Well as said in the insta post, this technique is quite common in manga since they use the "liquid watercolor" type of watercolor and markers very often, normally watercolor is easier to lay tone over huge spaces and marker easier (also more transparent and faster drying) to darken values over small zones like under the nose or the chin. But the way you do it is of your own, and the piece is beautiful 👌✨
quick tip from a fellow marker artist! You don't wanna leave your markers standing in a vertical position, you wanna lay them flat , horizontally, to preserve them longer.
I do all kinds of mixed media to get the best of all worlds. Layer order and paper type or surface are key. Be careful of damaging materials if used in the ‘wrong’ order such as being careful about marker tips getting damaged. Marker and watercolour are more ‘bottom’ layers as very oily, waxy or powdery mediums damage marker tips. Also ensure watercolours and similar are completely dry before adding the marker to avoid damaging the art/surface. Being bound by ‘art rules’ as if they are ‘valid’ or ‘laws’ severely limits us! Use mixed media and have fun everyone!
This drawing is you all the way. The way you just went right in with your colors and mix media was awe inspiring. You even mention about the lack of planning you normally do on your work. In the End, I feel you have captured a much more organic you. The artwork is still all You, but the work shows your much more relaxed and spontaneous subject. There is no mistaking that this art is made by Chris Hong. I have always loved your style and subject matter. I knew you were much harder on yourself, and your art, then you deserved. I like this new you, I hope you are much happier now as well. Cheers from Michigan, USA. P.S. I am sad that I missed your art sale, I am a sub but somehow my Bell Icon was not on. I fixed that right away.
Yeah... the only problem with markers is that they are not good for display since the colors fade quite easily over a short time, so if you want to frame your original work and hang it on the wall it's highly possible the marker colors will fade fast so you will need to store your pieces very well and avoid exposure as much as you can. You can use the test sheet you made and see how fast the colors fade by leaving it out a couple of months and then go back and fill with the same colors next to the old ones and see how much they have faded.
I love how she looks like she's diving towards a light, surrounded by colorful noodle soup~ I feel like this averseness to mixed media is a bit of an art school thing. They do tend to teach you about how to preserve the image of your art for the longest time possible, and mixing mediums makes this really difficult. It also tends to go through one medium at a time, teaching you the ins and outs of it and holding on to that medium "purity" at all times. I grew up just throwing anything I had together on a page and only upon getting older and having more contact to art school people did that medium-purity snake it's way into my brain as well (except for artists with a passion for rl-3D, those throw any- and everything at a canvas of choice :'D). I do get that for an original-piece-art-market sticking to one older, tried and tested medium like oil, gouache or watercolor, is the best way to go but that's also a bit of an old-timey way of thinking about art, in my opinion. We live in times of vast opportunities with digital influences! Light fastness doesn't really matter anymore if you plan on making prints, you can make a perfect digital image of said hodge-podge piece and preserve it that way :D Paper? Medium? They don't have to perfectly go together anymore! Toxic paint can eat away at my piece and disintegrate it in a few weeks if I just want to make prints of it. I thought once that its a shame we artists don't get to sell originals using this way anymore but is that really necessary? We don't have to spend time and money on preservatives and protective coating anymore, no special sleeves or uv shields; and I think that's pretty great :) It all comes with it's pros and cons~
Your illustration came out amazing! I love seeing and hearing you talk about your process! 😀 Be a little careful with the layers however. Alcohol markers acts as a solvent and can pick up pigment from the watercolor layer and watercolor pigments can be damaging to your nib and will clog it over time depending on how much watercolor was laid down. Same thing with colored pencils (especially colored pencils). But with how light of a layer it was it shouldn't be a problem.
I've used watercolors and alcohol markers (specifically QoR and Copic) together before when making a drawing for my lil sis, and I really loved how it came out very vibrant and it gave it a really cute cartoony vibe. I also am in the mindset (or trying to be in some cases!) of "I bought this item, now I should use it", without being weighed down by what people may think of as the "proper" usage. Are supplies expensive? Yes. But that's even more reason to use them how you want, imo.
Amazing as always Chris! I really enjoy hearing you talk about your process, and yes I totally saw what you meant with the hat. I’m so enamored by the soft, dreamy, whimsical elements your pieces have.
So... this is my first time watching one of your videos and I have to say... my first tought was THIS IS A MASTERPIECE, (SHE OR HE) must have everything figured out. So... watching it and been able to see and hear you struggle with the same problems I have while drawing was amazing. It made me realize we all have this problems, and we can all be pretty insecure about our art. So I just have to say thank you for sharing how you truly feel in the process even thought you´re obiously an amazing artist ✨
Your videos are always so relaxing to watch and the art of course is great. You have a unique sense of color and a style that is really soft and moody at the same time, which gives an aura of nostalgia to a lot of your pieces. It's strangely comforting.
Oh! I’m really excited to see what you come up with. I love trying new mixed media combinations, and this is one I was recently trying to find some videos for on TH-cam to see how others were trying it. Looking forward to seeing how you decide to approach it.
I know it has been a while but could you answer a couple of questions. How long does Ohuhu markers last until you need refil? and how do you use? Only on final pieces or sketches?
@@lucianalarangeira7252 mine still work fine, 7 years later. I have yet to need to refill them. I use them in both sketchbooks and in finished art. I don't use them for big areas though, both because I want them to last a while, and because they tend to get a bit streaky if used for a big area
COOL BRO I am really impressed with your art, I definitely didn't ever think about combining watercolors with markers. New subscriber :) Loving your stuff, SO COOL
Really fun piece, Chris. If you're interested in lightfast marker options, I know Winsor & Newton, among others, make lightfast pigment watercolor markers that you can use in conjunction with quality color pencils and quality watercolors if you want all media you use to be lightfast for the longevity of a piece (for sale, etc.)
Was just about to leave this comment. Winsor and Newton"s are called Pigment Markers and I literally ordered a set yesterday, LOL! I use my Ohuhu's all the time, but when I heard that the Pigment Markers were lightfast I knew I wanted to try them. I reallllllllly hope they don't suck :D
@Chris Hong Art I just wana say I just happened to come across one of videos yesterday & have been binge watching ever since!! Lol..Ur work is Absolutely Stunning & Beautiful 😍💖👌🏽💥💯💯 & I'm loving the fact use so many different mediums * & u do so well in All of them!! Really Inspiring & Impressive work!! Keep up the Great work!!👏🏽👌🏽👍🏽💥💯💯💯
I haven’t watched your videos in awhile, and I see this is already old, but your voice over has improved from what I remember and you sound more confident, it’s nice! Great illustration, everything was very engaging
I feel like i need to improve on character poses and watercolor skills now. Your characters are so expressive and the watercolor with the markers looks amazing
I'm absolutely in love with your artwork! Thank you so much for sharing your art process. I've been experiencing art block and your videos always help me to get inspired 🖤
It wasn't until seeing Sophira Lou's lovely art and process that I realized you could mix watercolor and marker. Love the added texture with the pencils too
I am glad there's watercolor paper that takes well to alcohol markers. I've tried using them on some brands of watercolor paper and they usually don't do good IMO so I'll try the Legion paper.
Is more like the texture, with hotpress watercolor paper you can work mostly well with it, I use it because of the thickness (because normally watercolor paper is thick) and the smooth surface
Love uor approach, uor selfawerness, uor "toxicego"-less seeing of the work and the world--really like uor work, hope u will publish as many art books, as u can
this came out so cute and lovely! 😍 I've always wanted to get more into mix media so this is v inspiring... when I was first starting out with copics I bought a japanese copic book that had a tutorial for using copic with watercolour so I think it might at least be a common practice in japan!
Its not really an art sin. Whenever you use this mediums DO NOT start with makers please layer watercolors first to avoid destroying the maker and paper
i'm sorry if i cant buy your art book and your illustration, since we dont have enough money 🥲🥺 but i will always support you Chris in your every step of the way!!!❤️😊🥺
Just found your channel I love your art work! Do you only have your prints for sale every so often? Did the ones you had available during the time of this video sell out?
Her art reminds me spongebob where they got that paint on Mr. Krabs' dollar and spongebob covered it up with a bunch of paintings and one of them was a sad clown. I always wondered why someone would want a painting of a sad clown but I get it now.
It’s my understanding that you can have archival prints made? If you wanted to have the original colors preserved. I use all types of media as well but I’m not to the talent level of even considering showing others or even attempting to sell anything I’ve made! I love your art work, caught the video too late to get anything from your store I was bummed putting it mildly.

