I think people don’t realize how Beth with all of her faults has seen how corrupt he is. She is broken as much as anyone, but she takes ownership of what she does. It is not only that he took the decision from her, it is that he doesn’t feel remorse. He justifies everything he does in his mind. Even the murder he committed. He takes his decisions based on his fear of being rejected or because of status. She knows what being ruled by fear brings, so she conquered herself. She prefers to face life and foes wildlessly rather than be ruled by sin. He is sin personified. He is the Abel spirit personified. Not all mistakes are justifiable. You repent and change and wear your mistake as a badge that will prevent you to become what you’ve seen you can become. He does all the time the opposite. He doesn’t deserve compassion. There is a point in your life that you need to decide who you are and stop blaming your parents on your issues.

@TylerHollywoodJB It is abit false to call it baby murder. It's entirely different to murder a real baby vs preventing someone from giving birth to one. The latter is not something that is alive yet. I know how touchy that subject is, but it's not the same thing. Not to mention Jamie didn't do it, it was the doctors and Beth would have to give consent. Him not admitting to the harm that was caused is probably his way of relieving himself of the guilt. The same guilt that wouldn't change anything if he carried it around on his sleeve.

I know its a show but honestly as a teenager i don't think i would know what sterilizing means. I also wonder if she had the baby if that wouldn't have ruined Rip and Johns relationship. I mean your only daughter gets knocked up by a dude that has a troubled past and your "famous" so they entire world is gonna know.
I just try and remember its a show and not to read into it much but ive always felt bad for Jamie. John never loved him like his other siblings and thats even before he knew what he did to Beth. Jamie said he didn't even want to be a lawyer but John forced him into it and almost seems like john hates him for being a lawyer even tho he made him into a lawyer? Good show but on a side note i don't understand why people hate adoptions so much. I knpw its not the same but i can't see not being able to have kids and say im not gonna adopt a child. You want a child and a child wants a stable home and family. Way to many kids grow up without ever being adopted which is extremely sad. Also typically the people who would make the best parents are usually the ones that cant have children for whatever reason and the people who are monsters typically can have 1,000 kids

The "It was all for nothing...everything I've done, it's all for nothing" is the scene in the entire show that made me, as a grown man, cry the most because I can't help but imagine seeing my own father saying that about me and my siblings if we'd done something so horrible to the family legacy. To accomplish so much but it's not the thing YOU WANT to accomplish, that despair-level disappointment while people on the outside basically worship him for his perceived success. It's like a Shakespearean tragedy, all the money and resources in the world, but they may as well be useless because the one free thing you want money can't buy.
I really hope to never find myself in any of these situations.

Unfortunately, on the reservations, we are mostly on our own. The US government doesn’t help even though treaties call for them to. In one year there were 5,712 reported cases of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls. The U.S. Department of Justice missing persons database only documented 116 of those. They don’t take us seriously, and once enough of us die out, they can posses the reservation land also. That’s the whole point of blood quantum and minimum requirements to be an enrolled tribal member also. May 5th is MMIW day, because it is the birthday of Hannah Harris who was murdered on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Her family tried to report her missing, authorities told them “she’s probably drunk, she’ll be home when she sleeps it off” (yes, they used the stereotypical drunk native trope) her family investigated themselves, found the people who last saw her and turned them into authorities. They were questioned and let go. In the end, it was found out that they were the ones who murdered her. The indigenous community is close-knit, yes because of our culture, but also because we understand only we will take care of each other.

Beth wanted the procedure so she has to be accountable for that. And imo she is. She has been self destructive, kept herself away from Rip, then she told him she couldn’t give him a family & she regrets that. She discussed how the decision she made out of fear destroyed her.
But she did not decide to be sterilized. Jamie decided. He stole her chance to have children from. And it wasn’t bc he didn’t understand…he’s very smart. He did it bc of pride. Jamie wanted to protect the Dutton name more than he wanted to protect his sisters bodily autonomy. He didn’t want anyone to know she got pregnant which is why he took her to the reservation and refused to go elsewhere even when he was warned what would happen to Beth.
That’s also why Beth is right that John will never truly respect him. John cares about legacy. He would’ve put Beth and her chance to have children in the future ahead of whatever gossip would’ve come from it getting out she was pregnant.

Honestly, the more I sit with this show the more I start to agree with Beth's description of Jamie. Jamie is a very sympathetic character, and Beth also goes way too far in her hostility towards him (bc...y'know, it's Beth), but she's totally correct: Jamie's first instinct will always be to protect himself. When I look back on what Jamie did to Beth, it becomes super obvious to me that yeah, actually, he did that to protect HIMSELF, not Beth. He could've taken Beth to another clinic and then protect/defend her once John found out, but that would implicate him. John would KNOW he was involved, and we all know he can't risk losing John's approval. I'm sure he genuinely wanted to help his sister, but I think he also (maybe without realizing it himself) did so in such a way where it would cause HIM the least amount of personal trouble (at the time). Why else would he not tell her about the sterilization? Because telling her might make her wanna go to another clinic, one more likely to leak the news to John, and I think on a subconscious level Jamie already wanted to ensure that wasn't an option she knew to take.

  • @VillainHoor

This show has so many plot holes and disappeared characters. You just have to ignore all that and go with it. In regard to the Beth/Jamie conflict. In the context of this show, I understand why she is angry, 20 years later. It’s horrifying. Did Jamie FULLY understand, as a 19 year old male, what sterilization meant? So far, we don’t know. The way she went to him and asked him to help her, makes me think that they had a normal brother sister relationship, up to that point. They have given us no reason to think he did this maliciously, so I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt for now. Regarding the Indian Health Services storyline, I know that was the policy back then. Sterilization after abortion. But I don’t know how realistic it is that Beth was sterilized, with a hysterectomy in a clinic the same day. From what I understand, a hysterectomy is an inpatient procedure where you have to stay a few days and you are completely anesthetized during the surgery. That was my best friend’s experience, anyway. Certainly not in a clinic, same day. If she thought she was just getting an abortion, a procedure you walk in and out of the same day without being fully unconscious, you cannot tell me that Beth Dutton would not have made a loud scene about what was happening to her. This is just one of the things I feel like I have to turn off my brain for to enjoy this show.

Had Beth just gone to her father about being pregnant she wouldn't have to blame Jamie for anything. Same goes for her telling Jamie that Rip is the father. On the off chance the he got told by her that it was Rip's baby, he probably wouldn't have gone to the clinic, but John himself. I like Beth better than Monica, but literally on a continuous venture this all the Beth and Jamie storyline's driving force has to offer. None of them should have made the decision to act. Talking to John could have been the safest thing for Beth and Jamie.

Beth and rip adopt a boy so in season 5 I think Tate kinda has a cousin/ friend he almost had a brother till Monica miscarried also not sure if they showed it yet but Jamie is adopted so not sure if his kid would be considered family but technically would be tates cousin, Beth and rip get married even tho rip deserves much better than her, John almost dies gets shot to shit all the ranch hands get branded after they kill wade

whatever you dont blame Beth for being a nasty and hateful person. worst character ever. SO saying Jamie "should have known what sterilization meant,,,but lets forget about Beth being trashy and doing whatever she wants with no worries of any accountability....

I don't blame Jamie for Beth, she was the one that was irresponsible. She screwed up. Not Jamie. If didn't try to hide it, she could've unalived the baby and gone on to do it over and over again. It's probably best she could only do it once

Beth can still have a baby with a surrogate. They took her uterus, not her ovaries. I have no idea if that will play out later, but they leave ovaries to maintain hormones.
