Yikes, it's hard to be a composer without knowing music theory. Don't get me wrong, he knows some stuff, but music theory is the framework of music, the first and last thing that comes in music development. It's hard to make a review without it.

@@jameswoodland2719 anecdotal but I know several people who can compose multiple instruments and they barely know any music theory. music theory is great because it codifies and standardizes what we know from musical experience, but many people learn by ear or are surrounded by musicians their whole life and can pick up and understand which notes relate to each other and which ones are dissonant without understanding the how of it all. lots of trial and error can get a person to be able to play or write in key without understanding what the key even is.

I was so dissapointed when I got Persona 5 Royal and the battle music is new when you ambush. And you ambush like 80-90% of the time. So you only hear last surprise when you don't ambush and its not a boss fight :/

1:19:19 to answer your question about Japanese musicians diving deeper into genres, yes I agree that Japanese musicians are not afraid to blur genres/lines. They love to experiment with so many compositions, drawing lots of inspirations from what’s already existing, and play around with their craft.

Small note: Japanese composers seem to not really care about boundaries on musical genres. They seem to just take what they want from or even just make a new song on an genre deliberately recalling the inspiration.

You should absolutely try Journey. It would be a great primer for you to get used to modern video game controls, and it tells a very affective, emotional story without any words or text. It takes about two hours to run through start to finish, but there's no need to pay through it non stop, either.

      @Marcharound ปีที่แล้ว +10

@@cheetored20 It’s a game where you, as you may expect, walk a journey. Most of it is walking around and seeing beautiful vistas. Despite this, it has a really good story without even having dialogue in any form. One of the stand-out features is that it connects you with random people online for co-op. The game manages to actually make you become attached to your companion even when you have no way to communicate. It’s the pinnacle of quality over quantity, as it is a great but quite short experience. The soundtrack is also top-notch, being the first video game to have its soundtrack nominated for a grammy (in the “Best Soundtrack for Visual Media” category).
Overall, I’d highly recommend it, but would wait for a sale if you value length in a game. I beat it in only 2 hours, though I’ve replayed it multiple times since.

I love "Rivers in the Desert" in context of the game. It's played during a boss battle which has a couple phases. During the first set, all you hear is an instrumental. And it sounds really dark, and evil and foreboding. But when you start to push back, and the boss is almost on his last legs, the vocals kick in, and the lyrics are brighter, more hopeful than the music behind it. That's when the entire tone of the song changes. It's not the boss's theme. It's yours.
"A river in a dry land
The last ace in a lost hand
When the hope of new beginnings burned our feet
    Now we need it!
A heartbeat for a tin man
An oasis in a singed land
Remind us what we're here for
    Creating new life!
    Creating rivers in the desert!"

The arranger for One-Winged Angel: Rebirth is Nishiki Yasunori (Octopath Traveler). He totally rearranged the original Uematsu Nobuo composition in Phase 1, kept the orchestral version in Phase 2 (originally arranged I think by Hamaguchi Shirō), and added the Whisper's Theme by Hamauzu Masashi into the final phase. (This last one is the short section with the gasping chorus and the sense of falling around 29:42). This track is basically both a rethinking and a remaking of the original classic.

Not sure if someone has already mentioned it or not, but for Hades, it would be lovely to see reactions to either "In the Blood" or "Good riddance", the songs. Preferably both, of course! These are very emotional and vastly different to the OST featured in this video. Hades soundtrack mostly serves to naturally flow with the gameplay, setting mood and making it distinctive, but these two songs stand out on their own in their tender, melancholic beauty and I consider them both incredibly touching. The game came in 1994, and the soundtrack is over 3 hours long. The game takes anywhere from 30 to 80 hours to play through for regular people... It even has a full on opera scene. But the fantastic thing is that the game came on a cartridge that was 2.14 megabytes big. That is literally the size of a 1 minute and 29 second MP3 at 192 kbps sample rate.

I Was Born for This is a gorgeous song! The lyrics are all pulled from different works of history and literature around the world, all in the original languages-Latin for The Aeneid, Old English for Beowulf, Greek for The Iliad, French for Joan of Arc, and Japanese for Matsuo Basho-all about journeys (naturally) and farewells. The whole crux of the song is the French lyric, from which the song takes its title: "Do not pity me, I was born for this."

If you're interested in the composing process of Mick Gordon, be sure to check out his speech at GDC. Also GeoffPlaysGuitar really mastered replicating his style and he goes in deep detail showing his process of composing.

As a "branching out" idea, I'd even say it'd be great to react to (at least parts of) the GDC talk itself. Since Geebz likes his production details, and what Mick's describing is definitely not… usual :)

Thing i love about Mick Gordon is he always finds a way to mix up his tracks so that they dont feel too repetitive or predictable. When it throws you off its just the most fun thing haha

I'm shocked that nobody in chat pointed out that the lyrics to One Winged Angel are from "O Fortuna", Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. Many advanced Latin students would learn it, and it's a very popular classical piece of music.

Dude, you’re so awesome! Thank you for recognizing gaming as an art form. Im a full grown millennial (32) whose parents never recognized gaming beyond Tetris, it’s great seeing an older generation who knows nothing about it try to learn about it and teach us his views on his knowledge of the art in front of us. You deserve all the success you receive and some!

I saw "Dancing Mad" and I said 'lol be ready to be there for like 16 minutes" and then you were like "this is 17 minutes long" and I died of giggles. Kefka is just extra like that. He really said "my theme song is gonna be 1/4th of an hour long and what are you gonna do about it? nothing. you're gonna dance mad. enjoy." and we DID. xD

I just discovered your channel here today and watched this stream on twitch.
Somebody's probably told you this already, but just in case they haven't, one of my favourite things about One Winged Angel is that the Latin lyrics are all random phrases from Carmina Burana. Very cool inspiration for a modern masterpiece!

Thought I'd mention since you've listened to a couple Journey songs already. Austin Wintory (Journey's composer) has a video with the complete soundtrack and text commentary on his channel. You might find his comments on developing for a video game interesting. There's also a video of the soundtrack re-orchestrated for the anniversary of the game.

Oh man Geebz, first you reacted to the types of metal music I like. Then you started reacting to anime- and video game music which I love but which I also share a passion for with my friends, so now I can share your videos with them as well... And now you've started streaming on twitch which I like using and I've always thought it would be a great platform for the things you do and to expand this concept of music reacting that you're evolving and making more and more interesting as this journey continues. You're checking all the boxes man, love it! Keep it going Geebz!

Not only is it Latin, all the lyrics in One Winged Angel besides Sephiroth's name are chopped from various parts of Carmina Burana.
And to clarify, Vocaloid is a program for synthesizing vocals, and also what an individual voice package and the fictional character representing it is called. Ex: 'Hatsune Miku is a vocaloid whose vocals you can compose with Vocaloid.' Think "Vocal Droid." Languages like you were referring to are called constructed languages or conlangs.

Sick stream man, love your takes! At 52:15, you mentioned the very delicate hi hat sounds from the drumming. As someone who has played through the game and listened to this very track a LOT, I had never ever noticed that before and yet you picked up on it immediately! Loved the stream and just as much that you uploaded it here!
EDIT: Don't think too much of people that are unspeakably fast to point out stuff like "how do you not know this or that", there's bound to come such people even if you bring it up. I completely understand why you want to make it as obvious as possible, that you're only human like the rest of us - but people will come and go regardless. You're a very sincere and nice guy for bringing it up, and that by itself is enough!
