  • 🏊‍♂️ 🚴🏻 🏃‍♂️💑 In this vlog we share about Caleb's big race! After 18 weeks of training, the moment is here! The weather was gloomy but spirits were on cloud 9! The race was a battle. In a marathon, it doesn't take much to derail even the best of plans. On this day, things fell together and it was an amazing race that I will never take for granted! So blessed!

Congrats!! There is nothing like pushing through and having a great result! I was there running the half and PR'd myself. So glad we didn't get rained on the whole time. Really neat to see where we just ran. Great camera work/editing!

Hey hows it going Efird? Great job on the 3 14 PR! awesome marathon time! my name is Trey and i have been running and distance running since 2017. As a former powerlifter when i first started in 2017 i was way SLOWER my first marathon was in 2017 myrtle beach i did in 4 hours and 36 min.......then i did charlotte in november 2017 and got my time down to 4 14 on a COLD charlotte morning. Im way better in the cold by the way...then in March 2019 i ran my fastest marathon in 4 hours 1 min just missing sub 4....in 70 degree weather that year.....i thought i was on my way to big gains after that but in march 2022 myrtle beach when i ran marathon i struggled and barely ran a 4 16 marathon no where near sub 4........and now just yesterday myrtle beach marathon in the high humidity i struggled once again and barely got under 4 20..........i feel like i have went BACKWARDS. I was wondering if u you had any advice on what i would need do in more of my long runs and training....i mostly train my long runs at lower heart rate slower pace 9 min paces.....do u think i need to start doing more tempo long runs? like try getting more 8 min paces in my long runs mostly? i started out conservative yesterday 9 min paces and fell apart after mile 19, prabably was humdity. Anyway it has been very very frustrating as runner who gets up 6 and 7 am EVERY weekend to run 18-20 milers and put in all mileage i do and never see results....do u think i just need to start focusing on getting faster at shorter distances like the half marathon? my best half marathon is around 1 44, but all out effort. I also do strength training 5x5 bench pressing and squats every week. Any advice on how i could blast past this marathon plateau in future? Just wondering because it has been very frustrating trying to run the full since 2019....maybe im just more built for the half marathon. Do you think i just need to start working on speed speed speed for longer runs and try shoot for sub 3 45 next year? maybe try running more 18-20 milers at 8 min paces or faster? Just wondering if u had any advice thank you! Trey

Hey Trey! Thank you for checking out the channel! First of all, congrats on being a multiple 26.2 finisher! I can totally relate to your story. Before 2020, I was struggling to run more than 3 miles at a 10 minute pace. Its so hard to give advice without asking a million questions and knowing your story. Physical adaptations can be very individualistic. I'll just share some things that I believe are generally beneficial and principles that helped me drastically.
First, do what you enjoy. If you aren't enjoying running, its hard to stick with it. If you enjoy low hr runs, do them! 2. If you are training for a specific race, find a plan online and stick with it. I use a plan by Steve Palladino that uses power-based running but thats not for everyone. My wife has used B.A.A. plans and had much success with that. She is now using the Run Less, Run Faster plan by Bill Pierce/Scott Murr. Find a plan that you like and fits your schedule and most importantly STICK WITH IT!!! Consistent training trumps anything else. 3. These topics will likely be covered by a good training plan. I like 1 speed work, 1 tempo, and 1 long run with speed included. Most of my long runs on this build included a portion of the run at goal marathon pace at the end of my LR. (The first run started at 15 mins and the last one had 45 mins at GMP).
Please keep me updated on your running journey!

pt 2. One major thing that got me past my plateau was hill sprints. They were painful and hard but for some reason, I found alot of satisfaction in them. This was not part of a race build but just running with Katie.
Something someone told me a long time ago, if you don't do it in training, don't expect to do it on race day. Add some tempo or intervals into your long run.
One last question I want to address.... I do not think its necessary to stop marathons and focus on shorter distance races. However, I do believe it is hard to have a proper build and race in more than 2 marathons per year and it takes a long time to recover from them. I love the 13.1 distance because recovery is much easier AND time commitments aren't as bad for your long runs. 3:45! YOU CAN DO IT. I believe in you!! Commit and Conquer it! #TreyStrong!

Thank you Efird! u know whats crazy and funny?? it seems like when i did my best full marathon in 2019......it was before i got a garmin gps watch, and i was using a fitbit charge 2 and not running by gps and possibly at slower paces for most my long runs and runs......im wondering if i have been worryying about my GPS pace to much and stressing out about my pace all time. Seems like ever since i got my first garmin watch in 2021 of march my running has went downhill......and back 2018 and 2019 when i was using fitbit i didint care about pace and most likely was running 10-30 to 11 min pace in training for 2 plus hours and i thinking i was better aerobic trained....bec in fall of 2018 that year right before my full i did half marathon nov of 2018 and did easy effort sub 1 50 half......now since working harder with gps it feels like running sub 148 and 1 50 feels hard......i feel like i was better aerobic trained back then possibly and now i worry to much about gps and pace. When i did the myrtle beach marathon 2 weeks ago i started out at a 9 min pace thinking it was easy conservative start, and it felt good until about mile 18 then everything started going down hill and i hit wall 19 and average pace went way slower to 9 45 9 50 by end race. You think i should started at 9 30 paces possibly and went faster towards end. Bec in training i did 21 and 20 milers at 9 25 and 9 20 paces easy. Maybe i started to fast and didint stay in zone 3.......Im hoping by next year my easy pace can get down to 8-825 paces for long runs then i can shoot for PR in full. I dunno i feel like ever since ive got my garmin i have went downhill maybe i need do most my runs easy heart rate and go slower and do 1 speed long run week.
