- What happens when Prodrive, the British racecar designer and mastermind of three Subaru World Rally Championship titles decides to build the ultimate road-going Impreza rally car? Well, we’ve been for a poke around the company’s workshops to have a look at the answer to that very question: the new Prodrive P25. It’s part restomod, part Impreza 22B homage, and all of Prodrive’s go-fast know-how in one big-winged package. The specification is sensational: over 400bhp, 0-62mph in under 3.5sec, but there’s one number that dwarfs all of that: the price. 100% agreed. 99.999999% of people would think you went crazy, if you explain you spent 0.5M on a Subaru. Nobody would question spending same on Lancia Delta Integrale

Prodrive know what they’re doing but this car somewhat doesn’t make sense… They want a rally car for the road but at that price they will end up garage queens… And for more than Lambo or Ferrari money it does not have.that status amongst common people who haven’t got a clue

For $665k I expect much more effort, like a carbon chassis, a better interior, improved lighting, and a better 0-60 time than a $45k Golf R. This is just a standard hot Subie with a big price tag.
Youll struggle to beat a DSG Golf R 0-60 in a car with a manual gearbox.

A 22b with 40k km sold for more than $300k last year on bring a trailer. But I agree, more could have been done with that budget and still make a good profit.

Me and a mate were having a discussion about these the other day, I know it couldn't happen due to safety and emissions rules but it would be amazing if say Subaru and Mitsubishi built a batch of new "old" Imprezas and Lancers with 2.0 ltr turbos, manual boxes but everything else basic, no A/C no fancy seats etc and sold them cheap, they'd sell loads.
It's possible, but only if they bought registered cars to re-do them. Emissions and safety rules are enforced mostly by build year, so technically the cars would still be old enough to pass those rules.
They would sell like hotcakes. Your right, not entertainment system in the dash, no gps, no electric windows and mirrors- just lightweight, basic fun

The Subaru Brighton is already like thta just need to do a swap, no power windows, no traction or stability control, but it does have ac and radio but nothing else just car

I've thought about it extensively and would have to agree, gold mags really make the difference against the blue, so distinctly Sabaru
It's not a 22b "restomod" it's a brand new WRC Subaru, basically put on your livery time travel back to the 90s and race beside McRae
And remember 22b wasn't a homologation car. 22b was made to look like the wrc car to commemorate their success at wrc

it's an auto because anyone with the money to buy this will drive it once and then park it in their climate controlled facility. they dont want to manually change gears.

I'm getting the feeling that for 150k plus a clean chassis a dedicated Subie tuning shop could get you about 90 percent there with what's out there on the market today. I'm sure the fit and finish is amazing on this car and prob the best built Subie for the street. For turn key and Prodrive attached to this vehicle a premium is justified.
Agreed. This is ground up built too, every redesigned. People are scoffing at the price as if they could even afford it at £100k. For 25 units I think they could have doubled the price and still sold out. Stops the instant resellers too that are looking a quick buck. Happens even with larger production sports cars, look at Porsches, Corvettes, Ford GTs when they get a new model, resellers instantly add more and sell on.
I would argue that with 150k you could even surpass this Prodrive car on all fronts. Total rip off.
The fit and finish of the car is absolutely unacceptable for the price. I hope it's just the prototype and the customer cars are better. But sagging doors, shit panelgaps, rear bench that doesn't fit properly and other interior trim pieces not fitting is just not done when asking this type of money.

For that Money the chassis, every single panel and wheels have to be carbon fiber like the ruf Porsche, swap a billet aluminum 6 cylinder engine and double or triple the horse power, and a Singer style interior

The detail and expertise and pedigree that went into the development of this car is truly something unique. You can’t compare to Singer, or Alfaholics, this car is entirely different and is well worth the price tag for something this rare (Subaru-wise) Shame we’ll never see the anti lag or boost functions being used. I hope whoever owns these cars, actually thrashes them around and unlocks their potential. Incredible car.

Growing up there was a lady who use to cut mine and my friends hair her name was Jenny and she had one of these cars. It wasn’t a pro drive model tho but it was a 22b. I always remember looking at it and wanting it so bad. Her Boyfreind explained to me how rare and special the car was and even let me sit in it and rev it outside the barber shop. Years later her own son petrol bombed it and it got written off. Shes passed way now but this car always has reminded me of her. I’m 33 now and this was when I was in my early to mid teens. Man time goes fast.

