Thanks for the video. My wife (62) and I (61) tried getting a handyman out to install. We contacted about a half dozen of them, and none could work us into their schedule for the next 3 weeks. We got quotes anywhere from $120 up to $750 for the installation. Instead of waiting forever or becoming a victim of highway robbery, we used your video as an instruction guide and were surprised at how simple it was. We both have bad backs and got it done injury-free. To make the lifting simpler, we moved our stove so we could support directly from beneath, bent at the waist, and lifting or supporting weight is not our friend. If you're hesitating to try this yourself, don't, just be sure to have an extra hand and follow the instructions in this video.
Whirlpool should give this man a royalty. Like many others, a big factor for selecting this was that someone made a good full video. Luckily I was replacing a unit so this matched up in size. I was able to reuse the holes from the original bracket and just had to drill new holes for the top cabinet to the microwave. I didnt even look at the instructions and just followed this video. thanks
Thank you so much for posting your greatly done video showing in such clear details of how to install this Whirlpool over the range microwave! Just what I needed! Also thanks to your assistant Tricia!😀
I'm going to be installing 13 of these tomorrow, and i think you just saved me a lot of time. I did NOT think i was going to find a video with the exact model and orientation! thanks
This is the best video on how to install a Whirlpool Over-the-Range microwave with roof-venting. His explanations and instructions are easy to follow. The picture quality is excellent and one can clearly see everything he does, including unpacking, collecting the tools needed, making the markings, finding the stud, using the template, etc. There is no guesswork here. Using these instructions I could install my Whirlpool WMH53521HZ microwave. Although, my model is different, the instructions and techniques shown in this video did the job for me. A big thanks and Thumps-up for Borsellino!
BHS - this video was awesome! Had purchased this unit direct from Whirlpool with installation (decided to cut myself a break). My installation has a roof vent and was a replacement of an older Whirlpool unit. Installers were total morons - damaged my top cabinet, damaged the microwave, tried to convince me that this unit wouldn't top vent, and then tried to leave the unit here for me to deal with. Explained to them (convincingly) that they were not going to leave my property unless the damaged unit was on their truck. I bought another one from Menards - display model, no box. I spent 45 minutes on the phone with Whirlpool and another 90 minutes on a live chat with them trying to get the measurements for the vent cutout, mounting holes and placement of the support rail. Got nowhere - was ready to start hassling Whirlpool HQ, when I found your video - you saved the day!! For the benefit of your followers - here are the measurements: 1. Mounting rail (goes on back wall - centered, 17-5/16" from the bottom of the mounting rail to the BOTTOM of the cabinet (this is also the top of the microwave unit - if the top goes up against bracing below the top cabinet bottom, you'll measure to the bottom of the bracing. The measurement is 15-5/8" if you're measuring from the bottom of the cabinet to the TOP of the mounting rail. 2. Vent cutout - 12-1/2" x 4-3/4" - centered (6-1/4" on either side of the center line) and 1" from the back wall. 3. Power cord hole (1-1/2" hole) - 6-3/8" to right of center line and 6-1/2" from back wall. 4. Holes in top cabinet (for mounting screws) - Hole D - 12-1/2" to left of centerline & 10" from back wall Hole E - 7-1/2" to right of centerline & 10" from back wall I had to improvise for the venting. Had existing 10 x 3.25 square duct that extended below the bottom of the cabinet. Had to cut it off (in the cabinet above the microwave and then modified a starter collar I got at Lowes (www.lowes.com/pd/IMPERIAL-3-25-in-x-10-in-Galvanized-Steel-Rectangular-Stack-Duct-Starting-Collar/1000230291?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-plb-_-ggl-_-LIA_PLB_171_Air-Circulation-_-1000230291-_-local-_-0-_-0&ds_rl=1286981&gclid=CjwKCAiAmuKbBhA2EiwAxQnt72B8NoZoUBup2IzjeVKfgCnacyQhommk9hBHsbhWidkjrYNuF7g2wxoCEQQQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) so I could slide it up into the existing ductwork and then down over the new damper assembly on the microwave. My modifications were: 1. Straighten out the bent lip and tabs (so they were back to the 10 x 3.25 square shape - so they'd slide up the ducting) 2. Drill out the rivets and remove the pieces on the other end of it (so it would slide nicely over the damper assembly) 3. Trim away the end (#2) so that it cleared the hinge/pivot of the damper flapper and wouldn't interfere with ti opening & closing. Once in place, I duct taped it to minimize air leaks. Again, you saved the day for me!
