Japanese pronunciation... Shi bu ya!, etc. Lol - all phonetics..... I was just in Japan for the 1st time in many years and got headbutted by a deer! IC card, transferwise, and google maps make travel so easy!
I have been a long time subscriber, until this video, the pronunciation, the ignorance about places, general knowledge stuff like hashiko statue, and the vending machine thing, come on, there are videos of people doing like 100 unique vending machines but you think there is only the drink ones, come on if you have many followers don't be so ignorant and do some research before spreading ignorance and lack of research
In fact, Tokyo's population is about 14.27 million, and during the day, when you add in people commuting to work or school from nearby areas, as well as Japanese and foreign tourists, the total is estimated to be around 16.5 to 17 million. The 38 million mentioned in the program is the population of the "Tokyo Metropolitan Area," which consists of the capital Tokyo and the three prefectures of Saitama, Chiba, and Kanagawa, making it the largest metropolitan area in the world.
The beauty of Japanese vending machines are that they may look uniform but the challenge is to find the quirky ones hidden in the most unexpected places. For eg in a small street on the way to Omate Sando, there’s just a random one selling bottles of 700ml whisky or sake for cheap. Also in winter, the uniqueness is serving hot canned drinks like coffee and matcha. A trick is when your hands are frozen from walking your 20k steps, getting 1 hot canned coffee from these vending machines to be stuffed inside your jacket pocket to warm your hands can feel god-given. Trust me, Tokyo never ceases to amaze and you’ll find the quirkiest stuff in the most mundane things that we take for granted. First time back in 2014 and I’ve been back 12x (alone and also with family) and could have been more if not for Covid.
I love how this video turned out and your messages during it. As a photographer myself I applaud you that you didn't pull out your camera when you had a special experience. I love Japan and thanks for showing us more cool places.
Just came back from a trip to korea and Japan. Really beautiful countries and Japan is absolutely fantastic. I had no expectations on Tokyo, I thought it was a mess, but I loved it and went everywhere and I completely fell in love with it. It's clean, transportation system is amazing and if you move from the center area, it's like a small village. Japan is really something and Japanese people are gentle and always try to help you!
For myself as a cyclist, the vending machines were awesome while in Japan. Loved it that they were just everywhere. Up in the mountains, in the middle of endless fields, just random vending machines on the side of the road everywhere. They were clutch.
Welcome to Tokyo, Paddy! I love your Thailand videos and now I’m so impressed to see Tokyo, where I’ve been living for most of my life, from your unique perspective! I hope you are having a good time here, and I’m looking forward to the next episode of Japan.
Tip- if u use the subway 3+ times in a day- which is highly likely for tourists get a all day subway pass (for both lines combined) - basically everything tourist typically want to see can be reached by subway.
I remember going to Tokyo 24 years ago and seeing coffee in a can for the first time !!! And to top it off it was in a vending machine !i was so amazed that i wrote about it in a postcard home :)
I always loved how things make you travel or visit places... Whether it's a football match, concerts or a few star wars locations lol... It's a great random route to see new things man! Glad you had a good time man!
That’s a very informative video about Tokyo. You’ve done a pretty good job in making this video and making it easy to understand for a first time visitor to Tokyo. I’m visiting Japan around February and it’ll be my first time too
I love how you describe the futuristic, yet analogue experience. When I visited it felt like there must have been a moment in time where their technology just took a different direction. It was sort of like what someone in the 80's would have pictured as the future.
Usually Paddy will butcher a name for a couple of times before getting close to the acual name after that. This time the pronunciation of Shibuya was a shambles from beginning to end. Hilarious!
So glad you are visiting Japan! I lived in Japan for 3 years. This time of year the weather is perfect. Looking forward to hearing about your explorations!
@paddydoyle you seemed to have no clue about the famous statue of the dog (Hachiko) in this video. You’re always so good at the facts around these types of local things. Later today we watch a video of yours from a year ago in Chiang Mai in the “Tokyo” style area and you gave great interesting details about the statue of the same dog there. Just thought it was funny as I was all thrown when you knew nothing of the famous story in this video. 😂 Love the videos. This just made me chuckle.
The talk about the vending machines at around 13:20 was David Brent-esque, ha! Subbed for that alone, but will continue watching the vlogs ahead of my first Tokyo trip. Best of luck!
We cannot wait to head over there Paddy! Flights and hotel already booked; but this won’t be taking place until March 😂 after our 3 months in Thailand 🇹🇭 Thank you for posting this video 😊
I'm Japanese, but Akihabara is interesting... It's fun because people who visit Japan are enthusiastically shopping for electrical appliances and other things. Isn't it good🇯🇵
There's a really sweet story behind that famous Dog and Hollywood made a movie about it later. Plus he's an icon that you'll notice all around the city on buses etc.❤

