Elephant Calves, Phabeni & Khanyisa Meet at the Orphanage Fence! Plus a Weigh-in!

- Phabeni has been making all kinds of new friends, from sheep to members of his own species. He has now met not only big bull, Jabulani but Khanyisa as well as Timisa and Pisa too! Phabeni is getting more and more comfortable with these meetings and lifts his trunk now and again to investigate the gentle giants before him.
It’s such a beautiful sight to see the elephants getting to know the new orphan, but there is a long road ahead, as he needs Phabeni to first pick up weight and grow stronger, as well as more secure in his new surroundings.
Back in the nursery, watch Phabeni have a weigh-in, followed by breakfast milk bottles. The little calf gained weight nicely in the first week, but then dropped 4kg of the 8kg he gained. Babies do usually lose weight in the first 10 days after birth though, so this is not unusual. Phabeni is now drinking his bottles much better, and we’re sure he will pick up weight for the next time on the scale.

You dont realise how big Khanyisa has gotten until you see her with Phabeni. Jabulani is looking as majestic as ever. He is a fine bull elephant. ❤️🐘

What a beautiful sight to see this morning it’s quite cold here but this with previous orphans showing the newcomer that soon he too will have a place with a family again,is enough to warm your heart. We have Jabu the gentle big brother Khanyisa Braveheart now a big sister and Phabeni Wildheart (Wildheart is defined as one who has gone through emotional struggles and deep loss but who remains firey and strong perfect for this little man)along with of course Timi Cupcake. Sweet boy needs all his rest to gain strength one day he’ll be an impressive bull just like his role models but with HERDS dedication and endless love no doubt he’ll get there one step at a time we love you so much little Prince 👑 💙🐘🤗🥺

Phabeni really has gained trust fast. He feels comfortable laying down and sleeping with Adine and carers and the other elephants. I think its wonderful.

The babies are so different, Khanyisa would follow a bottle anywhere, any time with anyone! Phabeni is doing very well so far, building trust.

Even after all this time, I still am awed by just how big Jabulani is, lol. Seeing him near little Phabeni makes him look even bigger. It's hard to believe Khanyisa has grown so much, and I am so proud of all the elphants and carers. ❤
since he was born in the wild it’s really amazing that he has acclimated to humans so fast. Just shows what love & kindness can do. ❤❤

Every loved baby gets watched while sleeping. This baby elephant is watched around the world. What a pleasure to see elephant baby sound asleep with so many friends around ready to love him up.

Awww so sweet, I bet the new one Phabeni has memories of its mother when he sees the other elephants I'm sure that's probably why he's not ready, can you imagine losing your mother at young age with no other family and lost. I really appreciate it very much if in everything you do H.E.R.D. and those who makes this possible. I'm worried, I know you do everything, but it isn't easy. Well, maybe it's to early to say. Kanisha was wounded and needed for that reason longer time to meet up with the other elephants. Phabeni seems to me more psychologically wounded. It would be great if he would react happily on the others, but he lacks strenght. I saw he hadn't gained weight, but has started to drink better, that's good news!! I pray he'll get soon over this hill, he's such a little sweety pie ❤

Oh to see Khanysia and Jubalani by baby boy was precious, but our pink princess seemed like her "trunk" was out of joint when she saw her human momma with a new baby. 😉😉

It was so cute when Khanyisa first held her bottle on her own. Hopefully that day will come for little Phabeni. He’s probably still remembering his mums milk. He is certainly looking more relaxed in his new home, taking a nap in the presence of his new Ellie friends.

Sweet meeting with more members of his new family!! I love how he just lays down when he's tired. I think this little guy is definitely going to "march to the beat of his own drum" Perhaps another Mambo in the making? 😮😂 Am I right in thinking Khanyisa's weight dipped in the very early days. As you say, it's absolutely normal so Im not concerned. So glad Adine is mega- experienced in rearing these fragile babies and is taking it "slow and steady". His life has completely changed but I think he's much more settled. Darling, reliable Jabu is helping enormously with his regular visits. He understands Phabeni's situation so well, having been through a traumatic time as a youngster. I feel very comfortable and happy with "FabPhab's" progress. Thank you all 🩵🐘🩵👍😊🙏🙏
I wonder, - and not to attribute human emotions- is it possible that the reason he is a bit shy with the other elephants and hides out in the reeds is because, at some level, he does believe he was abandoned by his mother and birth herd and actually did hide in the reeds when he was so little and all alone. The reeds are safe and comforting to him, they may have kept him alive.
That could take a while to get over.
when "weighing the baby elephant today" means, yah, gonna be doing it pretty much of the entire day. LOL Love to all the beautiful souls at HERD!
The birth weight of an African elephant is 90-120 kg.
If I remember correctly, Phabeni arrived at HERD on 23rd of November, approx. at 4 months old and 122 kg. We don't know what the dynamics of his development were between the two events.
Today, on 14th of December his weight is 126 kg.
Sum is: + 4 kg.
Not much, but more than nothing.