I didn’t use this video to install my microwave. I did watch it to make sure I didn’t do anything wrong. Very good. Video cover is a lot of good details recommend it.
Thanks very much; watching your video gave me the confidence to install my Whirlpool over the range micro. Your clear and simplified how to video was just what I needed.
Thank you so much for this start to finish video. Don't think I could have installed it without this video. Superb job to you (and your assistant). Being 77 years old with a questionable back, I did move the stove out of the way. Made it easier to lift into place. Thanks again.
Thank you so much. Precise & concise procedural explanations, including tips not written on the manufacturer’s specifications, like extra tools needed to install the microwave.
Thanks for doing this video. I had installed mine 8 years ago but it slipped my mind how it was secured with the 2 bolts. Appreciate the effort in putting the video together!
Thank you so much for explaining the measurements. My cabinet had sort of protruding edges front & back and measurements weren't going as easily as expected. You helped a lot and saved me from going nuts. Thanks again.
05/23/2022 Awesome video!! Good info from start to finish! Your Good sense of humor reminds me of myself when working on projects, got to be positive. I observed your able assistant almost suffered a skull fracture as you performed your job briefing. And you gave her the heavy end to lift!! I will be replacing a Hotpoint unit that we installed 17 years ago. I have slept since then and since I am 74 years old and my assistant is 72 we will proceed at a slower pace. Of course there is more to the story but it is WAY past my bedtime. Another day. Stay Safe, Healthy and God Bless! Patty
Nice job on the installation and the video. Will install the same appliance at my daughter's house tomorrow and having watched your installation it should go much smoother. Thanks again.
Saved my ass by posting this video. The template was NOT on paper like other identical models. I can’t believe they would have you cut it out of a cardboard box. Almost made too much Swiss cheese out of my cabinet to mount the upper bolts
I have this microwave oven for several months now and notice the auto fan when it detects heat on, it will go on for a long time, several hours, I had Whirlpool before this and it wasn't like that, even when I measure the temperature at the oven, it was same as surrounding, but fan still going. I had to unplug every time because it suck out indoor conditioned air and that cost a lot of energy bill, even the microwave wire at the plug feel warm to the touch. About installing, I had to use aluminum tape to seal the vent at front door in order to route all air suck in from cooking below to outside, the oven setting/damper allows air to vent both directions.
Great Job does the exhaust vent come with microwave and how would you extend it if to short? are the exhaust vents standard ? can I get or do I have to order from whirlpool ? Thanks Again new subscriber!
Hey thanks! This will help me install one today. I'd rather watch someone do it than read instructions. You did a very thorough job. If I had made a video it would been all jacked up with cussing and screwups lol.
My GE microwave from 2005 finally crapped out. At first th-cam.com/users/postUgkxO_Bc204MGjxDl87cOKcdgaRhzSqGmv_g I was unsure because I was looking for something with the exact same features. Found it with this one. Interior space cavity was large, but the outside was smaller than my old one. I love the one-button push for 1-6 minutes, and the 30 second add or 30 second start. and MOST IMPORTANTLY, I love how you can adjust the power level during cooking. The reviews said it could not be done, but this marked all the other boxes. and happy to say, it does. I can hit 1 minute start, and change the power level from 10 to 5, 30 seconds in, without interruption. my favorite feature!
Great video! It will help me to know what to expect when I go to do mine, same make and model. Thank you sir! [liked.saved.subscribed] Replacing a GE where the magnitron died just a month after the warranty ran out. No more GE appliances for me. But the setup looks to be about the same so we will see how it goes. Thanks again for your contribution!!!
