Amazing, isn't it? That tool is likely over 100 years old and all the pieces are there. Great job Magdad! I'm glad you left it original and not too shiny. -Tom
@@beerdrinker6452 That's something I always think about in these videos too. He picked this up at a yard sale and I was wondering if this was purchased new and was in the family all these years.
I love this tool holder. Very good find. Well done on the cleanup and especially the striker cap. This would have been a very useful addition to the late 19th century toolbox, and still useful today. Glad this will be preserved for many years. Dave.
Really sweet job of refurbishing the tool, nice to see you bring it back to as close to original finish as you could and a great job of fabricating the strike cap for the tool. Thanks for sharing the tool with us, enjoyed watching.
Very nice old tool. I have run across tool sets from the turn of the previous century. A lot of them have reamers in them. What people were reaming, I don't know. But, you see that tool quite frequently. Nice job on your set.
If only old Tools could talk what a history lesson that would be For a Tool that is over a 100yrs old and outstanding condition with all the bits i would say you hit a homerun Mr Magdad outstanding restoration The millers Falls # 5 looks brand new .. Hey take care enjoy your Sunday looking forward to Wednesday Video
At first I thought this great old tool would be a candidate for the official Magdad Bombay Plum refinishing stain for the wooden handle. I'm glad you kept the original appearance. The wood is attractive, and isn't cracked or broken. I'm amazed that this old tool is so complete -- all it's original pieces. What are the chances of that after 100 years? It was a public service to save this complete, rare American tool. Thanks.
Thanks Magdad, that was a great find, It looked pretty poor from the outside, but cleaned up very nicely and having all the bits in good condition is a real bonus !
Nice job on that. Finding one with all the original bits was amazing. I have several of the similar tools that I’ve restored. I like them, good old fashioned ingenuity. You gave me an idea. Adding a graver tool for engraving would be easy and should work well given that nice handle.
WOW, I LOVE that magdad ! You did a fantastic job on it and the striker cap is brilliant. To think it was all complete after all those years ! WELL DONE. Take care 🙂
That is beautifully done, great job. I picked a similar tool up at the flea market this last weekend, and I’m looking forward to cleaning it up as well. You’ve given me some ideas about how to go about it, especially with the nylon brush, cloth and mineral spirits. I think I only have five or six tools inside of it though. Thanks so much for sharing and hope you have a great week.
Hey !Bonjour Magdad, un grand merci à Madame d'avoir trouvé cet outil. La restauration est superbe pour un outil ayant plus de cent ans et qui plus est contient tout les accessoires. ❤❤
Whaaaat ???!!!! No Flitzing ???!!! Blasphemy !!! When I saw the recess for the missing cap, I was thinking that an old "era correct" coin, glued in there might have been cool. But I am impressed with your solution. Great job!
I always love a good Millers Falls tool. I actually only have one or two in my collection. I need to up that number. Great find. I wonder what projects someone back in the day would have used some of those inserts on?
Hi Magdad , Nice Find And Job. It Looks Great . Nice Job On Making A Bottoming Out Tap. I Also Have Made A Couple of Those. Great For Threading A Blind Hole. One Cool Tool. Pretty Rare I Imagine. Especially with Al The Pieces.
That is a beautiful tool holder, love Millers-Falls. Nice restoration and that is a nice assortment of tools that it comes with. Amazing that you have the whole collection of tools. Looks handy.
I've recently gotten one of those Millers falls multi tools, just like this one. Its so pristine you can even see some of the sticker on the handle, strangely though all it's bits are gone!
What a great find! That cleaned up nicely and the striker cap you made looks great. Maybe we'll get to see you use the gouge with your mini lathe one day.
Enjoyed seeing the making of the striker cap and what a great job you did on it too. I was expecting the Bombay Mahogany for the finish, but it came out really nice without it. That Miller Falls Tool Holder looks like new. Good, interesting video. Btw, I recently picked up a can of Minwax Bombay Mahogany Polyshades (They didn't have the BEHR) and I really like it. It has the stain and polyurethane in one step.
What did you use on the metal parts to prevent re-rusting. It came out looking awesome, I really love the old growth wood grain handles on old tools, you made this look amazing!
"pokey thing" = awl/icepick. Good combo tool for things like sewing, grommeting, breaking up materials (wood, ice, small stones). take a page out of Mark Novak's advice and invest in a carding wheel, too -- it'll help with fine detail cleanups like this. Might be worthwhile to see if the patents can be had at reasonable cost. Something like this would be excellent for bushcrafting/hiking/camping.
Impressive that you took that multi tool from grimy to gleaming. Definitely the hole making tools dominated that group of bits. That poor tool must have sat in the bottom of a tool box or somewhere where it was unused but collecting the detritus of years. turned out good and deceiving how big a tool it actually is when you show it in relation to your vise.
Finding a complete set is always a real treasure! 😃👍
I was lucky to find it!

Great Old Tool, the kind of thing I like seeing preserved. Really in very good condition considering how old it is.

Great restoration! I think it’s cool that your early multi-tool will last another century or more.

Simply amazing! It shows how tools last when they are taken care of! Is this the oldest tool in your collection?
Thanks Steve! I'm not sure how old it is. Millers Falls made them for a lot of years.
Awesome find! And a great job on the clean up/ restoration. Amazing it still has all the bits!

I think the idea of trying a rust remover like Evaporust instead of the wire wheel in order to avoid dulling the file is a good one. Going to try it.
Thanks Pat! I've had some limited success "sharpening" dull files by soaking them in vinegar for a week.

The chisel and gouge were definitely used - I had to sharpen them. The tip on the square awl was broken, so it saw some service too.
