My 96 Chevy Suburban 1500 High top van has the same fuel pump. And watching you change the pump on this Silverado, l was surprised to see, they both have exactly the same fuel pump. That was a surprise for me, and finally, l can order the right fuel pump, since is being difficult to get a match just putting the 96 Chevy 1500 8cy High top suburban van only. They always gave me the wrong fuel pump. Thank you very much for the video and the instructions. You are the BEST mechanic on TH-cam by far. Congratulations. 😀👌
Finally good to see you happy. Just a piece of advice try not to have low fuel in your tank like very often near the red line. Because it will help to reduce the fuel pump live. As the fuel actually keeps the fuel pump cool so having low fuel help to wear out the bearing and all that stuff.
Man so glad to see this video. Exactly what I am doing right now. 2003 Yukon 5.3 flex fuel. My pump had been suspect for awhile and I got ahold of some bad gas and it finished the pump off. I ended up removing the whole tank and draining it, so I had to go an extra step. The part about not being able to get the truck high enough was so relatable. I pretty much did the whole job with one hand, and it was definitely a challenge!
Ouch bummer. . My Yukon pump rusted out on top I chopped a hole under the back seat. Put in a used one from the junkyard has been running good now for 4 years. GM should be ashamed of themselves all the brake lines Rust out in northern areas were there salt.
Sir I feel ya. I changed the oil pressure sensor on my daughter's gmc yukon 5.3. I didn't use the upgrade gaskets, now bank 2 is totally dead, misfiring and everything. I got good fuel pressure, spark, but no compression in cylinder 6. I took this thing apart 4 times. I replaced the cam sensor just for kicks. I'm ordering the kit from Amazon and hope this solves the problem. At least I got a code po174, bank2 lean. Plus my shtf and ltft is running at 48 to 50 percent. Well wish me well. I thank you for the video. Very helpful.
There no job like a job well done. I had a valve go on my 98 K1500 (Exhaust 3), so I had to get the heads off. They were cracked. I ordered new ones and slapped it together, but the job was tiresome! Cleaning the rockers, pushrods and nuts led me to a new level of chemical burns (Super Clean is a hell of a cleaner...), and trying to remember how it all came apart and went back together was tough. However, once she started up again and ran without a hiccup, I was overcome with the feeling of accomplishment. I loved it. When you do a tough job yourself and do it right with satisfactory results... there really is no better feeling. Great job, man!
I agree. Doing it yourself and everything working in the end is so satisfying. Not sure if I would do this job myself. Either get a friend or bite the bullet.
Pete be careful there is probably a cause .Running lean will make it run hot and crack exhaust valves.I had trouble with my 71 hilux the intake gasket wasn't sealing right and i burned an exhaust valve.
Nice work. I also, ended up changing my intake manifold gasket on my 02 Tahoe at a 170K. So, yours needed to be done. We have had our Tahoe since new and have no plans of getting rid of it. Even if you did throw some parts at it, which you didn't, you have a huge cushion by doing the work yourself, so you would still come out way ahead......especially when they mark up the price on the parts 2 and 3 times cost and the labor cost. Good job on sticking with it. Can't go wrong with the support from the wife.
I've been watching your videos for a while now. About led bulbs. But theses videos on getting your truck to start again just did it for me. I was there with you bro. I started watching your intake gasket and knock sensor replacement video. And now I saw this video. Congratulations buddy. I'm now a subscriber to your channel because of this. Looking forward to watching and learning alot from you. Thank you
Hello Jimmy….great Job….I am too lazy to drop the Tank and mine is always Full…sooooo today I Cut an Access Hatch in the Floor of my Suburban….which is the same as your 03….I never ever go below half a Tank….but I needed to change the tank pressure sensor…..whose gonna drop a tank for that !!! and she was dirty on top….have to change the tank vent valve tomorrow….but excellent…I carry a spare pump in my Suburban and all the Tools…spare retainer ring …line clips…ready for Failure…one hour and I should be up and running…Thanks….take good care of your beautiful Wife Too!
Excelent job you have saved over $1000 in replacing this fuel pump your self chevy dealers and local mechanics wants at least $800 to $1000 for this work
You gotta love "Thank you Lord" I use it myself when thing's go smoothly or when i figure it out! It's the go to phrase 4 sure! I replaced mine in my GMC Jimmy Diamond edition boy was it a pain!
