I think it's cool how subtly Ford differentiates between the Raptor and the Raptor R. The Raptor name is the top-of-the-line, cool truck, and it should feel like that, regardless of whether or not you got a factory-boosted engine. People who don't need extra power can buy a Raptor and feel like they are on top of the world even when parked next to someone with a Raptor R. I know for me if I had the money to spend on a Raptor with options, I'd feel more confident buying one when they are released, knowing that when the R finally comes around, I won't look like the guy who bought the second best.

Nobody told you to or asked you to, and besides it's fully loaded, the same would be the case if you fully load a base Raptor, only difference is the engine which adds on extra price. @@Captain-Awesome I grew up around racing and restoring cars.. I don’t need 700 HP in my truck. This is my first Raptor but have owned other trucks, including F-150. Let’s just say I definitely paid over MSRP.. is what it is and we can afford it. Finding a 37 isn’t easy. Finding Rapid Red isn’t easy.. finding both together meant pony’ing up if we wanted it .. or we could wait a year for a build. We have the means so we bought it.. hell, I was going to go 35 but wife and kids said GO BIG! .. so we did. What I found in MONTHS of looking and research is that CA dealerships buy up much of the non-CA Raptors they can find.. and pay other non-CA dealerships ADM.. because they know they can sell Raptors in CA for even more ADM. I know ADM gets people all emotional but you can’t change supply/demand. In fact, Ford could raise the MSRP of the Raptor $10K today and demand would be the same.. $ would just go to Ford instead of dealers. If you don’t mind waiting.. @@1mansarmy Well, that explains a lot. El Paso, Texas is a poor city, yet every damn vehicle is a Raptor, especially new ones. Doesn't make sense, as most of the drivers are Latino dudes below 40. Often hear about "high payments"...
@@nwezetx1 As a fellow El Paso resident, I agree. Raptors don't last more than 3 days at the dealerships. How people here are affording these payments with El Paso pay is insane to me.
The MPG point he makes is a good one. When I bought my garden variety Raptor, the Raptor R didn’t exist yet, but the TRX did. I got the Raptor because while the sound and power of the TRX are intoxicating, 9-12MPG hurts compared to 15-20m, and dropping $120 tank weekly vs. biweekly is something you notice. Doug getting 12 mixed on 37’s is actually kind of impressive.
@@bdan6954 One of the nice things about Raptors is that even before Covid broke the market, they hold their value remarkably well. Unless you plan on owning the vehicle until you die, you’re not spending 80K on it. The cost of the truck is basically the difference in what you buy it for and sell it, and considering I’ve owned my Raptor for a year and it hasn’t depreciated at all, it’s been a very cheap vehicle. When you view vehicle ownership in those terms, 2X fuel costs make it dramatically more expensive to own, because you’re not recovering any of that money.
I drive a 2014 Raptor, which is the last year of the 6.2 V-8... I get CAN get 16 on the highway, but realistically, it's 14.5... Not bad when you consider a 4Runner gets 17 and, well a Raptor is a thing of American Beauty 😎
Here in Germany you start to see more and more Ford & RAM Pickup Trucks. I think that's because at least Ford now sells them in German/Euro Spec here since they also started selling the current gen Mustangs in German/Euro Spec. Before that you only saw VW Amarok Pickups (which are amazing and hope Doug reviews one some day) and the Mercedes-Benz Pickup i forgot the Name of. It's funny how common Pickup Trucks are in the USA, while here they stand out more than an Audi R8 or a Porsche 911, both because they're rare and they're huge. I always wonder why so many Americans buy a huge Pickup but then only use it to go shopping or drive anywhere Prost & Cheers from the Bavarian Alps
Well they have more rear legroom than a standard wheelbase S class and they ride very nice since they haven't all gone down the trend of super low profile tires. That said, most of their use and capabilities are indeed wasted as a daily driver.
I've lived in a few different places in the United States and one thing they all had in common was some people buying pickups, and then not actually using them for work. I think it's a truck culture thing?
I think our roads/towns are just bigger, so the size of these trucks doesn't matter so much. With that not being a problem the massive towing capability and the usefulness of a truckbed really becomes a selling point. You can definitely get away with most work stuff using a van, but a truck bed is just preferred. And for those talking about security of a van, it's very common for folks to get shells for their bed if they're carrying valuable tools or w/e. Yeah trucks are less economical, but outside of special versions like this Raptor R, they've really leaned into the more efficient turbo engines and hell you have the F-150 Lightning now. And regardless, gas is just cheaper here than Europe. There's definitely a 'truck culture' in America, and some folks absolutely don't need one themselves, but they simply make sense here unlike other places.
Greetings! F150 owner living in USA. Pickup trucks are an all around most useful vehicle. I do tow and haul heavy loads in my truck, but it is also a fantastic family hauler. The ride is smooth and on road trips I can go 700 miles before needing to fuel up. A great family vehicle option imo
Euro spec cars > U.S. spec cars. Why? Simply because Euro spec cars don’t have those ugly orange and red side markers inside the headlights/taillights or fenders.
For about the same price there is the F-150 Shelby pickup (limited to 500 / year) which supercharged version of the car-tuned 5.05L Coyote (instead of the 5.2L) makes 770hp. The ~ U$110K MSRP is for that supercharged version. PERFORMANCE IS EXPEN$IVE!
@Raptor.Tremor of course it won't touch the Raptor on dirt, the Shelby is lowered on street tires for starters. It's a road truck. Nothing about it is meant for offroad.

