*drills in a rad, punctures the tube, seals it back up with epoxy, has the glorious idea of just using double-sided tape, finds another rad, drills in this one as well* classic
After this video my face is watercooled by the sweat.
I got panic attacks by looking at his drilling tech, doesn't he have some kind of metal plate to stick in there?
Arguably still better than the time he didn't want to wait for mounts for the 22 core Xeon, so he removed the socket bracket and zip tied the cooler to the motherboard.
I got panic attacks he drilling into metal without goggles.
Jesus, why not go out and buy another radiator?
6:59 "because i CANNOT risk a leak..."
10:14 - fixes punctured radiator with epoxy
I proba4 just flex/Teflon tape it, gotta give the man credit.

Woken in a nutshell
After killing a rad by drilling trough it:
"I could have used double sided tape instead of drilling"
Shortly later, with a new rad:
*drilling again*
😂
Ricardo Pesenti Not so rad
Ricardo Pesenti
Because he already had holes in the case.
Whare was the pillar drill when you need it oh yeah and the breathing space for that rad.....
@9:25 is where that happens. It's good to have sponsors when you are a klutz like Linus is...free stuff comes in the mail all the time I suppose.
love tap
Put the ghetto watercooled server on top of racks, on top of racks, on top of all of your data. I see no problems here.
Im calling it now, it will leak on the 1 petabyte server.
karlpc200 lol so true. Then we will get petabyte server drive recover part 100000
Indeed
Tbh, if they are so stupid to watercool (unneeded actually) a server in a rack and endanger the whole server rack with being flooded, they deserve it.
They arent new to electronics, but as time goes on, they are way less caring about/with equipment and give a shit about it.
May be fun to look at for some time, but after a while I seriously doubt LTT for having an actual appreciation for the stuff they use.
This channel is heading downhill now for a few months.
Dont know why tho.
implying no one expects that
Lol
FYI Helium drives are sealed so theoretically the drives should not be damaged, open connections easily could though.
I'm ready for the 15 part series: whole server room water cooling
Not again !!
rice9221 can't wait!
everyone upvote this so it happens
rice9221 only if they lea4ned there lesson from last time
*WWW - Whole Warehouse Watercooling
Its videos like these that make me wonder how that man still has all 10 fingers.
Linus needs workmens comp coverage -;
@Everything Else right i mean as many times linus drops things or get fried lol
Whoa, a LTT without a random advertisement at the end.
You forgot the tunnel bear ad
Dloweification blue apron is place to go for all your food needs
I see them every day on floatplane
PUT WATER TUBES ON TOP OF THE PETABYTE SERVER
WHAT COULD GO WRONG??????
Everything
I seriously don't understand why he doesn't simply put it on the bottom...
The further down it is, the more dust it accumulates.
the hard drives are most likely will be fine because their completely sealed off so water is not gonna get inside them but the water will most likely mess up the other shit
Couldn't he just put the petabyte project above the water cooled server?
"I should've used two-sided tape for the radiator, why did I risk drilling it in the first place?"
Proceeds to drill the second radiator.
He had already drilled the holes and counter sunk them... might as well use them at that point.
THANK YOU!
Then there will be no clearance under the rad for the fans to draw air from. The tape comment was in fact wrong.
Felipe this is linustechtips...
tape is a shit solution anyways.
Let me just use this square hockeypuck. Thats the most canadian thing ever.

"There's a right way to do it,and there's our wrong way to do it" --Linus. 100% legitimate quote
"I AM TAKING NO RISKS OF LEAKING" proceeds to drill into the rad, seals it with epoxy and calls it a day
derchesten I was going to comment the same thing but checked to see if anyone else had
I did as well, but got tired after like 15 comments, following the guidance of guru linus of the epoxy seals
TheMiningWaffle Same.
If a cars radiator is leaking from a huge gouge and JB Weld can stop it I'm sure he's fine
Calls it a day? He swapped out to a new radiator that wasn't drilled through lol.
Just put it on the bottom or the rack then you won't have to do another all our data is gone videos
ya that would be fun to watch. he probably would get alot of views
i remember u from the ncix tech tips windows sponsorship comment.
Some men just want to watch the world burn :P
the HDDs are the helium filled water-resistant ones, no?
well, if there are any spillage, it will probably damage the pcbs of the other components. and since linus' servers are basically constantly 24/7, a sudden failure of the raid controllers would at best, result in the loss of the raid controllers, and at worst, the corruption beyond restore of every file on the petabyte project. but at least if worsts comes to worsts, we will at least get all our data is gone pt2.
Somewhere out there, JayzTwoCents is crying
Someone out there is watching this at 8k god some reason
only 4k here
@@snazzysnazzergryphon8550 They upload in 4k, though...

"I should have just used double sided tape..."