That's hilarious. I do the same. But..... when I accidentally break something or something didn't work I'm always no Lord why! Lord Lord Lord no what did I do!? I bet He just laughs in heaven and says you'll get it eventually
Removing the rear driveshaft makes it much easier to remove the gas tank.Sometimes that clip the gas tank strap bolts bolt into breaks.Don't ever buy an Airtex fuel pump, these are garbage with high failure rates. The replacement plug ins with the replacement Delphi fuel pumps, were for up to 2001 GM truck applications. The plug in melted which was a common problem. The locking tabs,I throw them away since they are a PITA to get out.The plug in is in hearing a click
I’m Having the same problem. My fuel pump come in on Friday of this week, I hope I’m as lucky as you are bless you for having such great luck fixing your vehicle
As hard a time getting to the pump, working laying on your back, only able to use one hand, You got it done. CONGRATULATIONS. Your enthuastic war dance at the end was pricelles.
Congratulations Jimmy…your very dedicated….I have the exact same Suburban…changed all the same Parts….been paranoid of the pump…carry one in the back with all the tools needed… it….I hope to cut an access Hole this week…so I can replace it fast when it goes out….good job..…
I bought a pump from the same company, after all the rust and sweat i was happy to just put the pump back in the tank and later discovered the fuel gage to be on empty always. I needed to double check the fuel gage lever with a multimeter before installation. Plenty of help here on youtube.
You sir are an inspiration beyond words can say. I have enjoyed your very detailed vedios and your wifes happiness in the background is just wonderful. I myself have been faced with many challenges working on my truck doing " back yard mechanics" and nearly every time that I have faced difficult problems, I find myself watching your vedios and life seems to get easier. You have made different situations that i have faced easier to deal with because of your additude and perseverness Thank you loved the vedio and good for you completing this difficult fuel pump job AWSOME
I just watched the whole process starting from the fuel filter episode and I started smiling when the the engine kicked on 😁😃. You stayed the course and it all worked out. Thanks for the great videos!!
Getting it fixed is Relief! At 11:13 one of the electrical connectors looks like it has a burned connection. I replaced my pump a few years ago. The steel top of the pump assembly rotted through. PITA to replace that pump, especially the plastic tube connectors. GM should have made the sheet metal top out of plastic from the factory. The only part that was metal failed! Came up as an evap code on 05 Silverado.
Ya,I saw it all from fuel filter to fuel pump. I was right there with you when you started it up, I know that feeling bro. Have subscribed, keep the videos coming.
Glad I found you, my 2003 is doing the same thing.. died on me yesterday so today is trouble shooting. I think the first thing I"m doing is putting in a new gas filter.
Jimmy, as another viewer said, never run your veh under 1/4 tank of fuel (gas). The gas keeps the pump cool. Other wise they over heat and cook the impeller thus giving you little or no fuel to the engine.
I used to stick a funnel in the tank filler neck, have an assistant tun the key to the on pos, and listen to see if its coming on.The next thing if its coming on,is gently tap the bottom of the tank with a rubber hammer to loosen up the debris usually blocking the sock, and 5 times out of ten it will start enough to get it in the garage and change the pump.
happy you fixed it man! you also may want to invest in a spark tester like $25 along with your fuel pressure gauge! another thing those electric fuel pumps in the tank are cooled by fuel so running you tank too low with give to fuel pump a shorter life! generally a small to medium vacuum leak with not cause the engine not to start but i will just run poorly! i see you noticed some or the parts are different for the flex fuel trucks even some of the engine gaskets! which is impartant since the fuel with eat away the ones for the regular engine! Cheers man!
Dude I love this video because I commented you on one of your videos about a video about this and I didn't know you had one and I love how you thank the Lord Brother amen
Glad you got it fixed. A small shot of starting fluid might have saved you some work. But there is never anything wrong with putting fresh intake gaskets in.
Thanks... I'm about to pull my Tank to replace the ⛽ pump..... it's good to see what I'm up against... and to see forehand what I'm looking For and What needs done... thank you... thank you
Great video! I have a 2003 Suburban with the 5.3L Flex fuel also. I have been having trouble with “hard start” condition. Turn the key and it just turns over but won’t start. Then turn the key a second time and it starts. Connected fuel pressure gauge with key off and had 0 psi. When started 45 psi. Pressure immediately dropped to 0 psi when engine was turned off. Not smelling any gas fumes that would indicate an external tank leak. Fuel injector pressure regulator has no gas in vacuum line. No indication of injector issue with performance or OBD codes. Believe check valve at fuel pump is faulty and requires replacement. Any ideas? I think I will be installing a new fuel pump assembly soon. Thanks.
