If the Avon aftershave works, it scares me what it would do to my face. Thanks for the laugh. Brought back memories of a great aunt who used to give Avon aftershave for every holiday 😂
I was hoping that you would cut off the mange plastic handles and use your mini lathe with cherry wood and make a new handle with a brass ferrule. Thanks for trying, still very interesting and worth a try.
So far there is no known long term cure for mange. When those handles were cast they were made defectively. So what's going on is irreversible. Because not every handle gets mangy. Only some suffer from the affliction.
I collect Xcelite tools, and what I always end up doing is washing them in the sink with regular bar soap after scraping off the majority of the white crust. I also keep them in a sunny window, which seems to keep the mange away. Using the tools also seems to keep it away. I just accept the slight (but hardly noticeable) smell as part of the enjoyment of my tools.
I believe the cause of the mange was an improper mix of the chemicals used in the manufacturing of the handles. Like epoxy if you add too much resin the mix won’t dry as fast or possibly be tacky- Western Forge was notorious for shoddy workmanship and many of their products would be considered factory seconds in any other company. 😂. Great stuff as always! 😃👍
I had a few snap on screwdrivers that the handles disintegrated . They replaced them. I also had a few Bass pro rods that developed mange. I think I cleaned them with alcohol . I finally thinned them from my rods. I hope one of your methods works. Great show thank You

Clear handled screwdrivers are made from cellulose acetate butyrate for their electrical insulator properties. The chalky white residue are plasticizers decomposing and the vomit smell is butyric acid off gassing. Options are : return for exchange if Craftsman or lifetime warranty brand , clean with chemicals, buff and coat with polyurethane to contain stink , cut off stinky handle and replace with new one or simply throw it away . There is no guarantee if cleaned and coated that it will not continue to decompose .
that lifetime warranty is subjective i had tools from a sears craftsman set and tried a warranty exchange at lowes they said it was sears craftsman and to try them sears closed tried craftsman online wanted a receipt from 1985... easier to shoplift a replacement
The sreering wheel in my 54 Studebaker did that, plus severe cracking. I repaired with epoxy and painted with a quality automotive primer and paint. After more than 10 years the interior of the car smells better but the cracking is starting to return.
Very interesting. The last one with the clear coat looks nice and shiny. As you said, only time will tell if the mange returns. I am happy we do not have smell-o-vision. LOL Dave.
That spray he used is not the most durable product available. With a better clear coat he may achieve better results? I'd recommend using Helmsman spar varnish. I've had excellent results using that on tools. It costs more but it's worth it. Helmsman is far more durable. It's tough stuff.
MD, Very appropriate video for Halloween. I appreciate all your efforts, both to conquer the mange and present a fun story to your viewers. Thanks so much for sharing this fun episode.
As best as we can tell mange is due to a faulty chemical process when the handle was manufactured. Once a handle goes mangy that's it. You can only manage it then. There is no cure. It's actually a manufacturing defect. The permanent solution is to get rid of the handle. Which a lot of people do. They just throw the tools away.
@@357magdad I know you're trying and you've got hopes but I'm not sure if there is a solution. Handles that get mangy are simply defective. Because it doesn't happen to all of them. I have handles that are decades old and they've never gotten the pox. Then there's the troublesome ones.

