    Will you kindly tell me as to why in your #6. Sentence "I can't remember my password" isn't an independent clause.? My gut feel says it can be a stand-alone sentence.

    • @LearnEnglishLab

      "I can't remember my password" by itself is an independent clause but when we put 'because' before it, it becomes dependent :)

    At 8:15 number6, Won't it become weird if i add another clause?
    Like you said, that this sentence has only one clause (Mr. Burns made a bad investment and last all his savings.) So what I'm gonna do is adding another clause, so it'll be Mr. Burns made a bad investment and last all his savings, and he lost his family.

    hi sir.which one is correct "no one is giving change for 2000rs or no one is giving change to 2000rs".

    • @LearnEnglishLab
      @LearnEnglishLab  8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hi Raja, 'change for' is correct. But that sentence sounds unnatural to me. I would say, "I can't get change for Rs. 2000 anywhere." This is more natural; also notice that we write 'Rs. 2000' (currency symbol always goes first). But if you write 'rupees' in the full form then '2000 rupees'. In both cases we read as "two thousand rupees".

    I have a question:
    u said there is no difference between 'however' and 'but' except from the fact that the former is more formal and needs a different punctuation pattern. Does it mean that when we have two clauses that contrast with each other we can use either one?
    That would be nice of u to anwser that.☺

    • @LearnEnglishLab
      @LearnEnglishLab  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rana, yes that's correct. Compare these sentences:
      1. I wanted to buy a green umbrella but I couldn't find one. - 'however' would sound awkward here because this is an informal sentence.
      2. It is generally believed that learning to speak a language fluently requires many years of diligent study. But some people disagree with this view.
      3. It is generally believed that learning to speak a language fluently requires many years of diligent study. However, some people disagree with this view. - Though this sentence means the same as the last one, it sounds a little more serious.
      4. It is generally believed that learning to speak a language fluently requires many years of diligent study. Some people, however, disagree with this view. - You cannot use 'but' here - only 'however' can occur in the middle like this.
      Hope that helps :)

    Hello sir... Thank you for such wonderful leacture...
    Sir, is there any rule to recognize subordinate conjunction vs conjuctive adverb?
    Thank you once again..
    Patiently waiting for your reply..😊

    • @LearnEnglishLab
      @LearnEnglishLab  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The difference is that a subordinating conjunction joins the dependent clause to an independent clause in the same sentence.
      But a clause with a conjunctive adverb is normally a different sentence altogether. The important thing is to use the two correctly (especially as regards punctuation), and you'll get that with practice.

    • @reenasharma2585
      @reenasharma2585 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Learn English Lab
      Thanks for your reply..but that was not my question..
      I was asking.. how many conjunctive adverbs are there? If you tell few conjunctive adverbs then it seems like subordinate conjunction.. so is there any way to recognize both of them?
      See I am not saying that I have to recognize them in the sentence..
      But actually at the time of writing...
      It seems littlebit confusing which word use after semicolon( ; ).. even coordinating conjunctions are few and easy to understand.. likewise I need some tricks to recognize adverbial conjunction as well as subordinate conjunctions too..
      Thank you sir...

      If you wish to learn grammar as a teacher, I would recommend getting a good teacher's grammar. A couple of good examples are The Teacher's Grammar of English from Cambridge and Grammar for English Teachers by Martin Parrott. Alternatively, you could get a learner's grammar (one made for ESL students) and this can also help get you up to speed with grammar terminology.

    Sir my most common confusion for 4 years is regarding participles and gerund. i.e., a boy was lying on the hammock reading a book. Now here what is reading ? How do we use it along with the main verb ‘was lying’ ?

    Can we use ; and , for all the Conjuctive adverbs? please suggest me.

    • @LearnEnglishLab
      @LearnEnglishLab  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but that's when you specifically want to use the conjunctive adverb as part of the same sentence. If you use a period (.) and comma (,) you are starting a new sentence. When you write, if you are not sure, just use the period and comma :)

    Sir, you are a great teacher.
    i have learned a lot from you.
    My query is that sometimes i find some sentences which i can not find so called english grammer books,futthermore Some sentences i find in Twitter or any social network news feed could not understand.
    hence it is very kind request to make video about some sentences which usually do not follow the grammer but do use a lot.