Congrats on your achievement in getting your suburban running again 👍🙏👌😅 and thanks for your inspirational videos. I will definitely go to your videos when I start working on my 2004 Chevy suburban.
My 07 dodge dakota is doing the same thing. First thing i checked was the fuel pump but after ordei tested my old pump n it was still working so i was confused n i put everything back together, still wasn't working so i thought injectors and bought injector cleaner which seemed to work cause my truck started after 3 or 4 tries. I drove the truck for 4 days (even on highways) and it drive just fine but the 5th day it wouldn't start again so i go to harbor freight n get the same pressure set you had in the last video and i have 0 pressure so I'm thinking the pump is bad but when i banged it around it worked for a few days but I'm just going to replace it and hope it fixes the problem
Keep going buddy. Good job , soon your channel will be the ultimate guide for the suburbans owner , but one thing missing try to interact with our comments becuse 90% of us said it was the fuel pump feom begnin , my brother is so crazy that he instaled 2 fuel pumps in the gas tank one work normal and the scound was by on off switch that in case if the first stop he would hit the switch to activit the 2nd fuel pump i really liked his idea .
My 97 S10 4.3L started just fine, drove it for about 20 feet. Then the engine died and would not start, had to get towed. Luckily it was an easy fix. I used an Accel cap & rotor and the cap happened to be tan instead of black. It burned thought the cap and was arching out on a nearby bolt. The cap was burt black where it failed. That cap was only a week old and they wouldn't warranty it. Never bought Accel ever since.
Just found you, my 2002 Yukon was having a harder and harder time starting and finally died at work. Buddy brought over a fuel pressure gauge. 0 psi. shot some brake clean in the air box and engine started, still 0 psi. Found out that this is common for this age truck.
What can clean out sugar or bleach in gas tank The reason am asking is because someone at my wife work told her that another worker saw them put something in her gas tank a week ago because she was hired for a higher position now am trying to figure out how to check by pulling down the gas tank but not sure if it made it to the engine and if it did how am able to clean it without taking the engine
Good job I have a 2003 with a 6.0 liter. If you ever have to do a neutral safety switch you will discover that GM thought it was a good idea to glue those wire connector plugs together. Why? To make things difficult for the consumer.
Sometimes a car company will redesign a part in the middle of production. That is why some people have a part that is not 100% identical, even if they get it from the dealership or OEM parts supplier. Other times the OEM part will be redesigned after a few years because too many of them were failing, although in my experience, this is rare. This happens with many car companies. I had to deal with many 1998, 1999, and 2000 VW Beetles and Cabrios which had a mix of parts from MKIII and MKIV Jettas and Golfs.
Heres something to help you out For your next repair. Spray PB blaster or wd-40 on the lug Wait 30 to 1 hour before removing it. Make it easier to remove it. If it gives u problems halfway. Spray more on it and wait couple secs then remove lug.
The 04 non flex fuel or straight gas 5.3 fuel pump is different as I just changed one out. The pump has 3 inlets/outlets or in the actual names one supply line, return line, and vent to charcoal canister. The plugs are a single flat 4 prone plug containing your power and grounds for both the pump and signal activation and a single flat 2 prong plug which is the power ground to your fuel level gauge. Along with having the fuel filter built inside of pump. And having lines inside of the tank to disconnect and connect to bottom side of pump So yes to answer your question in the video they are different. It is easier if you have your rear tires off the ground by about 8 inches or so, I used crib blocks and blocked up both tires up. Also removing the spare allows better access to the fuel filler neck from the rear of vehicle. Once the rear of tank is down, and you have enough room left, tween tank and rear end due to the tires being blocked all you have to do to is take a bar and pry a little tween the bracket and tank as you lower your jack little by little and the tank will slide right out. I used 4x4 blocks on each side of my jack to catch tank without pinning my jack. Also a price of plywood cut to size between tank bands. To place jack under is a big help in evenly distribution of weight in tank. I also empty fuel tank after getting out and clean good. Leave empty when reinstalling or just put enough in to test function prior to completely reinstalling tank. Saves if you made a misstep somewhere from having to remove tank again. Than when reinstalled you can add fuel, I put mine back in by hand without a jack with just enough fuel to test function prior to reinstall made it so much easier. Hope this helps someone trying this down the road. Also removing the driveshaft does give you enough room to work in that area of the vehicle unrestricted. I recommend doing it as it is easier to work if you already know how to take out a driveshaft. If not find a video showing how, it’s really simple but you, take out the four bolts at rear holding u joint brackets, jar with a hammer. Helps if front tires are scotched good. And vehicle put into neutral so you can turn driveline to gain access to all bolts easier. One rear is down just rotate and pull to rear may need a little jarring to at front as I slide out. BE EXTREMELY Careful not to knock your brains out with it or to let the caps come off cause if you do those little bearings inside can fall out everywhere and they are a BIOTCH.