Thank you for coming to Japan! The area he calls "dangerous" in the second half of the video is the plaza next to the Toho Cinema in Kabukicho. It is certainly a famous dangerous area that is rare in Japan. Boys and girls who ran away from home and the homeless gathered there, Bad adults are targeting children who have run away from home. At night, the number of such people increases and the streets are full of garbage. This has become a social issue.😢 It is commonly called Toyoko. I don't think it usually poses a threat to tourists or people just walking by. It's a place you shouldn't go too often. For those who come sightseeing, please be careful...!🥲
I have been waiting for this vlog for a long time, Paddy. I love Japan and you have finally made it! I am surprised that for such a major country and beginning of a new series, that you didn't have an intro to it like your Vietnam and Philippines series. I am so glad you showcased Golden Gai, which was the most unique part of Tokyo. I agree Shinjuku is a bit dodgy, but it was my favorite part of the city without a doubt. Looking forward to this series!
I was excited to see you are in Japan. It was you who inspired me to start vlogging - as I like your style, your genuine storytelling and how you just take people along on your trips. Something I'm trying to do with my newish (small channel) and I am nowhere near your filming or editing level. sooooo glad to see you in Japan though. I just finished a month across Japan from North to south - in mountains, beaches and the most surreal places (off the beaten path!). I'd love fo you to check out some of our locations - and highly suggest Onomichi - seriously one of our top towns (and that famous bike ride is soooo doable!). Anway - congrats on all your success here Paddy - you really deserve it! Also - a REALLY NEAT place in Tokyo, Shimo-Kita-Zawa neighbourhood - not touristy at all - all vintage and we had the BEST okonomiyaki there! -Zoe
You do realize they have vending machines that sell hot drinks too right? Not many places have that. They adjust the hot/cold drink ratio throughout the year. So precious about Shinjuku...
Paddy, I’ve missed you, not you personally per se, but I enjoy listening to your English (King’s English?). After listening to the constant drum of rap commercials, Ebonics and gutter speech, I thoroughly enjoy listening to you. Your Tokyo trip was great. I’ve been following you since Dreamy. Great work. Thank you.
Meiji Jingu, did you go there on a weekday? We went there on a Sunday, and it was packed… It’s a shame I missed this video of yours. Apparently, when you enter and leave the main area, you have to bow. Learned it from a sweet girl who kindly offered to walk with us to Akihabara station.
We are ALWAYS in the same country. We were at the same time in Argentina, south Korea, Thailand, Switzerland and now Japan. Please don't tell you'll be in Australia in December
Interesting video, I do think you're underselling Shinjuku a bit, it's much more than just Kabukicho, the skyscraper district is interesting, and there some good restaurants, as well as amazing transport links. I do love Omoide Yokocho for getting some dinner, much more atmospheric than Golden Gai.
Welcome to Tokyo, Paddy! Hope you're having a blast. If you venture over to the East side of Tokyo (Asakusa, Ueno, Tokyo Skytree) and need a guide/fancy some company, let me know. From a fellow Englishman and long time resident of Tokyo. 🙂
There are loads of weird food vending machines that are really fun and interesting - not just the coke machines. Also the famous dog waited for their owner for years (who had died I think)
Always enjoy watching Paddy I’ve been to Japan myself but only ever been to Osaka I’ll enjoy watching this series,,,peace and happiness and safe travels 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
thanks for bringing back great memories!! Tokyo is incredible. The food is delicious, even if they lack of veggies and fruits XD fruits are so expensive there. Enjoy the rest of your stay!!
Awesome. Brought back memories of my visit to Tokyo way back in '91!!!! I hope to bring my daughter there sometime soon. My dream (as two of my acquaintances have already) is to run into you somewhere and share beers and stories (maybe in BKK this December). It is reported that you are just as cool in person as you present on your videos.
Graet video Paddy. Like yourself. my 1st visit to Tokyo next March for 12 daays. iM an australian living in Thailand as well. Doing plenty of simple research to exploior this hugh city. Thanks & cheers.

You and your girlfriend should experience an onsen (hot spring) if you have the time. But then again looks like you’re traveling in warmer weather. I usually go in cooler weather and love soaking in an onsen. The last time we were there for six weeks ( last year) and for six nights we stayed at different onsens. Btw, looks like you got ripped off paying 4,000 yen for a beer in Kabukicho. Not sure if you walked around Shimbashi at night along the train line yet. It’s like going back to the 60’s and 70’s. It’s not a known tourist area. Thank god we found that place. Ps: loved the look on your face when you saw those Go- Karts 😂😂..
I'm a big fan of yours Paddy, living in Thailand also and have followed you since the beginning of your 'Every province in Thailand' began. My family have now been to 60 provinces in Thailand which we started in part, because of your story and wanted to take on the challenge ourselves. This video in particular was very low energy, seemed to have no direction, very little information about the places you visited, which is not normal for your channel. Due to low light the quality of the video was quite bad in many shots, the music used just did not work, overall it really felt like little to no effort was put into this. Pick it up Paddy!
Taiwan next? Visit me here if you come! We're just next door...October is the best month to visit...Judging by your Newcastle pre-season match comments, this video was recorded a month or so ago, so I guess you are no longer in the neighborhood. But if you ever come, you're always welcome. I've lived here 35 years , so I know the place pretty well...
If you enjoyed this exploration of Tokyo then please SUBSCRIBE as we have more content on Japan coming in the next few weeks!
Japanese pronunciation... Shi bu ya!, etc. Lol - all phonetics..... I was just in Japan for the 1st time in many years and got headbutted by a deer! IC card, transferwise, and google maps make travel so easy!
Yeeeeee.. Thanks for sharing your this amazing footage in Tokyo.. 😊

One of the cleanest, safest and most beautiful countries on the planet . Absolutely amazing experience.