I used a manual hacksaw and a drywall saw for the cutout, what a pain on that fiberboard the cabinet was made out of. I'll have to buy an oscillating tool sometime.
you can get them pretty cheap as a kit that comes with blades. Back when they first came out the tool anone was like $400 but now a whole kit is closer to $100. Harbor freight even sells a super cheap version with no attachments for $19.99! The blades can be pricey though and the cheap blades just don't work well or last long
Good Vid,,,,,,,,,,, Got mom a new whirlpool figured Id take a look, see if there was anything I didnt know, nothin to it, why not slide the stove out ? Bit easier access, stove slides easy. just a thought,,,,,,,👍
I bought the same Whirlpool microwave before. It was the same model I bought to replace it so all We had to do was remove the old microwave and install the new one in it's place. Simple swap out.
So you rotate blower motor up for roof venting installation only. I don't have roof venting, so I'm assuming I'd have to do the wall venting installation. But wouldn't that just blow onto the wall? I don't have wall venting either on my wall. The microwaveI'm replacing had a vent in the front on top of the door. So I'm now second guessing if i bought the correct microwave for my setup.
i believe there are 3 options, top vent, back vent, and self recirculating vent. for the wall vent it's for microwaves that are on an exterior wall and you install the vent straight out the wall behind it
I put the wall bracket up it was too high so I lowered it had the microwave on it then I tightened the bolts in the cabinet until there's no space showing now the bracket isn't in the microwave holes but the microwave is tight and isn't moving should I take the microwave down and move the bracket up a little then put the microwave back up and tighten it back or should I loosen the bolts up some
honestly I'm having trouble understand what it is exactly that you are asking. But my only suggestion would be to put the bracket at the exact distance down from the cabinet that the instructions say, and it should work
4 years later. Is the microwave still working? My whirlpool only lasted 4 years then quit completely. I never opened the door without hitting stop first, so it's not that common problem. I junked it and left the space open for usefull shelving. Best decision ever.
Great video. Gave me some good insight. I bought a 6yo house with a Whirlpool microwave (wmh2175xvs) already installed. It appears the blowers are pointing the correct upward direction for outside ventilation because my outside wall vent louvers open when the vent is on. On the top of the microwave, just in front and under the cabinet to which it is attached, there are series of holes which I assume are used as the outgoing vent for when the microwave is configured to blow forward (recirculating). When I run the vent, there is a suction along these holes. Looking inside these holes, I see a dirty metal filter (not the filter under the microwave where air is drawn from the stove). 2 questions: Should I somehow remove this internal filter and clean it? It is not obvious just how to remove this filter without uninstalling the microwave. If these holes are used for the recirculating vent configuration (which I am not configured for), can I simply tape over these holes to force more suction on the underside of the microwave? Thanks in advance.
Honestly I don't know much about how they are build beyond this installation video. I'd say give it a shot! You can always take the tape off! And you'll find out pretty quickly if you start pulling it apart if there is a filter or not inside. Doesn't make sense to me that they would put a hidden filter though
it's pretty easy to do if you have the tools and are mechanically inclined! It comes with directions and everything. Only tricky part is if your cabinets are weird and if the vent isn't lined up right
You are a life saver. The installation instructions that came with the unit were useless! Question, does it matter which way the one way vent door opens ( front to back as opposed to back to front?). I have the same wall vent setup as you with it opening up to the ceiling.
As for the vent, I have no idea. Just make sure the airflow is going in the direction of your vent. You probably have it installed already though this comment was 6 days ago
Do you need to install the vent part? I just bought a new home and it has this microwave. It turns on and everything it just doesn't heat up? Any help is useful thanks.
That's weird. I don't think the vent has any correlation with heating things in the microwave but I'm just a carpenter guy, not en electrical/mechanical engineer. Sounds broken to me
At 24:09 you install the vent (that is a bit short); I am stuck here as the microwave did not come with the vent. Where did you get it? and what exactly is it called?
hey, seeing this 2 months late sorry! Hopefully you figured it out. I don't know exactly what it is called, just rectangular ductwork I think is what you're referencing. I just measured the dimensions of it and went to home depot or somewhere like that and bought the closest thing and cut it to fit
I installed cabinets on a brick wall once and bought these big mollys meant for concrete and drilled holes and attached a wood board to the wall so I could attach the cabinets to that.