my 2002 gmc savana is throwing gas from on top of the pump. The previous owner says they put a new pump on it. I'm wondering if that plastic top may have cracked. Sure hope not
Too bad GM design engineers did not design a fuel pump access door or plate so one could remove the pump without lowering the tank assembly. I hear these in tank fuel pumps have a history of going bad often.
I cracked the fuel pump assembly in my 2004 Corvette just by filling it up. It released a lot of fumes, and I didn't even over fill it. That was the most expensive tank of gas ever.
Did I miss one of the most important parts of this job, how to properly detach and re-attach the fuel and vapor lines? Is there a special fuel line tool or application needed for this? Thanks and good job.
Bro I changed my fuel pump by removing my carpet on the driver side n cutting the floor...it's easy n less aggravation..I used 3/4 self tapping screws n strips of sheet metal to lock it back down with rubberized tape
It’s always great to see someone that is happy with their achievements just as much as we are learning from it!!!

We're all so proud of you Jimmy. I had to replace the fuel pump in my '98 Silverado twice. Good vid.

I know it’s an old video bro but great job on this. Yes, I know exactly how you felt! Keep it up man.
Nice work. I also, ended up changing my intake manifold gasket on my 02 Tahoe at a 170K. So, yours needed to be done. We have had our Tahoe since new and have no plans of getting rid of it. Same thing happened to my car as well and it was a great feeling to fix it myself. Good job.
Glad I found you, my 2003 is doing the same thing.. died on me yesterday so today is trouble shooting. I think the first thing I"m doing is putting in a new gas filter.
Be extremely careful if you’re going to attempt yourself. Those lines can be pressurized and spray fuel out all over the place.
lol I know this is old video. but i felt good that it finally turned on. congrat to you

Luckily your tank was NOT NEAR FULL. And, pick up a set of 6K LB Jack Stands, as they are much taller (= more room). Good job, and good video.
I know it feel good when you fix your own car
I have a 2002 Silverado
Good information for later use
Good videos

Glad you figured it all out and got it all fixed.
Great job man you act like I do when I fix my van
Dude I love this video because I commented you on one of your videos about a video about this and I didn't know you had one and I love how you thank the Lord Brother amen
Glad you got it fixed. A small shot of starting fluid might have saved you some work. But there is never anything wrong with putting fresh intake gaskets in.

Great video! I have a 2003 Suburban with the 5.3L Flex fuel also. I have been having trouble with “hard start” condition. Turn the key and it just turns over but won’t start. Then turn the key a second time and it starts. Connected fuel pressure gauge with key off and had 0
psi.
What I'm going to have done is cutting accessport in the back of my Suburban that way I can just reach down and change the fuel pump when needed
Remember if you cut a hole I was told you have to make it big enough for the angle that it needs to go in.
That would be a good video as I have cut holes in the side of ships to access things that seem to F up all the time!
I do this to all my suburbans and Tahoe’s
Screw dropping the tank. Especially when it’s a 44 gallon tank and it’s full lol
My 07 dodge dakota is doing the same thing. It was great to watch your videos and happy you got it running
If you’re wondering. Yes the fuel pump for the flex fuel version is different from the non flex fuel version
Great job man. I bet that felt really good. I'm doing mine tomorrow
I had a 1998 Tahoe years ago and I had to replace it twice. I wonder if Chevrolet will ever start putting a decent fuel pump on their vehicles.
