  • Italian gymnast Carlotta Ferlito complained to an Italian interviewer that he "told [teammate Vanessa Ferrari] that next time we should also paint our skin black so then we can win too." Both apologized and Biles chose to ignore the commentary.

      @@aldopercussion642 you aren’t racist for saying she doesn’t have elegance … because she *doesnt* have elegance, but you’re missing the point …
      they were racist because her being black and having power aren’t related. either you can generate power or you can’t. and “painting your skin black” will not make the judges see you as more powerful or “less graceful”. Dominique Dawes is a black woman from the Magnificent Seven and she was *very* graceful. New flash, the era of “artistic” gymnastics is over and it has nothing to do with Simone. if anything Olga Korbut, a russian, started to place emphasis on power rather than beauty. That was in the 70s. A long line of powerful gymnasts came after her. grace hasn’t been at the forefront of most gymnasts minds in this day and age. Nastia Liukin and a few others kept to it, but even Nastia had power and her dad is Valeri Liukin, king of elegance!!!
      Simone’s race and her power aren’t one in the same and so saying something like that is stupid and obviously comes from a racist place. italians are known for being racists, but the weird part about the statement is that they aren’t even known for being good gymnasts to be speaking like that. the success of “eastern european” gymnast is due to mainly romania and russia, not italy. (i’m shocked that they included themself in that), but let’s not forget that simone was trained by the Károlyi’s who are responsible for the romanian and the america golden age of gymnastics. In fact, Dominique Dawes had them as her actual coach as they were coaches of the M7. so obviously the italians were just haters … do a pageant show or model if you want to be judged for JUST elegance. don’t get racist when someone new comes along and reminds you that you are in fact an athlete and this is a competition. “gym”nastics, done in a “gym”nasium. it’s a sport dude …
      does she have elegance? no. is she powerful and technically sound? yes. is that because she is black? no. so the italians should have stfu.

    • @JLMac322
      @JLMac322 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@aberamagold7509 not quite what happened, the actual story is even better. Backflips were already banned at the time, out of safety concerns but also because figure skating jumps are supposed to be landed on one foot. So Surya, in a sort of protest that she was being underscored, threw in a backflip during her routine. And she landed it on one foot! Other skaters could do backflips (and still do, just not in competition), but (iirc) no one had landed it one foot (and few can even today). The hope was that, since she'd landed it on one foot as all jumps are supposed to be, they'd count it. But they didn't. Funny thing is, everyone complained about her being too "athletic" and lacking grace (and yes she wasn't quite as fluid on many of her connecting moves), but nowadays these Russian girls and doing quads and backloading their program to get extra points, neglecting a lot of the grace and artistry of having a well choreographed routine, and they are praised for it and winning golds

      Watching Simone, I’m in awe of the routines she so brilliantly delivers.

    The Italian Federation spokesperson was not only racist, but also knowingly ignoring sports history on purpose to paint racism as a 'trend'. I remember that, during the times of the defunct GDR doping program, Eastern European 'elegant' gymnasts looked 10 times more muscular than Biles or any other 'athlete of color'. They very seldom won anything beyond vault, and no technical element was named after any of them, because they were not good at gymnastics, just artificially strong. Gymnastics scoring system grades exercises according to difficulty degree, elements are described in detail, listing how the execution should be and what mistakes get what penalties. If anybody performs an exercise exactly how the book says, judges should give it the corresponding high score; unless judges are biased, color doesn't play any role

Now, going deeper, judging a very complex performance sport will always be a very subjective activity no matter what, and if it's ever gonna be fair, then it will be necessary that the judges also come from all sides of the human diversity, which is happening very slowly I suspect. A judge that wants to be fair has to be mentally trained into suppressing the sympathy for those who look like him/her, which is a very powerful human tendency, and also look like the people who historically have been champions. Black peoples skin alone is worth millions. Melanin creates fast twitch muscle fibers that white athletes don't have. That's why Black people are physically capable of more during high impact sports & sports that involve running. It also helps many other things. Like brain power for example. Skeleton rigidity. That's why you RARELY see black people with horrible arthritis or osteoporosis.

      Honestly? I think the publicist was talking about body types. Simone is stocky and dense. Her legs go BOOM! I’m sure the girl speaking looks lithe like a typical ballerina, which is pretty, but maybe not strong enough to achieve the same feats 🤷🏾‍♀️ if trends in gymnastics are favoring a different aesthetic, it’s no difference than times in the past when thicker athletes didn’t fit the aesthetic.