Can this unit be hard wired in? Just took out the old unit... there is no plug, just a wire coming out of the wall which was connected to the oven and then black taped into a bundle.
Putting in the same microwave but in black. Had to replace my original Whirlpool. Unfortunately, the bracket wasn't the same, so had to measure thrice to drill once. I do hate my stud finder though
@@BorsellinoHomeServices looks like an interesting product, but reviews seem split on it. Finished the installation this morning. Needed longer toggle bolts for the mounting bracket. I was slightly off on the cabinet holes, but got them in the microwave. If I used a slightly bigger bit for that hole it probably wouldn't have been a problem
Great video! One question. The bottom of my upper cabinet has a frame around it. Does the WALL cardboard template (mine came with a paper template), butt up to the bottom of the frame or does the template need to be trimmed so it fits inside the frame? Just to be clear, I'm speaking of the wall template, not the upper cabinet template.
I had this model installed about 2 months ago, and a big let down is that the buttons on the display don't ever light up. We have to turn on the kitchen light to see the keypad. Odd that the display of the time is the only lit part of the entire keypad panel.
it seems to work pretty good. i don't use it very often but when i do it definitely works. the HI setting is not terribly loud, but loud enough that I don't run it longer than I need to. I usually run it on LOW though and it's not bad and sometimes I forget to turn it off while I'm eating then I'm cleaning up dinner and realize the fan is still on
if your microwave sticks out past the cabinet like mine does you can take them off after. but they shouldn't be blocked i believe that's for airflow venting
I bought the model wmh31017hz07 and it says manufactured April 2021. The vent system looks different and that attached piece has nowhere to attach. I guess they changed the newer ones, yet I still have to vent flap thingy part but there's nothing to attach it to. Plus, the dang mounting screws don't won't screw in more than a couple threads. I don't know what gives.
Thanks it was very helpful. It would seem to me that the brackets holding up microwaves are fairly standard now. I am replacing my microwave rather than installing it anew. Do you think the brackets could be interchangeable with the replacement microwave? I think it's worth a try versus redrilling holes, etc. My old microwave is a Maytag CMV1100AAW.
That's awesome! Maybe I should reach out to whirlpool and offer to be there installation video guy!
Followed this video step by step and installed my microwave and saved $246 on installation from the store 😊

4 years later and this video is still relevant. Thanks for the instructions and video guide. Helped us a bunch for our microwave install!
Great job! You're a measure twice, cut once kinda guy. Perfect. Thanks!
For the benefit of your followers - here are the measurements:
4. Holes in top cabinet (for mounting screws) -
Hole D - 12-1/2" to left of centerline & 10" from back wall
Hole E - 7-1/2" to right of centerline & 10" from back wall
I had to improvise for the venting. My modifications were:
1. Straighten out the bent lip and tabs (so they were back to the 10 x 3.25 square shape - so they'd slide up the ducting)
2. Drill out the rivets and remove the pieces on the other end of it (so it would slide nicely over the damper assembly)
3. Trim away the end (#2) so that it cleared the hinge/pivot of the damper flapper and wouldn't interfere with ti opening & closing.
Once in place, I duct taped it to minimize air leaks.
Again, you saved the day for me!

BEST instructions ever. I HATE reading those manuals. Thanks man!
you're totally welcome!!!
Thanks for this video!!!! we followed your video and it was spot on. My wife and I did not go to divorce court...lol.....thanks!!!
Very detailed video, Whirlpool should pay you lot of money for what you did. Thanks a lot for sharing
Thank you so much for explaining the measurements. My cabinet had sort of protruding edges front & back and measurements weren't going as easily as expected. You helped a lot and saved me from going nuts. Thanks again.
Awesome! I'm glad my video helped!!!
Gave me the confidence I needed to install it myself saved me $140 👌🏽
YESSSSS!!!! That's awesome to hear! I love helping people DIY!!!