Lord be with you on this one. That z for sure.
Thank you .for showing me how you fixed it I have an 03 yukon xl
I am amazed that there are so many gremlins in a truck with such low miles.
Awesome job fixing the 'burban dude. Now let's see some upgrade videos
That's why its always good to test the obvious before u just throw parts into it, but job well done
Never bought Accel ever since.
i just replaced mine and it wont start at all now im going through the ringer im happy yours started bro.
Just found you, my 2002 Yukon was having a harder and harder time starting and finally died at work. Buddy brought over a fuel pressure gauge. 0 psi. shot some brake clean in the air box and engine started, still 0 psi. Found out that this is common for this age truck.
Everything in His time. Great feeling when it works out.
What can clean out sugar or bleach in gas tank
The reason am asking is because someone at my wife work told her that another worker saw them put something in her gas tank a week ago because she was hired for a higher position now am trying to figure out how to check by pulling down the gas tank but not sure if it made it to the engine and if it did how am able to clean it without taking the engine
Don't worry.Replace feulfilter.No problem with engine!!
Dilute dilute it will be fine invest in a camera my friend
Congrats good job and great mechanic
Smokey Yunick was a "great" mechanic. Jimmy is still climbing that long ladder but at least he's on it.
Was it hard jacking the tank back up?
I know how you feel. When something finally goes right, it's great.
Yea those little victories feel so good
Good job I have a 2003 with a 6.0 liter.
Did you swap over the fuel line clips from the old to the new pump? Didn't show it in the video, but I hope you did...
Haha yes. Just forgot to film it.
Heres something to help you out
For your next repair.
Spray PB blaster or wd-40 on the lug
Wait 30 to 1 hour before removing it.
Make it easier to remove it.
If it gives u problems halfway. Spray more on it and wait couple secs then remove lug.
Help me Jimmy
Fuel pump change but no start what do I do?
Yep i had to get the same pump for my 2004 Tahoe and it works like a champ good choice
My Burban sounded exactly like that when I started up! Before my fuel pump went out of course...
Another great video Jimmy good job👍
Good job Jimmy im happy for you
Did you ever check the new fuel pressure? I have a 2003 suburban and im only getting 40psi so I was just curious thanks
Lol I did feel happy at the end .
Keep it up 👍
What did you have to do to get the fuel tank all the way out towards the end?
The 04 non flex fuel or straight gas 5.3 fuel pump is different as I just changed one out.
The pump has 3 inlets/outlets or in the actual names one supply line, return line, and vent to charcoal canister. The plugs are a single flat 4 prone plug containing your power and grounds for both the pump and signal activation and a single flat 2 prong plug which is the power ground to your fuel level gauge. Along with having the fuel filter built inside of pump.
And having lines inside of the tank to disconnect and connect to bottom side of pump
So yes to answer your question in the video they are different.
Good video and superior attitude. Thank you.
How did you end up dropping the tank in its entirety?
The fuel lines on the frame to the filter was still connected
man that is a clean older suburban
How do you check and change fuel pump in a 1992 Chevrolet Cheyenne
So it was out of fuel????????
my 2002 gmc savana is throwing gas from on top of the pump.
You can cut your own access panel using a oscillating tool
Congratulations 👏🏽 love that feeling.
I cracked the fuel pump assembly in my 2004 Corvette just by filling it up. It released a lot of fumes, and I didn't even over fill it. That was the most expensive tank of gas ever.
It is nice to be able to meet the Lord halfway.
Amen! Thank you Jesus.. I'm working on mine pray for me please 🙏
May I ask ?? How many hours did it take for you to replace your fuel pump ?? I will be replacing mine on my 05 GMC Envoy .... thank you
Did you place a prefilter on the pump? You had one on the old pump but I didn't see one on the new pump?
Did I miss one of the most important parts of this job, how to properly detach and re-attach the fuel and vapor lines? Is there a special fuel line tool or application needed for this?
Thanks and good job.
So it looks like you ended up taking the gas tank out? How necessary would you say that is?
Yes after a long time , you fixed it
Love these videos Jim!
Bro I changed my fuel pump by removing my carpet on the driver side n cutting the floor...it's easy n less aggravation..I used 3/4 self tapping screws n strips of sheet metal to lock it back down with rubberized tape
Congratulations bro I was routing for you.
