I started with Gouache and dove right into a difficult project. I took on a 24 page children’s book that paid nothing! I was dumb and agreed to split the book profits 50/50 with the author. Little did I know each piece would take over 70 hours and that gouache was such a difficult medium. Not only that, the story took place in an insanely detailed swamp.
Sadly, the book was never published. It was the author’s job to ‘sell’ it to a publisher and he got demoralized after only a few rejection letters. I believe the amount of investment each of us had was too unbalanced. It had only taken him a few hours to write, but it had taken me hundreds of hours to paint. He had too little of himself invested in it to really sell it.
At least I have those pieces in my portfolio, but I admit, I never did return to Gouache and that was almost fifteen years ago.

Whippo Morpha Chris Hong’s art has inspired me to master gouache. I used to do well with acrylic then got used to digital art and then got used to alcohol based markers. Trying to not let the stressful time of the last time I painted stop me from painting again. I hope the OP will give gouache another try. Like I’m giving painting another try. After I committed to be underpaid for a painting for an event when I could barely afford to paint it. But I did it anyways I hate seeing pictures of that painting now lol

I relate to this whole video when you talk about putting pressure on yourself and worrying about showing an amazing WIP then not making a WOW finished. About not painting from joy and rather feeling as if it's a chore. Part of me is happy to pressure myself because, there are too many artists out there that they just draw from joy and don't challenge or pressure themselves much and their style/skill doesn't evolve for a long long time. I don't want to be one of those artists. But I get SO ANGRY when a piece that should take me like 30mins-1hr takes me days, weeks, or months because I have to train my eye to study somethings for the piece or I didn't start the piece in the proper workflow and jammed myself.
Keep making videos like this Chris! I'm a self taught artist with no art friends and these make me so happy to hear a hard-working, developing, struggling, artist to relate to.

"there are too many artists out there that they just draw from joy and don't challenge or pressure themselves much and their style/skill doesn't evolve for a long long time. " Totally agree, I'm one of those ! I think it's because when we see your work we are like "I will never reach that level" so we just enjoy ourselves, but I'm glad great artists continue to improve, it's inspiring !
That said, I tkink being always on pressure to make a great art isn't productive, I have a friend who's really good (far better than me) but when we worked together he didn't send us any sketch because "it isn't good enough" while I did a lot ; it wasn't great but people liked it, and at least, the work was done ; It's difficult to find the good balance between challenging and enjoyement :/
Sorry for bad english, have a nice day :)

@@unkykun Your English is fine and your artistic experiences ring true. Keep up the good work and the good fight. Artists who claim it all came easy to them are either liars or bad artists. @dynomax101 5 ปีที่แล้ว

#Melon Dick What you say is truth and your experiences are par for the course with creative people. IMO, those "easy" pieces that should be done in a flash but take tectonic plate slowness to do are also among the best teachers you can have. I know this from experience. I certainly have had loads of pieces fight me tooth and nail--and lose. I won, and that's a feeling all artists worth their salt should know.

Love how you shared your process! When I first started painting I wanted to throw every piece away halfway through. It took me awhile to realize that if you trust the process it will work for you. Sometimes the very best thing you can do is walk away from a painting and then come back at a later date. It's easy to miss the forest for the trees. Also, drying makes such a difference in how things sort of start to blend together and become more cohesive. So good to learn from "mistakes". Way to persevere!

I honestly really enjoyed this process video because it resonates with so many artistic frustrations that people go through. So thank you for showing the truth and comforting us at the same time to keep going despite difficulty ❤️

A fantastic painter that I follow, who is also fluent in digital art, said that the digital process is “less inspiring”. That’s no slight to digital artists-there’s work in that too. But traditional art will really push you, and that’s why I think it’s important to keep it alive. The gouache piece came out beautiful.

Chris!!! Look what you made!!! Its so cute!! I definitely understand the stress and anxiety you can place on yourself when you're trying to finish a piece, especially when trying to teach. But you stuck through it, you got out of your own way, and finished an adorable and very complex piece of art for your portfolio. I love the additions you made to liven it up. They made the piece. I know it's a struggle, but try not to be so hard on yourself. There is no time table when creating something to be enjoyed. Social media is a tool that can quickly turn a passion into something you might despise. Remember to always see it as a tool to get your message across; the message you originally wanted to share. It'll help you find the sun through the clouds. Again, great job and I (and I'm sure everyone else) am anxiously waiting to see what other wonderful pieces you come up with (without the added pressure to perform.) :)

nothing better to improve your state of mind and ease the self-critique than resting. That really allows your creativity to flow. As an artist myself, I find resting to really allow that intuitive creativity to flow; by resting I mean a relaxed state of mind. I find that meditating has the same effect as going on holiday. I have actually had the same experience with some of my paintings and later on when i was relaxed i found them quite enjoyable to work with. The end result is really beautiful.

Whether I am working with textiles or clay, some projects just flow, others just need more time to cook, or be set aside until I can see the final image clear. Doesn't help though, when you want it finished and the muse is not playing fair. Lol. I love the world you create in your paintings.

It's so comforting to see a well-established artist struggles. Social media makes everything looks easy peasy, and I often feel like a failure when I can't succeed in something right away. This is a good reminder that everyone struggles and it takes a lot of effort to get to the next level. I also assumed you finish all your illustrations within a few hours. XD

i work with gouache daily and i totally understand what youre talking about with how hard it can be to work with gouache sometimes. you really gotta power through pieces when working with it because it wont look good for a while, but the more you add to it and work with the paint the better the piece gets. you did an amazing job with this piece, brilliant work

Found your channel from Instagram, love it. I suggest in the future keeping in mind that even the other artists that follow you wouldn't see the flaws that you see- and the customers who buy your work often don't care. The point of buying prints of traditional paintings is that human touch, little imperfections and piles of paint that make the painting feel more 'substantial' then a digital work. At lest that's what I look for. Anyways this was a helpful video, thanks for posting it!

Yeah taking a break from a project can be really benefitting. Usually for me it could just be a 5 min smoke break because my brain is starting to get so tired from staring at the thing for hours. But yeah going away for the weekend is good too because then you really see it with fresh eyes. BTW is it possible to use water colors and guache together? But Also I'm the type of person that can sometimes take a break from a project for months and then do smaller things inbetween and come back so I guess everyone has their creative process to make it the best it can be.

Thank you for sharing your view. I literally can’t sleep due to stress nowadays cause I have to do the final project which I’m spending months on and even declined works to work on it. I think I share some of your frustration, that I don’t deliver for something I’m spending so much time for, there is no money, maybe all of this is for nothing, there is no joy in painting. Know that an artist I admired also felt similar make me feel less lonely

You made a very good job of describing the inner workings of the creative process! The end result is great too. Gouache is notoriously hard to work with and hardly anybody teaches it well these days so most people are having to rediscover it and try and grow a technique from there. I have to say your brush technique is excellent, no muddy areas at all! Sometimes you just have to step back and let mind process things for a while especially with such an intense and detailed process. Then you can look at things with fresh eyes, but I guess that is what you captured so well in your narrative. Lovely work well done. Hope you will persevere with gouache and maybe look at the different options available because you have already gone a long way further than most, as your illustration is so full of life.