Tokyo (and Japan) is such a SPECIAL place. I finally went this year - wow, just wow, incredible memories and I can't wait to go back
37 million people. Almost no litter. No graffiti. No dregs or homeless wandering aimlessly. How refreshing compared to the US cities.
Homeless exist, they’re just well hidden by the Tokyo metropolitan govt sadly.
Attraction of Tokyo can not be overstated, and a unimaginable Mysterious atmosphere and full of delicious foods unique to Japan
I love how this video turned out and your messages during it. As a photographer myself I applaud you that you didn't pull out your camera when you had a special experience. I love Japan and thanks for showing us more cool places.
I was so torn, I wanted to share the crazy experiences but at the same time I wanted to be in the moment FULLY

That would make sense as Japan’s economy peaked in 80s and 90s
日本は90年代半ばまでは日々急速に進歩していたのが感じられた。その後は今に至るまで進歩のスピードが世界と比較して緩慢。
Usually Paddy will butcher a name for a couple of times before getting close to the acual name after that. This time the pronunciation of Shibuya was a shambles from beginning to end. Hilarious!

13:36 The biggest disappointment for me is how high you wear those football socks, it's the reason you sweat alot Paddy 😂😂
I came to the comments to see if anyone else noticed how ridiculously high Paddy wears his socks 😅 he must be boiling as they’re almost to his knees!
🤣
He wears them normally but has very short legs maybe? 😂😂
@@josiedoyle1600 🤣 maybe that’s it!
I've been looking forward to this series. Looks like an amazing place!
I'm Japanese, but Akihabara is interesting... It's fun because people who visit Japan are enthusiastically shopping for electrical appliances and other things. Isn't it good🇯🇵
I have done a total of nine trips to Tokyo and I only feel now that I am scratching the surface. I have another trip this December!!
He called a Crown Super Saloon "just a little old banger". 🤣
Been looking forward to these vids Paddy. Was great to meet you briefly at the toon events
There's a really sweet story behind that famous Dog and Hollywood made a movie about it later. Plus he's an icon that you'll notice all around the city on buses etc.❤

'shi-bu-ya *BOO YAH" paddy!
Came here to sa y this. He'll get it 😂
Hahhahaha funny thing is he kept repeating it wrong a couple of times. Love Paddy 🤣🤣

Visiting Japan and not knowing who Hachiko was might just be a crime
We are ALWAYS in the same country. We were at the same time in Argentina, south Korea, Thailand, Switzerland and now Japan. Please don't tell you'll be in Australia in December
the great thing with the vending machines is that you can buy "warm" coffee :D
loved it but yeah in general its nothing special at all.
Welcome to Japan 🇯🇵😊❤
Loving your videos mate, keep up the awesome work. You should visit New Zealand sometime
Paddy we love seeing your adventures! Keep up the great work :)
Paddy, great video and it's very easy! C'mon! Sushi ro! 😂
They have vending machines on streets with hot dishes, not just liquids. Seeing one vending machine, and you’re already dissing it. Wow
Paddy thanks for another great video, you do make me laugh especially the section about the vending machine 😂

Wonderful vlog as always👌🏽 may I ask the name of the hotel you stayed in at the beginning of the vlog?

Cool introduction to Japan ❤
The little go karts going past at the intersection are a guided tour you can do there if i remember rightly
Mario Kart
That hotel room was not cheap for sure LOL
I was Japan at the same time as you! I’d have definitely been drawn to the Newcastle kit if we crossed paths.

I press like before I even watch. Never disappointed. ❤
Over 35 million people live in one city...!!! 😱
As I wrote in another video...there are definitely too many people on this planet
Very timely video
I'm heading to Tokyo/Japan in a month
Wow..which hotel you staying in..looks great! Mine was only 11 sqm...Can only sleep straight straight with spouse lol.

All good
@@PaddyDoyle. Actually I was wrong Paddy The score was 3-1. Hope you come to Taiwan sometime!
Thank You Paddy 🙂❤👍
hope your enjoying your self in tokyo
What is the name of the hotel you’re staying at if you don’t mind telling? I stayed near Ginza the last time I was there.
That Newcastle dude was tall!
Hey man! If you're still in Tokyo and fancy a beer would love to grab one 🍻
Great JP.explore.good 4 you Paddy.
