I made one of those once. Called it Combat Conway. When a new cell is born, its either red or green depending on how many parents were of each color, and you could take turns setting down new cells.
I don't understand the amount of time it takes to create any of these "factories" or other large constructs. I tried recreating a single particle looping around a perimeter like one I saw, and couldn't figure it out. You have to be a hardcore geek to devote time and focus to this. Respect to that level of focus 👍

Also, the game of life is not very adapted to create "life" out of nowhere, but you can probably add different rules to make it behave more like that.

The only difference is that our red blood cells are cute waifus and our platelets are lolis. As you can see, that is infinitely superior to your normal human being.
With some of the elaborate devices on display here, I could very well imagine that at a sufficient degree of complexity and size, you could create a sort of lifeform-like thing, that has an outer layer, that defends it against intrusion, a means to propel itself in a controlled manner to chase other devices and even "devour" them.
I would love a multi-player game based on this. Just sending out gliders while you sit back with your friends like a bunch of generals watching a war happen beneath them.
I’m currently working on a game of life game that has two teams. Red and blue. You are able to create structures before starting. And after the battle begins you watch the teams destroy each other. :) Oh and also, it is going to be customizable! (Map size, speed of the game, etc... and a lot more features!)
1:32 really looks like an Atari game about a plane bombing somewhere under heavy AAA fire, and then exploding midair. A nice little detail is the first “bomb” hitting something before reaching the ground, and blowing up to shrapnels
This could be game. Like two players must prepare their defenses in a limited space and whoever gets all the initial pixels in their defenses misplaced will lose.

A lot of them were discovered by accident. Just by running huge random simulations and looking for cool stuff to show up