As with the Redux/Retropower E30 M3, I can appreciate the expertise that's gone into building it, but half a million is astronomical. Double the price of a 700hp Porsche 911 GT2 RS? Nah. You'd have to be one hell of a fan of the Impreza to part with that kind of money.
And that’s exactly who this car is for. The mega fans who know the deal with this car and the people who built it.
Wish they'd updated the lights front and rear, just a little, with some clear glass elements or something more expensive looking to make it identifiable as the P25 from a bit of a distance. Always loved this model Impreza 🤌

It needs the gold wheels, needs a manual box or at least a double paddle sequential instead of the single(crazy idea) and even if I had the money I would prefer to wait until a real 22B became available so I could buy it 200 grand cheaper than that thing. Oh it also needs blue bucket seats its a really cool car an all but just not half a million quid cool .

Wish you would have mentioned the higher cut fenders, mimicking the WRC car, rather than the smaller fender cutouts of the 22B. For me, it was the one design detail I was really hoping for, and I'm glad they did it!

Pro Drive trying to match original 22B price at the market.. so with that I think most prospective buyers will rarely use this on road and more as an investment.
Great car though and those 19' gun metal wheels I prefer over a gold one.
Also don't mind the no manual gearshift but just pull-push one paddle, left and right paddle shift has more natural feel.
You could build this car 4 times over for that kind of money. People have been popping sequential gearboxes in subies for years now.
If u think about how a mint stock 22b has sold for over 300k. The price is somewhat justified. 😓
I understand its built by prodrive, its got carbon body work etc etc. Despite the astronomical cost, its still a compromise. Doesn't seem that it would do anything better than a modded STI. When you buy a singer Porsche, I get it, youre paying for insane attention to detail but I just dont see the nearly 700k USD in this car. Prodrive is laughing all the way to the bank!

For everyone complaining about the price, understand that you’re paying for the rarity, not the power figures. This is what happens to collectibles.

The 22B is a rarity and a collectable. Not his remake.
Not to mention the cost of R&D needed to make sure it will work like a new car unlike some of those self build project under 100k.

@@lwenbmw4152 What R&D? There's nothing on this car that Prodrive haven't used before, it's all proven technology. This is just a money grab by Prodrive, the only research they will have done is to ensure there are buyers willing to pay that kind of money, hence they are all pre sold

@@kalasend I think the margin Prodrive has on these cars are much lower than anyone thinks. Just because something looks simple doesnt mean it didnt take engineers 100h to get to a design freeze of that part. And an engineer is probably £70/h, now you have 2D drawings and a 3D model of a part and its costed £7000 before youve even sourced the raw material, never mind produced it and tested it. Most of the cost of this project would be engineering man hours. And that is how a real engineering company works, and what sets it apart from Joe´s Tunershop. Now if I am a millionare I know which car I want to spend money on.

Prodrive wont do things that doesnt make sense just because it looks cool. At this power level there are better places to spend money which is what they have done. It is expensive enough already.
@@bingoberra18 At this price point everything that can be done should be done. Half a million for Subaru?! That doesn't make sense at all. Billet not only makes it stronger, but also lighter. And the weight saving with a carbon exterior is probably 100kg. Driveshafts should be carbon too. Wheels should be custom. Suspension should be Exe-Tc, Öhlins TTX, JRZ or the like. And a manual! If your really concerned about about loosing a few tenths or even seconds while shifting then this car is not for you. There's plenty faster cars out there. Especially at this price.

just the shell ins't carbon, Bonnet, boot, front and rear quarters, roof, front & rear bumper and wing is all carbon fiber (painted)
@@jasonkillsformomy I´m not saying it is according to "my spec" either. But this price is the price that Prodrive, a motorsport company, needed to charge in order to build a run of 25 newly built cars with many special and custom parts, developed by actual professional engineers and putting it all together into an OEM kind of reliability and driveability way. I agree that any tuning company could build a sick impreza for 1/4 of this price. But those tuning companies do not work engineeringwise like Prodrive. I work in a OEM and I know what lengths a company goes to when it comes to testing and validation, compared to any tuning company who needs to keep the cost down in order to even have a business. There is no time for research and development in a shop like that, they just order, bolt on parts, and tune. If they need to fab something, it is not engineered and simulated, its just fabbed up and slapped on. If it breaks there is no spare parts. etc etc etc. This is Prodrive, its a whole other ballgame from a tuner car.
The issue with restomods is that there’s no real way to regulate the prices the modders charge. There’s no value here, at all. Not at that price. You’d probably have just as much fun in a GR Yaris.
The price is set by the buyers, if no one would buy it then prodrive would have to drop the price. Anyone can build that car for less than 100k but there are people out there with too much money willing to spend half a million in a 30 year old Subaru.