@@DarkKatzy013 pretty sure he was talking about things besides the desert race/off road courses it was built for. Tbh, he might as well just said the entirety of the southwestern USA.
I was at the F150 plant 2 months ago and was watching how they made the Raptors and the regular F150’s. It was really cool especially how they put the sunroof in the trucks. Great Videos Thank You 🙏
I think these truck’s lack of differentiation from the regular Raptor in looks is a measure of how non-committed Ford is to the model type. They obviously made it as a counter to the TRX and I think assume it won’t be around long and thus they don’t want to spend a ton of extra money on exterior changes that they don’t feel they need to.
This is also probably the end of the line for factory gas brodozers. The next gen Raptor will probably have to be electric. Ford is likely shifting most of their development money into electric. The new Hummer has the same kind of excess, but it's electric. Ram has no money to develop EVs so who knows if there will be a TRX EV.
@@bwofficial1776 Not sure where tf you got that Ram has no money to develope EVs. That was the whole point in getting gobbled up into "Stellantis." Ram's front man has even hinted at such coming, so yeah.
@@bwofficial1776 you just sound like a ford fanboy in denial, does just can’t compete and it shows in the price, TRX still wins. Also they’ve been developing and have teased the Ram EV and a TRX EV. However the TRX is slated to stay in production until at least 2026.
@@AsianNIGMA I don't own either so Idc lol. But tests have shown the TRX beats the Ford in a quarter mile by half. Rolling start the Ford wins. Off road the Ford took the lead for the win. So they're pretty much equally great trucks.
That's ironic since there's a page of tons of brand new/low mileage TRX's broken down due to bad quality control (some of them haven't even left the factory)
I rode around in my grand pops 2020 F250 and that thing blew my mind. I though my mom’s Ford Edge was pretty big, that F250 is a behemoth. I’m long-legged and sitting in the rear seats of that crew cab I had so much room! My legs were spread out! My buddy has a 10th gen F150 4-door and I thought I had room in the back of that thing. Trucks are getting ever-bigger and me personally I just want an older Ford ranger, Nissan hardbody, Toyota pickup and I’ll be so happy.
I completely agree with Doug commenting on how subtle the raptor R is. Considering how much more expensive it is than the standard raptor Ford needed to do a little bit more to differentiate the two trucks.
The Ram TRX is rather subtle as well though, as subtle as a giant truck can be; not much badging saying what it is, most people probably don’t have a clue.
Doug, awesome review! I watched all the way through and read far down the comment section and found no references to the hidden easter egg you missed on the truck. There is a hidden 'V' in both of the side decals that appear to contain only 8s. See if you can find them. I saw both when watching if you know where to look. Thanks a million for all your hard work doing these reviews!
Doug. You pointed out all of those 8’s in the decals. But you missed the “V8” that was on the bed side (both sides). I saw it in frame when you were back there talking about the Red R decals. 6:30
I honestly prefer the TRX over the Raptor R just because they put some effort into a new body kit to differentiate the top model. This is very similar to the base Raptor and the only way to effectively show the difference is an obnoxiously large graphics package.
You missed the little "V8" Easter egg in the graphic. It's hard to spot. I love the new Raptor R, just not in that color. I'm a big fan of the lack of differentiating body features because I think it offers a "sleeper" function because a TRX owner on the road may mistake it for a regular Raptor. I know saying "a regular Raptor" is absurd in itself lol
On the 12mpg… Will cost you only $175/mo more than a truck getting double that mileage 24mpg* (to use an extreme comparison). The buyer should be much more concerned with the $1,000+ per month in depreciation in first few years. But Doug is probably correct some buyers will shy away because gas price is overhyped in cost of ownership. *assuming 12k miles/yr, $4.2/gal
Everyone has a preference, but if I was spending that kind of money, I would go for the standard Raptor. It gets much better fuel economy, and still has the same off-road capability. It is not on the same level of performance, However the standard Raptors performance is already very impressive, and more the 95% of people utilize anyways. Most Raptor owners don’t tow often, or even go off road, which is kind of silly.
I feel like the 8's are a poke at the people who complained about the raptor not having a V8. You know, the people who were never gonna buy one anyway...
