  • A friend of mine came across an XS650 engine that was taken apart and stored in several boxes, I have the task to put this beast back together and get her running once again, this will be in several parts as I will need to purchase missing or broken unusable parts throughout the build.

Back in the early nineties, I bought seven basket case XS 650's, for about four hundred bucks, and built them all and sold them, to pay for one together with the rings seized. I had the stock 82 electronic ignition in one that needed the top end swapped, and ended building two or three with the same kind and they worked great. I'd highly recommend the late XS stock electronic, if you can find it, good setup, works very reliable. I regret selling any of those, I'm riding a 78 Bonnie, that cost over six thousand. I've been enjoying your build, even a few years late. I really like those Yamaha 650's, even if I did buy a triumph, again. Thanks! From the States.

OB, I had a Tach drive oil seal in my kit. Where does it go? So I find it goes under the threaded portion you almost unscrewed. Bugger to get out unless you heat it with a heat gun, then it comes out easy. On tear down, I pulled the taco drive out of the case before I took the case off. Then I see a guy that had an oil leak in this area. He said he didn't want to pull the Taco drive out or else he would lose the "thrust washer" ( on the bottom of the shaft that keeps the shaft from eating the case). He said what? So I see you didn't install a thrust washer on the end of your shaft. I look at the parts break down and sure enough, the washer has to be there. Hummm, it must have stayed with the case when I pulled the shaft out. Then I washed it out and who knows... So Another week till I get the new washer in. Sometimes the simple jobs are not so simple. Ride Safe.

I never had the washer and like you had to find one and put it in at a later date, I should have mentioned the washer when inserting the taco drive but forgot due to old age I reckon :/ The case was a little worn where the drive gets inserted and looked like the dude who made a mess of the engine in the first place had also lost it and left it out. The engine that I built will have that drive shaft removed and a blanking plug put back in its place at a later date anyway, so all the searching for the washer was a waste of time in the end haha

I was thinking, "what is the stuff he is using to lift the paint in the oil filter well, not sodium hydroxide surely, that stuff dissolves aluminium".

ha ! came to the same conclusion about fitting the woodruff key lol th-cam.com/video/7UevW4T63VY/w-d-xo.html.
i thought that your oil pump /tacho shaft sounded worn ? it sounded noisy and looked a bit wobbly when you spun the pinion. The shaft might need shimming to take up a bit of end float on the oil pump or pinion ? Mine seemed to spin a lot quieter in the vid
The filter housing came up real clean.....good jawb
Have you fitted the Boyer yet ? I couldn't see if it was an electronic advance model or not .
I would write to the bolt supplier and tell them the packaging for the bolt was too little lol............ mind you if the threaded bar arrived bent there would have been some Tourettes

Hi John, the washer was missing on the end of the shaft, that's now been resolved which has stopped all the free play, I am again stuck trying to find the kick start shaft washer now, you know the one between the shaft and outer casing, until I get that, everything is on hold.

@@OldBiker I'm pretty sure that the shim you need is a 25 x 35 x 1mm . If you stick your vernier guage on your kickstart shaft you will be able to confirm. From memory it is identical to the valve shim washers .
I always buy quality generic bearings , oil seals and shim washers direct from specialist Companies online. I find that if you buy specific 'Yamaha XS650 ' parts you end up buying the same parts at inflated prices.
