My bf & I flew from Colombia to Orlando (then back to Canada the next day), and we were stopped at the airport for searching/swabbing. Not sure why, I guess we were young & maybe looked raggedy. Also we held different passports (Canadian/Hungarian). We were backpacking in South America. We didn't mind the search since we didn't have anything, but the attitude of the American officers was so incredibly rude and suspicious, it made me very anxious. Treated us like absolute criminals from the very beginning. They didn't seem to quite understand why we went there and really grilled us. My experience with UK officers was totally different - they'll even joke around with you! Which is also evidenced in these videos. They're taking it very seriously & doing their job, but they seem overall more relaxed than in US airports.
The American style is to try and make people nervous, then they're "more likely to slip up", but the British style is to 'cajole' you into slipping up!
They act like that towards everyone, I've yet to come across a polite US customs official. We had to wait an hour in Hawaii as the young guy in front of us was grilled as the US official found him suspicious , young single guys who have open ended travel plans are a major target for them.