Love that shirt. I am a veteran of maybe six microwaves installations over the years. All were outside venting. You did a great job. Well explained.
Haha yeah a friend of mine got it for me at the fair one year.

Nice job on the installation and the video. Will install the same appliance at my daughter's house tomorrow and having watched your installation it should go much smoother. Thanks again.

Too smooth and that made me nervous. Thanks again.
Dude, thank you so much for making this video. You saved me so much time installing one of these!
You're welcome! Glad it helped!
A wonderful resourceful video, it's narration and content was clear and concise. Thank you.
Nice tutorial young man. This will help many young folks and give them the confidence needed to tackle the job themselves!
Thank you :)
Did this installation yesterday of nearly the identical model -- your video is awesome and helped tremendously. Thank you!
That is exactly why I made this video! I'm so glad it was helpful!!!
This the best and most thorough one in making things clear. My package is missing some items
Thanks for the positive feedback! Hopefully you are able to get the missing pieces!
Excellent video! Getting ready to install Whirlpool microwave now. Your video is a big help.
awesome hope it went well
Thanks for doing this. I just installed one of these for my mom. The directions suck! You saved me a ton of time!
Awesome thanks for letting me know!!!
excellent video! thank for taking the time to help so many people. You are an excellent instructor. Again TY so much.

I don’t have the wall template so I NEEDED this video. You are appreciated 👏🏽
You’re welcome 😊
This video is great! My husband and I feel confident now that we can do this ourselves!
You can do it!
And we did this very evening! Thanks for all your help!!
Thanks for the comment on what drill bits to use, I am installing one tomorrow
Glad to help! You got this!!
Very through video. and very good that you gave the measurements also as I do not have the templates.
Thanks a lot!
awesome!glad it was helpful!
Saved my ass by posting this video. The template was NOT on paper like other identical models. I can’t believe they would have you cut it out of a cardboard box. Almost made too much Swiss cheese out of my cabinet to mount the upper bolts

Awesome! Thanks for the feedback!
Bro you are the best!! thanks so much, very informative just Installed the exact microwave in color black. Have a great Day.. to thumbs up!!
Thank you! 👍👍
@@BorsellinoHomeServices you betcha 😁
Thank you for the measurement info on where the bracket goes. We bought a used one and didn’t have the template!
AWESOME! Glad it helped!!
Hey thanks! This will help me install one today. I'd rather watch someone do it than read instructions. You did a very thorough job. If I had made a video it would been all jacked up with cussing and screwups lol.
yeah that's the magic of editing... you don't see my screwups unless I have bloopers at the end LMAO! 😂
Great tutorial! I am getting ready to install two of these Whirlpool microwaves. This was & will be extremely helpful to me. Thanks!
Awesome thanks for letting me know and hope it goes smoothly for you!

Great video. Installed this very model and it looks amazing. Very easy step by step instructions.
Thanks! Glad to hear it was helpful!
Man those instructions are confusing as HELL, glad there's videos out there to break it down.
happy to help!
Good Vid,,,,,,,,,,, Got mom a new whirlpool figured Id take a look, see if there was anything I didnt know, nothin to it, why not slide the stove out ? Bit easier access, stove slides easy.
just a thought,,,,,,,👍
i was just lazy lol
Thanks & appreciate your tutorial video.
You're very welcome!!!
I bought the same Whirlpool microwave before. It was the same model I bought to replace it so all We had to do was remove the old microwave and install the new one in it's place. Simple swap out.
Well that's convenient! 😆
@@BorsellinoHomeServices Well I'm all for convenience. lol
Great Job!
Thanks!
So I'm now second guessing if i bought the correct microwave for my setup.
i believe there are 3 options, top vent, back vent, and self recirculating vent. for the wall vent it's for microwaves that are on an exterior wall and you install the vent straight out the wall behind it
Thank you for this informative video.
You're very welcome! I make these to try and help as many people as I can!
But my only suggestion would be to put the bracket at the exact distance down from the cabinet that the instructions say, and it should work
Thanks! You a are a good instructor
You're welcome! Hope it helped!
Thank you so much for your help 😊
You're very welcome!!!