*Drills into it*
Get rid of 10Gb network in order to have a wanky watercooled server.
Makes sense xD
Linus: "I'll just drill into this radiator taking no precautions."

If you really wanted to cut leak risk down from fittings. You should have used Teflon tape on all the male threads. You never know when an o ring will go bad. If a fitting does loosen the seal stays, also it keeps fittings from wanting to unscrew.
Teflon tape is only effective on tapered pipe threads.
*Screw It*
Pretty sure 'the editing team asked me to build this' is code for 'I wanted to build this'.
Has make sure there are no leaks because this will be above the petabyte server.
Stay tuned for "Repairing the water damaged petabyte server"
lol.
didn't age
14:29 lmao...We have another rad, next frame he's drilling through it!
ikr
3d print spacers? most would just use washers...
Thank you!!!! I said the same exact thing >
This was the first LTT video i ever watched, this is the 10th time i watched it in half a year.
why can't you just dump ice all over in the server box?
Choi Does like he said, it will melt. You could use milk for the server, it will eventually turn into a solid which will fill all the cracks and crevices to keep it cool
The biggest problem with putting Ice is that is blocks the air flow.
Choi Does You Reminded me of How To Basic's cooling vid. Probably the last thing you want to do.
the ice would stop the fans from spinning, besides that don't see why you can't just dump frozen water on a pc
Yeah, liquid nitrogen doesn't melt.
"We need to make sure it is never going to leak"
5mins later
*drills hole straight through rad and fills it with epoxy*
James Craig my thoughts exactly
I have to say, fair play LTT for publishing such an honest video for such a major channel. I've worked with 1U, 2U servers and the whole format is so problematic!
Mechanic here. Dont know a lot about computers but love whatching this.
Get to make a lit of things from scratch (work on semi fleet for a company) and i can relate to a lot of this.
I was sincerely expecting to hear "There's a right way to do it, and there's our way to do it".
Leonel Cantú de Llano He did, he said "The wrong way"
Yeah, thats what I was expecting too....
Leonel Cantú de Llano
haha yea
.. there's the right way.. then there's the linus way.
Tightens fittings with pliers to avoid leaks at all cost - uses a glued together radiator that is destined to leak at one point or another... #justlinusthings
He switched the radiator out in the vid.
yeah but he wouldve used it
Done right, the glue would've sealed the cooler. I find it more "concerning", that he found a second cooler and decided to drill again. Even though he had the idead that he could've glued it into place.
9:27 Linus, my man. You held it back and managed it, extremely well - with your demeanour. My fullest respect to you..
It's great that you don't hide the mistakes, problems and challenges, but instead present how you deal with it. Kudos! Thanks.
"No unnecessary risks" Does unprofessional water cooling over thousands of dollars worth of servers. LTT all right
More like LMG cause the channel will still be fine, LMG on the other hand though...
@@scinorandex thats fax
Cannot risk a leak, ill super tighten fittings, run tiny tubing runs to reduce precipitation and finish it off with this radiator i've jankily repaired using epoxy......
TheMooseAider He changed the rad
And drilled into that one too
AND PLACE A 1000TB SERVER BELOW IT
TheMooseAider he used a fresh radiator in the end though
i know he changed the rad, was just highlighting the thought process, or lack thereof, to even consider repairing the rad in the first place.
Best vídeo so far. Please make more server room stuff. NAS/Servers/PDU/KVM/UPS/Disaster Recovery/Room cooling/Server maintenance. Love your videos 👍🏼
Thank you for doing exactly what I have wondered about for years!
"We can't afford any leaks", proceeds to drill through the radiator and fix it with glue
every mistake in the book. will done
along with drilling into the new Rad to make the holes bigger again.
*well
*do
love linus he is like any one
unless some time the writer do...
The irony lol
Are you sure your editing staff ain't going to remote desktoping into it to play Crisis?
we need more videos like this please linus!
Did anyone else cringe when Linus started drilling on the second radiator, after just saying he should have used double-sided tape? I did. I was almost certain he was going to drill right through it. Also, Linus, WTH were you thinking putting a repaired radiator you hadn't tested into a unit right above your future petabyte storage?
Lol That whole video I was just yelling "STOP! For the love of God, Linus! Just stop!"
michael gregory Like honestly if I were Linus I would place the water-cooled render machine on the lowest point of the server rack and have a container in the bottom to stop any water from pooling on the floor. So that way if it leaks it won't damage any other machines in the rack
I just imagine a guy screaming at a computer screen "STOP! for the love of God, Linus! Just stop!" and it's a pretty funny scene.
Yes...so much cringe in this video.
I could be wrong, but he might have been tapping (cutting new threads) in the holes so the screws would thread into the radiator brackets instead of going all the way through the radiator. If he had to reverse the drill out instead of just pulling it out, then that's probably what he was doing. If he just pulled it out then he must have been making the holes bigger for some reason.
I was just about to say the same. The man never learns. I've given up on him ever actually thinking anything through
Its the honesty in Linus' videos that keep me coming back.
I feel every dropped screw, i did it today even, and decided to go get a screwdriver that was actually magnetic.... and it fits. that kinda made a whole lotta difference. And got me done with my new hardware assembly ;)
listen bro your the best out there period and its killing me watching you pop holes in that rad like that ! dude for a dollar you can buy a "bit stop"a simple ring wih a set screw that will slide up and down the bit for depth
This might sound crazy guys, but what if they like, did a whole room water cooling?
They've already done that
Swoosh
steffeeH captain obvious here xD
That's the joke.
Ba dum tssh.
Drilling a hole in a rad like that... what would you expect. Linus needs to chill with these projects lol he broke the screen in the razer project and now this.
All he would of needed was a drill press, not even a good one!
Would HAVE*
010FSL101 what I want to know is how the rad is getting or releasing air...there's literally no ventilation on either side...
There is, only a few mm, that's what the broken acrylic pieces were for
he breaks everything, its expected
My favourite kind of ltt video. Just getting stuff done and solving problems on the go
Wow this was funny. Linus and drills and Radiators can get real dicey. Glad the build worked though.
This is my favorite type of Linus video. I don't like the scripted ones as much
Just like in the wanky garage and kitchen set old days. Never forget the days of the racing dildos.
Alberto Borjas wut
+Olly Fenn you must be new here :D
Alberto Borjas I still go back and watch those vids over and over
next video ... Petabyte project drowned OOPS
Thanks!
verry well