Thank you Doug, you just saved me $30k. I was debating the R and talking to my dealership about ordering but now i think I’d like to save the money and go with the “basic” Raptor (37 package). The power is nice, sound is unbelievable! But it’s not Porches GT3, so why have all that power if all you can do is go straight and be loud.
Raptor is very nimble for being a truck had the chance to throw it around a Baja style off-road circuit there isn’t anything out there stock that’ll keep up with it
Did you get one? I think the regular one is the right choice, especially with the on board generator option. The R is cool, but the lack of so many options they absolutely could put on it, on top of the price just makes it seem too over the top without any benefit other than it being fast.
"This isn't like a hellcat" at 25:10 Lol yes it is. Insane power in a vehicle that should not have it, with tires (and in the hellcat's case, brakes) that should not be handling the power. It is exactly a hellcat, Doug
It's a great idea to spend that much money on a pickup to impress or "one up" someone at a stoplight that you will never be introduced to. But hey, you felt cool for about 3.5 seconds. And of course you can get to work or to the store a lot quicker. It will pay dividends in the end.
@@rmp5s ha. I don't have anything that fast. Got an old Porsche and a lightly tuned jeep. Happy with what I got. It amazes me to see trucks move that fast. We even got Escalades moving to 60 in the 4 second range
@UCvtpKwP-elqzH-nTog6BK0A it is. My Porsche barely keeps up with mustangs running pump gas. It's more off a show car now. Bought it when I was 18 2 years ago. My jeep could keep up with it maybe to 90 mph
You don't tune a pulley for low-end torque. You either change the pulley ratios and the blower spins faster or it spins slower, which either increases or decreases the amount of air pushed into the engine (AKA, increases or decreases boost). There's no way to tell that air to only increase torque figures. It's very much more likely that the camshafts have different lift and duration.
If this was priced closer to the TRX, it would be a better truck for the price. But paying 25-30k more for 2 less hp and 200 less pounds isn't ideal Also, this is 1k more then a F-450 Limited, which is just ridiculous
I know - I wanted one ... I fell in love with this truck, it's outrageous suspension, its styling, the interior, the slightly better towing and mileage, but then I was like _"What?! The TRX has 2 HP more?! What a fvking piece of sh!t this thing is!"_ Because when I buy a truck, If I can't wag my dick 2HP more than the other guy, on the inside I'll die feeling like the little boy I really am. But seriously the price is outrageous but 2HP doesn't matter in any sane person's world.
I agree with your comments Doug about the fuel economy. It’s just too low for most, and that will sway people to the less powerful Raptor. I own a business, and while I can afford a premium vehicle, I’m still fuel conscious since I am driving at least a few thousand miles a month. On top of that, a lot of these vehicles require premium fuel. In fact, I recently purchased a car that can get up to 39 MPG and to be honest, I am enjoying the low running costs and I’m using our larger less fuel efficient vehicles less.
lol. My dad has a 1990 454 ss truck. He was saying it got about 11 mpg on the hwy. I know gas was cheaper in the 90s, but I can't imagine how much he spent on gas on the 4,000+ mile journey he took down to Mexico and back when he got married. That's one of the reasons he's had it stored in the garage for just over 18 years.
@@JJFlores197 I'd love to have one of those someday. I think it would be a cool garage to have that along with a Syclone, a duo of big displacement vs boosted GM trucks
If you want to spend an extra $25k for a Ford Supertruck, over a Ram Supertruck, Ford has your ride If I were getting a supertruck, I would definitely get the TRX because if its more muscular appearance, more upscale interior, and superior price/value. Ford is after Ford loyalists, who will pay a premium to stay in brand. They aren't wrong for charging this, as there are so many Ford truck buyers out there
My 1989 Chevy 4x4 pickup is smaller, doesn't even have power windows but also has a V8 with about 1/3 the horsepower of this Raptor. It also only gets about 12 miles per gallon and is not nearly as much fun to drive as this truck looks. On the other hand it costs nearly nothing to own and maintain.
@@jeremybarcelo6486 GM? OK. They have a 6.2 supercharged V8 from the Escalade V that they can put in the Silverado...but it still has less power than this.
I say order as you will get what you want for the ‘best’ price that way. Note that many of the 2023 units are coming with lots of ‘deletes’.. like tailgate ‘badge’, heated steering wheel, perimeter alarm..
@@Captain-Awesome FWIW, I have owned probably 30+ vehicles and it’s the most badass one I’ve every owned.. and the build quality is as high as recent Toyota and Lexus that I have owned.

