  • I picked this bus up about 14 years ago from a girl that was a groupie for the band phish, she settled down and started a family so the bus just sat. I picked it up and have been gathering parts for it a long time, but its parking spot behind the garage is going to be used for other purposes, lets see if we can get the old girl up and running once more shall we.

thats not what im saying. mayby 2nd or 3rd gear and slowly let off the clutch if you want to slow down, not a complete stop

of course. im not saying that engine braking is an alternative for regular foot brakes.

Ted Bishop that's a shame in today's modern world. Also, if you tried to start a car that has fuel injectors, have a fire extinguisher handy since worn out or rusty injectors can catch the car on fire.

Hey Darren, I saw a another TH-camr loosen up a stuck wheel by placing a prybar under the lugnuts like you did. EXCEPT that he let the prybar touch the ground. Then he lowered the jack back down so that the prybar could put pressure on the drum and broke it loose WITHOUT any hassle. Maybe he got lucky, but he sure made it look easier. Hope this helps.

Oil spraying the body seams and cavities once or twice a year with Fluid Film or even chain saw bar and chain oil (stays tacky) would have saved this bus. It's sad how many people "love" their VWs and won't even craw under them once a year with a couple of cans of Fluid Film and stick the straw inside of the body cavities and prevent cancer rust with a little bit of oil spray.

LUKATHEDRIFTER 13 My former boss at the service station I worked at for 16 year's used to coat the undercarriages of his car's and truck's twice A year to stop rust. At first he used Phillips 66 MM non-detergent oil but later switched to LPS-3. It's A wax based metal preservative that is still available from amazon.
He had A 64' I.H. Scout plow truck and A 66' I. H. wrecker and A 65' Chevy pickup. When he retired he sold the wrecker to an auto part's yard that stopped the preservation measures and the body rusted off in about 10 years. The Scout and P.U. was bought by A coworker and he did the same routine as our boss did and the body's are as solid as the day they were made. It work's much better if you have A lift to work under but tall jack stand's can work also. Unfortunately for me, I tend to buy car's and truck's pre-infested with the rust worm's and salvage is long past!

seized brakes: I fired up my Trans Am this summer because I needed it to get it out of the way for some fence building. It fired right up on who knows how old a fuel. When it come time to slip it into gear you could tell it did not want to move and with a bit more throttle pressure there was a horrendous bang as the back brakes broke loose. I still had one brake caliper froze up in the applied position. I broke a C Clamp trying to press it together. hammered it off the rotor. swapped the seized caliper with one that came off a 13 year newer Caprice . and she was good to go.

I "found" (quess it was never lost to the owner) one of these buses lying in the forest near me, it is fully molded on the outside, bad rust everywhere, engine compartment was so badly rusted that the engine had fallen out.. I found out that it was driven to that spot in the end of the 90s. I dont think it is salvageable anymore :( Would be nice though to own one of these one day!

well letting it set for so long does more damage than keeping it running but keeping it running does create something else on my bus 737,000 miles on some of its parts. Rambus

Great vehicles ever. Still when you see either a Bettle, karmann ghia, buggy, Westfalia, they still turn heads.

If I were an after market vw parts supplier, I’d try and get one of the manufactures to make replacement rocker panels for both sides and front rear doors and quarter panels. Seems they all are rusted out.