I love watching Linus f up and seeing his reaction.
There's the right way to do it.....and then there's the Linus way to do it.
Keep up the great work!! Your videos are great!
Btw you can just put this below 1pB server
CJ636C65 this needs to be the top comment XD
My guess is that it's too heavy for it to be safely mounted higher.
Agreed
Roman Larenas it doesn't matter, Servers don't rest on each other, each individual case has its own railing system supporting the full weight
+Roman Larenas 2U higher would not be a problem. Trick is to lift each 45drive cabinet 2U separately, while temporarily handing off the full load to another cluster member so drives can be spun down while moving.
"I should have just mounted the radiator with double sided tape"
*proceeds to drill through another radiator*
Thought this same thing haha
Hodor Q
Hodor hold the radiator hold the radiator hodor
the classical music in the background makes me feel like LTT is trying to educate it's viewers on more than just computers ... how dare you sir!
its not it's
This is you BEST Video ever because of the my favorite classical music ever, being played in the background.
"This will be mounted ABOVE petabyte project"
but why tho
This.
apoclypse ^^^^^this
Heaviest items (batteries, storage, etc.) toward the bottom, lighter things (CPUs, networking, etc.) toward the top. They can always put a plastic "diaper" on the water cooled unit to protect what's below, draining any leaks away from the rack.
CellDevises for weight reasons
Why don't you have a drill press ffs? Always seeing you guys using hand drills for delicate work...
because you dont really need a drill press. i mean they are nice and all but its not required.
He drilled a hole in a radiator.
but is it working? yes.
Whats the issue son
Im pretty sure ive seen a press in other videos, would be the smart thing hey...
actually he fixed it with epoxy, and said he fixed one before like this and worked fine for many year's. couldn't use it yet since the epoxy hasn't hardened enough...
This was awesome. I demand more server videos!
dang this is some serious work right here, nice job linus
Of course you had a hockey puck around...
Well he is Canadian
Is it racist to make those comments, or is it nationalist?
Canadians aren't a race
oh burn
Or a real country

Oscar Velazquez I know but it rhymes as well.
Oscar Velazquez

I really appreciate this video on a different level. Only because you showed us that you are in fact human and not some kinda super wizard!
I think I just realized, after watching the server room vlog, that this takes place in the future! the room is so much more clean than before. Ah the power of editing.
There is an awful lot oh "HISS" in this video. Kinda annoying.
EDIT: typo.
wat
dont hear it, fix your shit headphones
it's there, just not all the time, get your ears checked
airolospacca waful
Yeah there is definitely one, it was annoying me as well
You should have made an "Whole server-room watercooling project" :D
AudioPhil96 Put the whole server room into the sea.
iHypez How about an acrylic pool in the center of the warehouse where the servers are submerged in mineral oil? :D
AudioPhil96 Then thats not "water"cooling :o
Then, it would have been a LTT project, this is a fucking test.
Whole server-room submerged in phase-changing liquid nitrogen.
11:21 Guess what, that's when he realised... he *SCREWED* up! XD
love this kind of videos, old school LTT
"We have another rad!" *immediately starts drilling into it* I cringed.
Sean Martinson thought the same thing I saw him drilling and I was like wtf why no double sided tape
Tape would be much worse.
Sean Martinson mee too
well i mean its purpose is sitting horizontally in a rack
its enough to fix it in place with a very good double sided tape onto the chassis for moving around on its right side up
anyway why he pulled out second after he screwed everthing togeder ....
Am I the only one who hears a loud static noise when playing the video? Or am I tripping?
Kirill Tolstykh Nah man I hear it too, you ain't crazy
Yep. It's consistent all the way through to 7:38 and then it comes and goes constantly. At first I thought it was background noise, but it stay consistent everywhere he goes so its probably the mic.
Kirill Tolstykh I was going to say it's the server then I turned up my volume
That is the buggy Premier denoiser effect.
Linus, please make them apply it on the whole audio channel that way, there shouldn't be any noise spikes.
It's the fans I think
I love the classical music in the background. You should do that more often
Nice and cool, fitting in that kind of server cisco project