Thanks to income inequality reaching obscene levels during the pandemic, there are thousands of Americans who could write a check for this car without batting an eye. For perspective, these days lunch for two at a top New York restaurant will set you back a couple grand. If you can get a table.

ALMOST drooling. Prolly won't ever have the experience to drive one of these beautys but Putting it in gear/1st and just reving her and listening to here purrr a few times then letting her GOOOOOO. Pull me back in the seat and holding on and taming her raw power. Hearing that boxer engine just Brapppp... think Subbie is missing on that manual stimulation that we all love as rex/sti drivers. I don't want her to do it herself she needs a good hand to steer her in the right direction!

You could theoretically build it, but it wouldn't be as polished as this is. It's not just parts you're buying it's also R&D.

What nonsense, you could literally buy an original 22B for around half and have it completely refurbed. Or find a clean Hawkeye shell and have it built out by a top tier shop like say Vermont sportscar for wildly less money. Either is a substantially better option than this very confused and hilariously overpriced oddity.
If you're a true masochist Vermont sportscar sells off their former rally cars and you could have one of those street legalized with a custom interior! You'd have the experience of an actual rally car on the street right down to the ever present whine of straight cut gears in the rally dog box.

So are have Prodrive taken an existing chassis and built the new car over it or is it a brand new bespoke chassis? And the engine have they rebuilt an old engine or completely cast new engine blocks?

Back in 2000 l bought a nearly new Evo 6 from Warrender in Bolton. Before buying it I test drove both the Evo 6 and a Subaru 22B they had for sale for comparison. At that time they were both on sale for around £25k. For me the Subaru made a better noise but the Evo was a much more exciting and rewarding car to drive all round. Residual values weren’t of interest, it was just about how the car felt., and the Evo 6 won. 23 years later it’s amazing how much people are prepared to pay for this era of rally replicas. If you’re in the market, I guess the rarity of a 22B makes it stand out. But from my experience….save yourself a load of money …the Evo 6 is a better car.

Would’ve preferred that sequential to be more of an old school type. Where the old 6 speed shifter goes but it’s a sequential.
Not sure why everyone thinks this car is not a manual.
If you havnt got it in Launch Control it will stay in First gear (after you've manually selected it) until you manually select Second or Neutral.

anyways, the sequential gearbox is a nice touch, if I were to build my own 22B replica I would have done this as well

in my opinion prodrive as much as i love and respect them,took a rare type R/p1 and turned it into something i'd never want to buy and if i did i'd have to replace most of the things

One of the original GC8 22B is currently for sale in Germany or the Netherlands (can't remember where exactly) for 340.000,-+ Euro.^^
Thinking back 10 to 15 years even a 22B you could find for around 40 -50k € (like f.ex. R34 GT-Rs ect.) for sale in Japan. The rise in prices sometimes comes crasy to me but for those
small series build types in special becomeing even more rare (because of you know... crashes, types of 'ricey tuning' of some kind and so on xD) by time, it somehow makes sence... :P
I drove a couple of these Impreza in the mountains of Colorado growing up as an adolescent. Possibly the most predictable and tossable car ever made… friends used to go on rides with me just for the thrill of driving sideways, flat out, on the dirt roads around Breckenridge. The car was a celebrity around town. This was back before pikes peak was paved, when companies still made cool vehicles for a purpose other than generating profits (before the AI accounting takeover), you know back when people still did wild things for the analog joys of living the human experience. Geez now I’m old, depressed, and rambling, thanks a lot Subaru.
The GR Yaris also disconnects the diff when you pull the hand brake. Not a novelty....

6:55 What the hell are you talking about?! Subaru hasn't forgotten its rally heritage. They are very active in the U.S., because there, the Impreza platform is still allowed to compete in rally. Heck, VSC and Subaru returned back to use Rally blue as their livery colors for the team.

I love the shape of that subaro, but you can get nearly the same performance in a GR Yaris when putting 20.000€ in it. An then you got the pleasure of of a manual gearbox on top ;)