I think it was a mix of quinacridone yellow, naples yellow and the greens that I have... I'm constantly mixing lots of colours together so it's hard to say exactly what! >
the self imposed rule to only use watercolor because as an artist you feel like you should be able to do everything with one medium😂😂 im finally breaking that mindset too it’s really limited my pieces and made me feel like i was just bad at painting because i couldnt get my pieces to look how i wanted them to.
Love your work and love what you', te doing with the markers. It's a shame that you don't deliver to Portugal though. I tried to order at your site but it wasn't available. 😔
Nah, I see this mix media all the time. Chriz Oz Fulton(guy who wrote Hobo Heart Creepypasta) actually uses watercolor and copic for almost every piece. I see it a lot for people who are primarily marker artists for things like backgrounds and large areas, since it does mix well with practice and saves ink on pricey markers.
I’m not worried about the archival quality, you can always make prints, (but I wouldn’t sell the original.) I’m more worried about you ruining the nibs, especially since you used opaque, semi-opaque watercolors. The nibs are bound to pick up some pigment off the paper. Damn! You really need to do a masterclass video on COLOR 🌈 this looks awesome! Congrats
I've been using Ohuhu alcohol markers since 2016, and so far none of my oldest pieces done with Ohuhu have faded
I am impressed with the Ohuhu markers.

