Proto punk meets glam rock. The Dolls were a truly unique groundbreaking band. They lived like they looked unfortunately and flamed out like a shooting star.
The Dolls were one of those bands that were more historically significant for who (and how many) they inspired than by how many records they sold or how many years they toured.
I dont care if they ate the best band live to me they were absolutely groundbreaking and had a great sound. And went on and inspired so many great bands for a reason. The Dolls and The Heartbreakers still get played religiously.
Sure did. Peter Criss saw the Dolls live and told Paul and Gene "we need to do that!." You can still find that early Kiss picture where they literally look exactly like the Dolls.
the dolls were big fans of the 60s girl group the shangri las, their second album was produced by producer and song writer of the shangri las, shadow morton.
He claims not to see the resemblance! But he is, all the Dolls were fans, David (the singer) and Johnny (the guitarist with the black top) were often compared to Mick & Keef. 🤘🩷
But it was a strange twist of fate. The NY Dolls emerged as copyists of the Stones, at least somewhat. Then while they failed commercially in the US, they still had a huge impact on the music scene in the UK. Then the late 70s Stones ended up copying the NY Dolls copying the Stones.
I don’t think the band as a whole copied the Stones, but David’s performance and moves were totally copied from Mick…zero doubt about it. I still enjoy the Dolls…they had their own niche and David’s copy was an homage to Mick, imo.
That bandage-cast that bass player Arthur "Killer" Kane is wearing was due to his girlfriend attempting to cut off his thumb during an argument. Not that anyone could tell the difference in his playing
Sure did lol he loved the dolls. But it wasn't just him. Kiss, Aerosmith, Ramones, Hanoi Rocks, and every single glam metal band after jacked everything from the Dolls lol
America's greatest group. The world's still not ready for them - it now knows what to make of the surliness of the Velvets and the Stooges, but the Doll's added joie de vivre confuses journalists. Plus Mercury has been useless in keeping their early work available.
That was roadie Peter Jordan. He was actually playing the live bass. You may have noticed the cast on Arthur Kane's left hand. Kane's crazy jealous girlfriend tried to cut his thumb off while he was asleep. They had Jordan filling in live while Arthur pantomimed on this performance. Jordan would become the bass player when the original band broke up the first time in 1975.
Kane couldn't really play due to his injury, that's Peter Jordan their roadie that also played bass when Arthur couldn't but hey Killer Kane needs to be up there too!
No they didn’t. Sylvain, the guitarist in leopard print, worked as a taxi driver for a decade. Arthur, the bassist with blond hair, was briefly homeless and ended up broke and working for the Mormon church. As Sylvain said, influence doesn’t cash a check. 🤘🩷
David was dressing like that since middle school, before the Stones made it in the US. His influences were American rock n rollers, Esquerita, Eddie Cochran, Charles Brown, Gary Glitter. Plus even what he did copy, the two were friends and everyone takes inspiration somewhere. Should the Dolls sue the Ramones for copying their sound? No! Just use logic
One of those "art forms" regarding which some paeudo-intellectual will give you three hours of instruction as to why you should appreciate it. Like Warhol's soup can bit.
That is why they were cool . They didn't care what people thought of them and by the way they never tuned there guitars ,duly noted. The probably was they there 10 years ahead of there time. Let's say they came out in the early 80's then they would have fit right in.
WRONG WRONG WRONG...What came after/went into pet rocks? NADA. From this came Glam / Punk / DIY / Post-punk / etc. (Okay, don't tell me you OWNED a pet rock -- which would explain everything.)
Proto punk meets glam rock. The Dolls were a truly unique groundbreaking band. They lived like they looked unfortunately and flamed out like a shooting star.
Bassist Arthur "Killer" Kane became a Mormon and worked in the church's genealogy records department after the demise of The Dolls.

True they didn’t all end up like Johnny Thunders.
meets Little Richard
proto punk, not a real thing. stop thinking wikipedia is a serious source

Here’s a cheat sheet for you brother. The term “Proto punk” has been used for decades in musical literature. Long before there was the internet.
Amusing when you remember 14 years later he was covering ‘Hot Hot Hot’ as Buster Poindexter.
😂I used to like old Buster Poindexter back in the 80s!
And the ghost of Christmas past!
I didn't know he was Buster Poindexter. I just learned something today. Yay!🎉
not really all that amusibg actually
Saw him with the New York Dolls at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel in Providence, RI. They were awesome!
Love the Dolls, the culture needed them right then, still didn't know what to make of it all.
The stunned looks on the audiences’ faces tells it all
The quality is amazing
Probably the best house chores song ever recorded.
The Sonics, The MC5, The Stooges ,The New York Dolls , The Ramones , The most influential bands of the Punk Rock scene

Johnny Thunders, Jerry Nolan, Arthur "Killer" Kane and Sylvain Sylvain.
Simply put; phucking brilliant!...