@@1mansarmy Well, that explains a lot. El Paso, Texas is a poor city, yet every damn vehicle is a Raptor, especially new ones. Doesn't make sense, as most of the drivers are Latino dudes below 40. Often hear about "high payments"...
Plenty of stupid people out there 😂
@@nwezetx1 As a fellow El Paso resident, I agree.
So you buy an $80,000 performance truck but need to save money on gas? It's 2008 all over again.
When you view vehicle ownership in those terms, 2X fuel costs make it dramatically more expensive to own, because you’re not recovering any of that money.

its christmas time. meaning the doug videos are gonna have some real bangers. lets gooooooooo
I always wonder why so many Americans buy a huge Pickup but then only use it to go shopping or drive anywhere
Prost & Cheers from the Bavarian Alps
$110k before dealer markups is insane imo
For about the same price there is the F-150 Shelby pickup (limited to 500 / year) which supercharged version of the car-tuned 5.05L Coyote (instead of the 5.2L) makes 770hp. The ~ U$110K MSRP is for that supercharged version.

@@hondafrk nope the TRX looks absolutely massive on the road, the wide body fenders and hood bulges are way more noticeable than the Raptor R

Doug, awesome review! I watched all the way through and read far down the comment section and found no references to the hidden easter egg you missed on the truck. I honestly prefer the TRX over the Raptor R just because they put some effort into a new body kit to differentiate the top model. This is very similar to the base Raptor and the only way to effectively show the difference is an obnoxiously large graphics package.
Agreed
Yeah Im going to buy the TRX. Looks better in my opinion, especially the much more dramatic flared fenders.
On the 12mpg… Will cost you only $175/mo more than a truck getting double that mileage 24mpg* (to use an extreme comparison).
Cant take a prsche gt3 to tear up sand dunes though!!

Did you get one? I think the regular one is the right choice, especially with the on board generator option. The R is cool, but the lack of so many options they absolutely could put on it, on top of the price just makes it seem too over the top without any benefit other than it being fast.
My 2005 ram 5.7 V8 gets the same MPG, but with half the power 😂
Nice Ford Rapto (as colorblinds would read)
"This isn't like a hellcat" at 25:10

It's a great idea to spend that much money on a pickup to impress or "one up" someone at a stoplight that you will never be introduced to. But hey, you felt cool for about 3.5 seconds. And of course you can get to work or to the store a lot quicker. It will pay dividends in the end.

@@floof4444 Sounds like you're doing alright for a 20 year old. Keep rockin, my friend!
So besides a new powertrain and a couple suspension bits, nothing new to test. Pretty smart. Ford should make a killing on this Raptor R
But paying 25-30k more for 2 less hp and 200 less pounds isn't ideal
Also, this is 1k more then a F-450 Limited, which is just ridiculous
Due to the new EPA enforcement Ford has locked all of the ECU's to stop customers from doing custom ECU tuning.

It’s cool to see that out of the 15 vehicles shown on your list, 5 Raptors are occupying one of the top 11 spots. 😊 With one being a Bronco. Yes! 😆
Reality tends to do that
That mpg is crazy, I thought my C4 Vette gulped gas a lot. This makes my 14 city mpg seem like an economy car.
My bone stock 16 Tundra gets around 11-12MPG. The Raptor making 2.3x the HP for about 1MPG less is crushing it.
10PG to 15 is fine and was good for any truck/SUV 2 dacades ago.

If I were getting a supertruck, I would definitely get the TRX because if its more muscular appearance, more upscale interior, and superior price/value.