Outstanding job. Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback!!!
Thanks this was helpfull
Glad it helped!!!
4 years later. Is the microwave still working? My whirlpool only lasted 4 years then quit completely. I never opened the door without hitting stop first, so it's not that common problem. I junked it and left the space open for usefull shelving. Best decision ever.
Hmm would you like to make a $100.. lmao! Thanks for making the video. I was considering this microwave and found this!
well it's a great microwave! It's been installed for a while and no issues yet
Thanks for the video 👏🏼
you betcha!
Very helpful. Thank you!
You're welcome! Glad it helped!
2 questions:
Should I somehow remove this internal filter and clean it? It is not obvious just how to remove this filter without uninstalling the microwave.
If these holes are used for the recirculating vent configuration (which I am not configured for), can I simply tape over these holes to force more suction on the underside of the microwave?
Thanks in advance.
Honestly I don't know much about how they are build beyond this installation video. I'd say give it a shot! You can always take the tape off! And you'll find out pretty quickly if you start pulling it apart if there is a filter or not inside. Doesn't make sense to me that they would put a hidden filter though
Thanks! I'm almost there with mine, but was not sure if it mattered if the vent adapter opened to the back or front!
Totally does!! Depends where you're venting outside...
Thank you sir! This was very helpful!
Glad it helped!
Good job! Im on the fence on weather to do me or pay the man. Lol
it's pretty easy to do if you have the tools and are mechanically inclined!
THIS! This is exactly why I make these videos! I'm so happy that this was helpful for you!
As for the vent, I have no idea. Just make sure the airflow is going in the direction of your vent. You probably have it installed already though this comment was 6 days ago
U really helped us , thank u
You're very welcome!!!
Trying to install this on a concrete wall. Any tips?
I installed cabinets on a brick wall once and bought these big mollys meant for concrete and drilled holes and attached a wood board to the wall so I could attach the cabinets to that.
Can this unit be hard wired in? Just took out the old unit... there is no plug, just a wire coming out of the wall which was connected to the oven and then black taped into a bundle.
why not just install an outlet if you have wires there? Just need to shut the power off and install an old work box with an outlet
Putting in the same microwave but in black. Had to replace my original Whirlpool. Unfortunately, the bracket wasn't the same, so had to measure thrice to drill once.
I do hate my stud finder though
yeah I hate my studfinder too. I want to get a Walabot DIY have you seen them? They look amazing
Yeah now that you say that we did have to fight it in a little bit... We've been using it for a year now and it still works just fine
Do I need to cut the box out? I don't have an external vent. I'm trying to replace a different microwave that has the plug and screw holes.
cut the box out??
@@BorsellinoHomeServices The big area in the back that you cut from the cabinet for the vent.
Ooohh, We live in an old house as well, moved to current location in 1960. built in 1920-30's?? Patty
cool. thanks for the comment. hi patty!
Good job.
Thanks!!!
I would butt it to the frame not the plywood because that is where the microwave will sit, it doesn't fit up inside that frame
good job, big help
happy to help!
I had this model installed about 2 months ago, and a big let down is that the buttons on the display don't ever light up. We have to turn on the kitchen light to see the keypad. Odd that the display of the time is the only lit part of the entire keypad panel.
Thank youuuuu!!!$$$
How well does it work for venting, and how loud is it? Thx
it seems to work pretty good. i don't use it very often but when i do it definitely works. the HI setting is not terribly loud, but loud enough that I don't run it longer than I need to. I usually run it on LOW though and it's not bad and sometimes I forget to turn it off while I'm eating then I'm cleaning up dinner and realize the fan is still on
What happens if I never took off the temp covers @21:16 ?
if your microwave sticks out past the cabinet like mine does you can take them off after. but they shouldn't be blocked i believe that's for airflow venting
I don't know what gives.
ugh i hate it when they change stuff and it doesnt work!!!
You could try but I doubt it will be exactly the same. Although Maytag is owned by Whirlpool so hey, you never know! worth a shot!!!
So Joe was it interchangeable?
This was good, "Big Box" store wanted $170 for installation (recirculate only) ridiculous!