For good reason.

Every glam band in the 80s can thank these guys it started right here
I was too young to stay up and watch these guys and too metal for glam rock by the 80's.
The NY Dolls' first album is the greatest LP in rock history.
Johnny Thunders is an underrated gem of classic rock
Not for those who know!
Most of the crowd are clueless as were later that day at The Real Don Steele Show 🤨🧐🤔🤯then... came Punk and 'Hair' Metal 😉
I remember watching this the night it aired 🤜💕

These guys were phenomenal. Too bad heroin got in the way. Their first two albums are great. These guys had women falling all over them.
Yea because they stuck there feet out and trip them
Brilliant
In a just world, the Dolls would’ve been bigger than KISS.
Miss these dolls!!

N'importe quoi...
He sure did. I saw that bass player…yeah
Hard to believe glam arrived so shortly after hippie music, it's the polar opposite.
I think hippies opened up for men to dress more feminine than before. Many glam artists started out as hippies as well like Bowie and Bolan.
The true first punk band
The Dolls were so bad, they were good. And, they gave us a peek at what was to come...
David is the last man standing, R.I.P to the rest of the lads.
Calling Michael Jagger! You are requested on stage one.
Yeah, you don't think the Stones didn't learn a thing or two from the Dolls? Like how to be more like the Stones again.
Perfection.

Who was the guy playing guitar behind Kane?

I remember Peter. Worked at Bleecker Bob's and had his own band, Stumblebunny. The 1975 Dolls were fun, saw them at Max's, Tony Machine on drums.
To think OCS actually borrowed from this tune for "The Circle". The Dolls influence was at least 3 decades deep.
This children is called real rock and roll
SO PLEASE DONT YOU ASK ME IF I LOVVVEEE YAA
Too harsh on my ears as a pre-teen, but LUV the 'sound' now!!!

Crucial performance
Как это слушалось в СССР в 79!
Proto-punk at its finest!
That was every bit as punk as the Ramones - maybe more.
Du vrai rock !
le Rock n' Roll était leur vie.
Two bass players, interesting. That's Arthur Kane with the black Rickenbacker, who's the guy with the Thunderbird?
Peter Jordan. Kane’s gf had stabbed him in the wrist and it was in a cast and he couldn’t play
I was a little kid and remember my mom watching this
Saw these guys 2009 Royal Leamington Spa
No you didn`t
Is it me or did the Strokes borrow from the dolls!???
Does anyone know why there is another person behind Arthur playing bass?
Kane couldn't really play due to his injury, that's Peter Jordan their roadie that also played bass when Arthur couldn't but hey Killer Kane needs to be up there too!
This isn't our parents Alice Cooper version of a song named Trash!

Excellence
The Rolling Stones were a big influence to punk rock, musically and aesthetically...
Which then influenced the Stones by the late 70s.
Is JT scatting?
He's just doing what he did on the record, "singing" "Tra-tra-tra-tra-trash"!
When New York was interesting.
British Rock n Roll 1973. Mott the Hopple Great Band should have been Bigger
They laughed all the way to the bank.
No they didn’t. Sylvain, the guitarist in leopard print, worked as a taxi driver for a decade. Arthur, the bassist with blond hair, was briefly homeless and ended up broke and working for the Mormon church. As Sylvain said, influence doesn’t cash a check. 🤘🩷
To quote Bill Murray from the 1988 Yuletide classic, “Scrooged” which also starred Buster Poindexter… “oh my gosh, does that suck”
Mick Jagger should have copyrighted his "sthick" and then he could have sued for copyright infringement.
Yea cause jagger was wholly original 🙄
If that was the case, James Brown should have sued Jagger.
They all copy something. None of them are 100% original.
If Jagger & Richards got sued everytime they “borrowed” something, they’d have to legally call themselves a cover band.
PASS!
This is awful
That was part of their appeal. But, their songs shine through, and the whole thing sounds like a glorious mess.
This is pretty bad lol 😂
These guys were trash
This is terrible. Not hard to see why they weren't around for long.