Thanks for this video; I am fascinated by these stinking, corroded handles! Have you considered this technique, which I have seen used to restore yellowed plastic parts? The plastic is immersed in hydrogen peroxide in a clear basin, strips of LED lights are taped around the outside of the basin, and the plastic sits overnight in the illuminated peroxide. The plastic comes out de-yellowed and looks factory-fresh
If you leave tools out in the fresh air that seems to impede the growth of mange. It isn't a cure but it slows it. Mange likes it dark, hot and humid. It's an organism. It's some kind of bacterial feeding on the cellulose. A couple have been identified so far. I've heard it doesn't exist on the continent of Australia. At least not yet. We've got it bad in America though.
I would try a UVC light . They say it could be mold that is eating it. Next summer I will look for one in a garage sale and clean it and then treat it with UVC light for an hour. I have a box made and it works on the smell of old books . The screwdrivers I have never had a bad case of decomposing handles. Any screw drivers I cleaned up hang on the wall. I don't think there is any tool challenge Magdad won't tackle. Those screwdriver handles look so good after the cleanup that they deserve to stay that way. My average guy- type of solution would be to clean the handles up, then seal them with clear epoxy or clear plastic spray to tame the mange.
We'll see after next mange season. Mange likes heat and humidity. So it's most active in the summer. But apparently you can cook it with too much heat. It is a living bacteria.
That's a good bit of info. it looks to me like smart people on this channel have diagnosed why this mange occurs. Maybe there is an organic chemist or other pro that can offer a hopefully permanent cure.@@1pcfred
I've seen other videos working this problem also. It is claimed that bacteria is involved in the decomposition. Maybe, after ammonia cleanup, exposing the handles to UV-C will "sterilize" them (for a while)?
That's how I clean mange. I use a cleaner and steel wool. The cleaner seems to kill the stuff and the steel wool gets it off. But then it always comes back. As best as anyone knows the plastic wasn't catalyzed correctly when it was made. So handles that get mangy are just susceptible to the bacteria that causes it. Because it doesn't happen to all the handles.
Heat and moisture grows mange. It's a bacteria. It's literally eating the handles. It's even regional. Mange is not all over the globe. It's an infection.
Did they make these "screw-jabbers" out of anything other than CAB ??? I have a set of these "Crapsman" drivers that is quite old, and none of them have the mange. Does my local environment help me avoid the dreaded mange ??? Great video !!! Well written !!!
YES! The video I have been waiting for, … ever since your last video, I have been trying to cure the smell. I tried 12% hydrogen peroxide for weeks and I don’t think it worked. I can’t wait to see if you found a cure for the smell!
4:40 this is exactly where I was going next! I was going to throw it into a toaster oven, but a heat gun sounds like it might be quicker? I think a toaster oven might be more accurate in trying to straddle the temperature range of being above 100C but below 120C where CAB melts
there is only one thing that really helps, you have to burn it and make a handle out of new sanctified wood, or you can just weld a piece of pipe to it :-)
I reckon a man of your talents should ditch the decomposing handles and make a wooden one or, even better, a resin one. The latter idea, you could cast the shaft into the handle and when dry, use the shaft to true up and polish the handle in your little lathe. Regardless of what you do, thanks for your tireless work entertaining us with your interesting and sometimes humorous videos.
I like your humor, but your fixes will not get rid of it. The problem is that the degradation of cellulose acetate and its related plastics is auto catalytic. The smell is from butyric acid. Any acetic or butyric acid left behind will cause more mange. Coating it will only seal it in. I would suggest the ammonia followed by heat in cycles until the smell goes away.
Yeah but there's actually a bacteria that's eating the plastic. There's no known cure. It isn't all handles either. Some just weren't catalyzed right when they were made. They're defective. So far no one's discovered how to fix that. It may not even be possible. There's a lot of info on the net about it. Some legitimate science has been done.
Nice video. Do you need more screwdrivers that have the mange? For scientific research. I’m sure a simple request and you would have viewers from all over sending them to you. Just kidding.
The heat method seems to be a variation of this th-cam.com/video/TBj8Q-HyicA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=iJzakD1ObK6Lmi6D . Maybe you need to go full tilt, mechanical, heat, chemical, cologne, wax and clear coat?

Did they make these "screw-jabbers" out of anything other than CAB ??? I have a set of these "Crapsman" drivers that is quite old, and none of them have the mange. Does my local environment help me avoid the dreaded mange ??? Great video !!! Well written !!!
Viewers in dry climates like Arizona have commented that they are mange free.
@@357magdad I'm in Memphis....not exactly dry.....???
Maybe a coating of urethane would help block the smell.
I'm hoping my clear coat work!
Soak those screwdrivers in Simple Green overnight. Wash them the next morning and they will be like new and no smell.
That has not been my experience, but I'm glad it worked for you John!
Oh no! Nothing worked! Ahhhh, this is a very scary Halloween!
Try some cologne!
there is only one thing that really helps, you have to burn it and make a handle out of new sanctified wood, or you can just weld a piece of pipe to it :-)
I like wood handle tools.
It's one of those awful smells you hate but you also keep sniffing because it's oddly compelling
It compelled me to find a cure!
Vomit and aftershave. Sounds like when I was a drinker in my twenties.
That's funny Ben! Happy Halloween!
Try a thin coat of epoxy resin.
I'm waiting to see if my cheap clear coat works first.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Happy Halloween!
Use Naphtha (lighter fluid) and the crud wipes right off.
Thanks!
If it's an acid, a base should neutralize the smell and decomposition.
🤔
@@alpine1600s the acid is a symptom and not the cause.
@@1pcfred It is both. Acid is a product of the decomposition, but it also causes further decomposition.
I'm surprised you didn't use Axe deodorant Spay after that cleaning. 🤪
I was gonna buy some cologne, but I was shocked at the price!
I am sorry but the mange would return but slowly. Best of luck!
Thanks for watching!
Always confused between Ammonia and Bleach. When to use one vs the other.
I tried both:

ha and never at same time..
instead of Avon how about old spice that would remind some of us of the guys that left us the tools
"If your grandfather hadn't worn it, you wouldn't exist."
Try Pepsi, coke, or 7 up?
What about Dr Pepper?
Nice video. Do you need more screwdrivers that have the mange? For scientific research. I’m sure a simple request and you would have viewers from all over sending them to you. Just kidding.
I see them at the sales all the time!
Is it really worth the time and effort. Remove the handle and reuse the shank.
There are vintage tools infected with the mange that I want to be able to restore, not destroy.
Uncle Bob Approved!
Uncle Bob doesn’t have a cure, but he does have a nice clean screwdriver he is bringing to you soon.
Thanks! Happy Halloween!
The heat method seems to be a variation of this th-cam.com/video/TBj8Q-HyicA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=iJzakD1ObK6Lmi6D . Maybe you need to go full tilt, mechanical, heat, chemical, cologne, wax and clear coat?
Good idea David!
Absolute answer is........break or melt off the plastic crap and replace with a wood handle...one cherry, one black walnut, and one apple...lets use that turney machine thing...🖖
I've got a tiny lathe project coming up in November - stay tuned!