@@jamesfreeman2258 Yes, the milk formula could have been in the background, but there could also be many other reasons, for example: psychological trauma, grief over the mother, inadequate intestinal flora, etc.
But let's not forget the possibility of internal diseases and disorders that may be congenital or acquired while living alone (hematopoietic system, intestinal system, liver, heart, lungs, etc.)!
In time, the real reason will be revealed. Let's hope for the best!
Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya has extensive experience in raising orphaned baby elephants. You can read the story of each little orphan by name and the experiences of the caregivers and professionals. You can read about a lot of interesting things there!
Psychlogically he is in a much much better place. He will fill out. Remember at the beginning he would sometimes reject the milk. However he hasn't had the digestive issues Khanisa had. Meanwhile, we should contribute to the milk $!

Ngl, not surprised he’s not gained weight. I’ve been following for some time and at every video I shiver at seeing how skinny that boy is. I hope it’s just a matter of finding his stride and not something more serious. 💕
@pansepot1490 I recall from older videos that Adine said in the wild a mother elephants milk changes as the calf grows to fit it's needs. Each one is different. HERD has to constantly work on formula for each calf to make sure it's receiving all nutrition it needs, in proper amounts, on a schedule that works for THAT calf without causing any tummy or digestive issues. HUGE responsibility and they take it very seriously. Phabeni is in the correct place to receive the best medical, nutritional and loving care possible. It has only been, at most, 6 weeks so it will take some time to get everything working together. We subscribers are so invested in this group of elephants and we want to see results, but as the saying goes, "patience is a virtue"...HERD keeps us apprised of what's going on in a timely manner. Phabeni will master all of this in time. Just saw he is up to 131kg. Slow but steady.
It's so sweet big bull Jabu is the one who welcomes the orphans--now with an assist from my girls Timi and Khanyisa. Bull elephants don't get enough credit for protective and nurturing many of them are.

I was wondering if he was gaining. Sad to see he did not. I’m so glad HERD is trying different ways to get him the nutrition he needs. I wonder if he could learn gluttony from Khanyisa who never sees a milk bottle she doesn’t want to glug down.That girl loves to eat! 🍼

I wouldn't say he didn't gain any weight, for overall he did.
3 weeks ago, at arrival he was 122 kg and now he is 126 kg.
Not much but more than nothing.

@melissalarson2569 When Khanyisa first arrived with all her injuries, it was so difficult to get her bottles into her as it was so painful for her to drink. As time went on and she healed, things got better. As her trunk grew stronger and she figured out what she could do with it 😉, she became quite clever in feeding herself. Naturally there were a few times when she still liked being babied a little, and she'd manage to get someone to hold the bottle for her.😆 She can be such a dickins!💗
That little Meisiekind loves, loves loves to eat! Her focus is on food! The three munchkins will really get to know Phabeni when they are not munching! LOL Khanyisa was sort of timid in her reaction to Seuntjie, as she turned around, but that will change in time. The reaction I want to see is Tokwe and the females and how they react. Tokwe and Lundi I feel will set the tone. Overall, I feel that they are now comfortable knowing that the Orphanage is taking good care of their next charge!
Carer says "can't drink milk, Jabu". So glad the herd is being introduced slowly to the new baby.

Pinky is really chugging her bottle, Beni can learn how to take his milk by watching her. Although, Pinky didn't have anyone to mimic, it was all instinctual, boys are a bit slower than girls, he'll get there without a doubt ! 😎
Little by little, Phabeni will get used to al the visitings and making new friends. When the time is right. For now, he needs al his naps💤 🌾and all the bottles 🍼 to get stronger. He knows what he wants. They are all so precious. Thank you for sharing ❤🐘🐘🐘❤

Khanyisa is just growing like a weed. I can't get over how much she's grown over the last few months. It's astonishing to realize how tiny she once was compared to her size now. It will be truly awesome to see Phabeni in the months down the road and he grows and matures.

Of course a baby needs sleep to grow buy we also have seen sleep behavior like this when orphans get too stimulated with new experiences, and they tend to find a place they consider safe and comforting like the reeds for Phabeni. He may be trying to handle stimulation such as introductions to herd that is over whelping to him, and retreating into a nap gives him a way to calm down and process what he has already taken in.
I am concerned Phabeni looks dehydrated. It is stressful for him to have new change with all he's been through. Its stressful for him to keep meeting more elephants. Can they wait until he starts eating much better & gaining weight including strength before introducing more stress? No hurry.
I'm sure the people in charge of Phabeni know exactly what they are doing. Every elephant needs a herd. The sooner he knows he's with family, the better.
