastic ones holding up.

    I have never eaten a kumquat and I don't believe I've ever seen them at the store. But this recipe really interests me so I'll go to an International Market to see if they sell them.
    I believe the world would crash if we were without electricity for any length of time. I wouldn't mind it because I love to read and this would give me an excuse but my son and Hubby that are always on their phones would be in for a shock.
    I want to homestead. I'm hoping to sell our condo in May and then hitting the road to find the right piece of land. I want to grow beans and tomatoes, cucumbers and squash. And I want chicks and fresh eggs. I realize this will be a harder lifestyle than I am use to at the moment but I want to learn. I want to be self reliant.
    Take care. I just had surgery on Tuesday removing a bone from my left thumb (awww aging strikes). But this year has been a challenge as I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Lupus and antiphospholipid syndrome (sticky blood creating blood clots). I think this is why I want to homestead. I need a stress free life (is that possible?). There are days I can hardly move. So I'm finally listening to my body and my soul and I'm seeking a different lifestyle.
    I'm so happy I found your channel. Much Love --- Merry Christmas!

      Hello Angie, I hope you are recovering well from your thumb surgery, you sure have had some health challenges this year, it definitely make you think about how you live and how you want to be living, doesn’t it.
      You are so right, it is very important to listen to our bodies and do good for our souls.
      Homesteading is a wonderful way of life and it has its own challenges but they are certainly worth it and it’s great for the soul.
      I love your dream/goals and look forward to hearing how your journey goes,
      Much love 💕

      Corey Dewhurst the Euroa Market is the 3rd Saturday of the Month 9am to 1pm, I’ll be there if I’m up to it on the day and it would be great to catch up.
      I am so thrilled your incubator is doing so well for you and especially with the hot weather.
      I am very tempted to go down that path myself, save my girls sitting and then put the babies under the hen once they’re a few days old. It’s tempting but could be addictive 😂

      Hello Lee Ann CrochetGottaLoveIt and welcome to Moat Cottage.
      I like to make Kumquat marmalade or a mixed citrus marmalade as well. In the mixed citrus marmalade I only chop the kumquats in half, To make it easy and they’re delicious. You can also wash, dry and freeze them in an air tight container. Then they can be used for marmalade at a later date or more brandy kumquats, later in the year. 😊 enjoy!

    Hi Elissa, I hope you’re on the mend. How many mls of Brandy to the half cup of sugar, or is this not so important.?

    • @MoatCottage
      @MoatCottage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Sally Mac, thankyou and yes I’m in recovery mode and doing well.
      I am using pint jars and fit in as many kumquats as I can, leaving room for the brandy to fully cover them.
      So it is slightly variable as to the amount of Brandy, but I do use 1/2 cup sugar per pint jar as what is not brandy will be kumquat deliciousness and it seems to always work well.
      I hope this helps, good luck 😀

  • @taleandclawrock2606
    @taleandclawrock2606 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is there any reason not to pre mix the sugar in the brandy before adding it to the cumquats?

    • @MoatCottage
      @MoatCottage  ปีที่แล้ว

      You never know the exact amount of Brandy you’ll be using it depends on the size of the fruit and how many are in the jar. You could mix the sugar first if you want but it’s not really necessary as it eventually dissolves in.
      Either way it’s delicious and perfect for this season’s harvest 😀
