Kung Lao's spin has armor, so in one match online, the opponent kept spamming projectiles with Sindel, so with the Sub-Zero kameo, I put on ice armor and spun my way across the stage. It was gimmicky and didn't do a lot of damage but it was kinda fun to use against them.
Kung Lao is good up close, but his biggest weakness is that none of his strings have great range, which will become a major problem once he faces the S tier characters in the game
Great video, but quick side note: Kung Lao isn’t the only one with a 6 frame punish. Liu Kang’a forward 1 is also a 6 frame move that can start off combos. Looks like the fire god didn’t leave his best bro hanging in the new timeline.
Kung laos spin is so underused. Its too good. The fact you can hold it down and move half screen is a plus. When timed right it gets me out of alot of situations, especially against meleenas rolls and tp kick, and smokes tp attacks
Kung Lao is sick. Using sonya kameo atm and on jump ins you can plink kameo into aerial 3,4 dive kick for a full juggle combo. He's got some relatively easy juggle combos with multiple kameos. Back 2,4 > jump 1,2,4 > kameo > jump 3,4 > enhanced dive kick for the bounce > 2 > shimmy.

Kung Lao is a character I’m interested in learning but I can’t help but feel like I’ll just want to go back to Mileena since her combos are burned into my brain and I don’t want to lose that muscle memory

I think Kung Lao is solid A/B tier. He suffers from stubby arms like Li Mei for the neutral game and down 2 but i really like Kung Lao this time around and you gave some excellent combo examples in the vid. Thanks for another great video underdawg o/
Kung Lao main here. I think the hit box on his back 1 could be tuned up a bit. His mid is good, but it's slower than other characters mids. He has all the tools needed to be a potential top tier, but lacks what the top tiers have. Also, it doesn't matter if he's got the best wake-up in the game if Baraka can still brake every characters armor with back 3.
Liu Kang also has 6 frame jab. And Liu's is much better cause you can cancel the second hit into launcher without meter (also first two hits without launcher are safe on block).
Liu Kang has a 6 frame mid that leads into combos. Lao has insane damage in this game but he can’t open opponent's to save his life. He depend on Kameos to either keep himself save or actually open opponents with a sneaky low (like Frost) his strike throw game is also pretty good but… eh, he is kinda wack in this game to me lol.
Yeah, he works pretty well with Lao or Frost overall. I tried Goro for a bit but many started reacting to his grab so I had to change the gameplan. But I still find his kit extremely underwhelming and just terrible overall. I’ll probably just switch to another character once I unlock his tower ending and see his lines in the Armageddon fight,
In mk11 Kung Lao was my main and I used to bully my friend with the Lao as he became known , I really enjoyed this video and will be punishing people with that 6 frame punch
Kungoro is a monstrosity. I thought cage/striker was the ultimate turn robber but this thing is insane. Air dive for mobility and almost no recovery, armored into combo, normal into flying kick into grab or overhead... even after labing it non stop I still get trampled by some new shennanigan 😂😂😂
Kung lao is good in this game, but most people who are kung lao loyalists have expressed concern or have entirely dropped the character due to his playstyle and moveset being nearly entirely different. I'd love to hear more voices beyond myself and Lao content creators.

I was wondering. Since Motaro can change your fatal blow, would that mean that with reiko you have a 50/50? If you do fatal blow it’s either a cammand grab or a punch.
reiko's fatal blow hits mid, so you have to jump regardless, but reiko's fatal blow already has a 50/50 in which he can do a mid command grab, or he can do an air grab.
@@backroomgaming3305 using Motaro gives you the ability to use Motaro to hit into fatal blow. When you use fatal blow if you press the kameo button then it won’t be your normal fatal blow.
I been playing a bit of Kung Lao today ( a few tower runs to get a feel for him as do all characters so I can use Shang Tsung better). He is less annoying to fight against that he was in 11 with less specials, no TP and slower attacks. But he is more fun for me to play.
He should definitely be buffed by at least a little, maybe making his spin useful or reducing the block disadvantage he has, because as it stands now, he's too much risk for too little rewards.

I honestly don’t like the tools they’ve taken away from him..I’ve mained Kung lao for the past 4 games hard and not having his Spin or teleport is very frustrating and a big enough change for us Kung users who’ve always rocked with him to truly say he’s BORING now, nothing stands out anymore with him. Not being able to downpoke into a spin combo hurts but I would accept him not having his pop up spin if he still had at the LEAST his teleport. It’s hard enough trying to get in to combo on this game with characters like Smoke being able to get a 45% combo off of pure teleports..so I know I’m not tripping I just miss the mobility aspect overall of his Character💯 now he’s much more grounded and super strategic with getting in combos or extending them, way less offensive rewards like before😒I’m done with him, he’s literally no fun anymore.
Kung Lao main in every mk I played and I got to say I disagree. I do miss the spin but teleport was worthless in mk11 so it hardly matters now. Most of his tricky mobility came from dive kick and it still does. He still has some of the coolest looking moves with the "shaolin flare" as I call it. Not only that but he still gets tons of damage from the right combos. He has a crazy good stagger with 21 that leaves him +3 and can lead into amazing combos with his exDB4 or DB4 kameo call. Not to mention he has to take zero offensive risk for 34-39%. Not crazy like Raiden but that is not no offensive reward. He's way more fun than mk11 at least because all that lao had for offensive pressure was his F1 stagger.
Please don't presume to think you speak for all of us. If you're finding boring, fine; I think he plays just as fine here and better than what he was in 11

I appreciate the changes, but yeah. Removing the low buzz and teleport sucks, as now he is way to easy to zone out. Plus his stubby ass buttons and lack of mix ups don’t help in making the character feel fun. Whenever you get a combo going it feels great as Lao damage is through the roof, but getting to open people up is what sucks about him now.
I haven’t played in a while, just got back from my trip to Mexico, but doesn’t that 8 trigrams have a hold X/triangle charge for a bigger punish? I know it has a pretty big hit box but it’s pretty deceptive.

When compared to characters like Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Raiden, Sub-Zero, and other characters that have ridiculous juggle capabilities, Kung Lao needs to be buffed to compete. They ruined kung lao for me in this game, getting rid of his iconic spin and his teleport just makes him not even the same character anymore. I would always main him but looks like I'll have to look at some other characters.

Lao isn’t necessarily good but he is cheap. He isn’t a top tier character but with goro he becomes one. Goro and him have perfect synergy.