OMG I’m so hyped for this 😤🔥🥰
Why haven’t i found you before! Omg, you’re amazing! !!! The sketches in you’re sketchbook are awesome, and you’re are is just gorgeous! In awe....❤️

I watched the video to the end.
Missing u and ur art on TH-cam ♡

The watercolour police can take a day off and leave you do your illustration the way you like! It looks great!
The first one piece was simmilar to Sainer's paintings. (Sainer etam cru) love it girl!
Good haunting fun!!! Excellent job, guys!!!
YOur art is amazing, been following for so so so so long and Im always mesmerized
Faber-Castell PITT waterbased brush markers work great with watercolour.
I just pre-ordered your art book. Sooooo super excited!!!
I need drawing skills like you, so I think I'll be inspired by you in the future.
Looks great. You can spray it with a UV clear and it will hold up.
Very beautiful and cute!
The abstract shapes color looks like highlighers :)
Very interesting 🤔. Watercolor and alcohol markers. I must try.
I've mixed markers with watercolors once and wanting to try it more(to really see how it turns out) and it's nice to see another mind like mine! hah
I love your art so much
Honestly I never plan anything out, I have this blurry image that came to my minds eye and I just go for it.

no need to apologize!! Thank you kindly for supporting me

Amazing work! We should defo have you on the podcast!
as someone who often uses watercolor as a base, and then uses marker and pencil over it, I can assure you that you aren't alone:)

This is lovely
Love it 😊
Amazing drawing
Actually, I think Sakuem do use watercolor with alcohol markers. Both your style and hers are very colorful ❤️.
Me encanta su voz tantísimo que yo solamente paso por aquí para escucharla.
I love that Shell Pink shade. What was the muted green watercolor used on the background?
I think it was a mix of quinacridone yellow, naples yellow and the greens that I have... I'm constantly mixing lots of colours together so it's hard to say exactly what! >
It's not a sin. I'd like to see all mediums that just fit in in one art piece!

i know it's a shame, i hope to be able to in the future though! shipping from canada currently is very limited and expensive T0T
Hi, Chris. I have a question for a Q&A if you do one. . . how do you define a mistake?
Eee! I'm not too late lol
Haven't watched but I know it's gonna be amazing!
I'm gonna up your view duration lol ❤
Copic is really missing out on not sponsoring you, this is great!
haha I wish!! thank you :)
Is there a sealant you can use to protect the colors if you’d want to? Otherwise, you could always make a digital version of it.
I should look into it..! thanks!
Beautiful,nice✌️😃.......
I Love, thanx for the video

Yeah, markers and watercolor are a pop combo in certain art communities
had no clue! never paid too close attention i guess XD;;
Looks like James Jean ☺️
I choose chaos-I always mix watercolor and markers. 😂😂
When’s your next video x love your art
❤❤❤
wish i could get half as good at rendering/ coloring stuff >.
I not recomend to use markers with WaterColor paper, because the texture and cotton of the water color paper can damage the tip and suck the ink or alcohol of the marker, but if you are not afraid of that go on mixing medias
I use it, but I guess is because the one I use is hotpress and doesn't have cotton xd
💕
Are these watercolor markers or alcohol ones? Thanks!
they are alcohol markers! :)
How do Chinese fans buy your book? Especially want
ITS A SIN?? I use marker and watercolour together all the time 🗿
When I saw the last video you u did where u said u weren't gonna swatch your alcohol markers I actually said out loud to myself, she's gonna get tired of that very quickly.. lol. I'm glad u decided to swatch them. I also haven't seen any1 else using alcohol markers with watercolor. How you gonna advertise a closed shop 😭😭😭
haha my bad, I changed the URL to my shop so I forgot to update it, thanks for bringing it to my attention! Can't go update ALL the videos with my old url in it lol but the one in this video is updated!
the shapes looks like feminine pads
Me
i hope you are aware that these markers are not lightfast and that the colors will change over time.
She's definitely aware, it's in the closing section of the video. I'm assuming the primary purpose of these kinds of illustrations will be photo digitized and turned into prints.
