      So true. I even said to someone recently that it seems to me that so many young people for the past fifteen years look so unfriendly/grumpy/sour-like. Back in the '80s whether I was hanging out with the creatives types or more conservative friends, everyone, for the most part, was approachable and rather friendly. Some of the attitude today probably has to do with the invasion of technology.

    Songs for anyone looking:
    0:00 The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
    0:34 The Cramps - New Kind of Kick
    1:20 Soft Cell - Bedsitter
    2:50 Nocera - Summertime, Summertime (Original Club Mix) (it also sounds very much like this might be a live version, which I'm unable to locate anywhere aside from in this video. Either way, it's still the club mix and not the album version)

There has got to be some video of me dancing at Thrillers niteclub, Confettis, Club ISIS, Lenotes Discotheque, Razmatazz nightclub or Butterfly's Suite, the Rotunda Revolving Lounge, Lipsticks or the Ritz, circa 84-87 In Metro Detroit.

      Mia Lynn I hate to say this, but the 1980s were laced with homophobia to a degree that I don’t think kids can imagine anymore. Add HIV/AIDS to the mix, and 99 percent of the world were terrified of anything that could be even remotely construed as gay. Everyone in this video looks so damn happy because (1) this is a kickass nightclub that kids would drive miles across California to get to, with an amazing DJ who knows how to get people up and dancing, and (2) ecstasy was so damn easy to get, which is why everyone is chewing gum. The scene was very similar across the country.

    • @davidcross701

    • @Dragonpuncher123
      @Dragonpuncher123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What are you talking about?? 80’s was the biggest era for labeling subculture, young people became extremely definded by the kind of music they heard and hung out in groups of like minded people more than every before. Look no futher than the different clubs in this video, there is a clear look in each place, but they don’t really blend with each other. You don’t see someone looking like a metalhead in the New Wave club.
      Today the whole thing is a lot more muddied. Young people aren’t defining themselves by music in the same way any more and if you follow a subculture, it’s much more likely to have friends with people from other groups. This is probably in large part because of the internet, because many people are now part of a lot more than one community. You can be goth and huge gamer for example and nobody would bat an eye.

    I just came across these vidoes. What is truly amazing, is this footage actually exists!!! I was 24 in 87. I know for a fact, photos and especially filmiing was kind of "what the **** are you doing man?" We were NOT a narcissistic bunch lol. Or maybe it was, "I dont want any record of that shit im doing!" I have zero pics of the parties i went to. Certainly no footage of the many nights spent in clubs. And believe me, Vancouver in the 80s was happening. 😂 I feel sorry for my kids. Now, its like "excuse me while I stare at my phone." Or shame someone on tiktoc or whatever. I was truly blessed to be a young person in the 80s.

      truly sorry. your gen is pretty fucking awful. I can't even begin to tell you how exciting it was back then, everything was new and being defined as we went along... you actually had to go to clubs to hear new music - you would rely on DJs to play you the newest tracks. All the songs you hear in this - even the ones you know almost NEVER got played on the radio back then. They were actually 'underground' (with the exception of a bunch of crappy freestyle tracks) - there was so much new stuff but you really had to hunt for it, where as today you're kind of sifting through the garbage all the time. I'm still not over it. I always try to bring this element with me to DJ gigs today but most people only want to hear crap they know which I think is idiotic.

      just wish your generation could come up with something new instead regurgitating shit everyone else did years ago. the hairstyles and fashion of the 80s should stay in the 80s, same with the 90s. And mashing the 2 together and calling it your own is not what I mean by original.

      We all had issues back then :) You can tell no one was used to being filmed. We didn't even have a camcorders. Hell, we were lucky to have cordless phones. If you watch everyone you'll see they are all mostly shy, giddy, or show-offs like a lot of teens nowadays. Except we always were smoking cigs and more than likely drunk. (at least we all were at the So. California club I spent my weekends at) We leaned a tad bit to the goth side. I remember sharing eyeliner and lipstick with my boyfriend and we used tons of Aqua Net. But we still had issues. We all wanted to fit in and we all had our hearts broken many times over. There was a lot of depression then too, just different triggers. I lost 3 friends to suicide within 3 years. So it wasn't all peachy all the time. xo

    I was born in 97. I saw a massive change in our society throughout the 2000s with my own eyes. My dad was an 80s guy. He was in a thrash band in California, so he saw all the wonders of the world. We both agree that something is very wrong these days. Most of the kids today complain about it. How they all feel out of touch and depressed, anxious, and out of place. That's just regular teens and young adults. I know some say that's how every generation is. To a degree that is true. But most will agree, something is very wrong. I hope we find balance and create something better and fresh. I think the 80s shined because you had to create your own sound and not copy and paste everything. You had to really earn your way to becoming a musician. Now, any kid with a laptop, a mic, and a closet can post something on sound cloud and make a crappy mumble rap song that sounds like a drunk goat. But few can truly write music and make people feel something. Not saying tech is all bad. But it has been abused, not used as a tool but as an escape. Maybe I'm wrong. But I don't enjoy today. Some of it is ok, but nothing feels great. Idk.