I have the right fitting
Oh now I'm having fun
He's not wrong, you gotta make sure the fitting is ready for the pump.
microsoft does water cooling right
put the whole damn thing in the bottom of a lake
Kaby Lake, to be more precise.

No it was microsoft. They submerged their entire data servers in the ocean.
I love this channel, helps me get through my break up.
DAMN professional work! I'm proud of you Linus! :D
am i the only one noticing alot of white noise on this video?
Nope, me too
Linus was so mad his anger coalesced into an audible hum.
Yeah Linus is pretty loud.
Huh, I think it's the loud server fans.
I noticed like halfway through the video that they tried to clean it up, but the noise filter was cutting in and out, also making Linus sound like he was on a 0.1 bitrate stream. Very weird and not expected in an ltt video...
Why is the server room so small?
Why isnt this a decent space?
Cause i think its not gonna be future proof, such a small room, for their server.
They literally used the cupboard under the stairs...
Also because storage space for unused components is more important than a decent server room in LTT world. :D
For what would they need more/bigger servers?
Their servers handles all the rendering (and storage) of all their videos. More power = faster rendering = can put up videos faster and more often, not to mention all the manhours wasted waiting.
+Qun heuang how large is your server room?
What i love about Linus, he real world - wings it. Frustration shows, and is exactly real life! :-)
I would have stopped at the point with drilling the rad and take a looooong break :D
Thanks for entertaining us so much!
I just love watching Linus and his build projects. Drills, screws, cables, swarf flying everywhere, the odd swear thrown in, hindsight thoughts... entertainment galore!
I will laugh if this leaks over petabyte project.
You're not by far the only one expecting for that to happen....
Josh Bahr not if when
wow first video in a while that actually got to the point nicely
Guys, you're really awesome, that kind of life, is my dream, and I hope one day I would be like you.I'm considered as computer genius, I started programming at 8 years with C, and It was awesome, I hope it will be useful in my resume in the soon future.
Love the new music choice lately.
This.

Yeah it does.

but linus doesnt need to pull out anymor ;)

i was cutting out spacers out of an old aluminium case for my setup which i build to hang at my rooms wall.... so don't worry, u r not alone Linus :D
Pure genious. Please, do more of theese janky hacks!! This is the reason I'm subscribed
Oh great. A new WHOLE room water cooling series...
Nathan Trone
if it kept the other room cool then why not xd
why not use mineral oil for the cooling loop instead of water so you have even more safety
because mineral oil has a lower thermal capacity and conducts heat much less effectively. It can also destroy the tubing...
And it's also a fucking nightmare to clean up if it leaks.
oh ok coz i know its not electrically conductive so for petabyte project underneath it would be a life saver if it leaked
because mineral oil is more viscus then water thus it would wear out the pump a lot faster as well as require a lot more effort to drain and flush the potential for mess is higher. also the results wouldnt be much different.
bmxriderforlife1234 yes the result would be very different
Idk if anyone else noticed but the editing on this video is top notch. Had me rolling
I was watching him drill that rad, yelling at the TV(while my wife told me to shut up), "Stop you are going to drill the rad!"
Hilarious...!
Lets expose as little tubing as possible in order to avoid any problems 312 years from now. But let's drill a hole into a radiator then, fix it with epoxy. Amazing.
The "that'll do" method at work here lol.
14:33 - 14:47
Close your eyes and let imagination sink in
Luis Ramirez this shit!!"!!
i just love this comment
love how he makes videos about things for editing video
Nice Work Linus
more like "A right way to do it, then the Linus way of doing it".
Thats what i was thinking too
Do you live in the Sahara desert? Because I hear slithering from this video.
ikr fcking annoying
And one more thing - open ended cable combs work great as spacers AND for holding the screw in place on like m3-m8? Somewhere in that range. Use small wire cutters to clip the comb apart. An 8 wire comb will net you 4 spacers/clips.
Really like this kind of videos 👍🏼
