Can you imagine a 10 y/o boy shopping at KMart with his dad and they go by the music department and there is a huge display for the new KISS Alive! album. The boy has no idea who KISS is, what KISS is or how KISS is, he just knows he has to have this album and listen to it ASAP. He begs his dad to buy it for him and somehow after some back and forth, his dad agrees and puts the album in the shopping cart. All the boy is thinking about is getting home and playing the album on his dad's awesome stereo system in their finished basement. When they get home, the dad asks his older teenage daughter to setup the record for her brother. So they go downstairs, then the boy takes the plastic off to find that the album opens up and there are 2 records in there with letters from each member of KISS in the gatefold. The boy takes out the first record and hands it to his sister while staring intently at the album. She puts it on side A and drops the needle...and the boy's mind is blown away and he's hooked. That boy was me and that's a true story. This was 1975 and KISS looked and rock musicians in the future and as a young kid, you could not resist KISS.

A lot of that in those days- Tween kids of the boomers, trying to find their own thing and there's Kiss all over late night. All 6 of us (sibs + 3 friends) stayed up past midnight the year before- their US TV debut. Had no prior knowledge, wondered if they were for real, or gimmick. Not only was the music GREAT (as well as all 3 vocals) the whole look and heat of it practically radiated through the TV. Instant heroes!

Looking back now, (born in 1968), and IMO KISS was a unique band that whether they were trying to or not, catered to boys like me that were born between 1960 and 1970. If you were a strong fan of R&R they were a stepping stone, but that said, they did put on one hell of a show, and they "were" a hard working band, as stated by Getty Lee, who with RUSH toured together for a good part of the early to mid 70s. I couldn't tell you what albums they did after the solo ones and Dynasty 79/80, but I did finally get to see them in the year 2000 and was pleasantly surprised at how tight they still were and the kick ass high energy show they could still put on. They were also probably the best marketers of their merchandise of "any" band of their era, so hats off to those 4 guys. My GF and I watched Ace spill out of a Sunset Bl hotel in 1998, before Gene got out of a limo and helped him into it. Was 11am and they were getting some award that night. (True Story) and we didn't even know who that long haired guy was until Gene got out of the car to help him.

I think Paul Stanley said that during this time,They would call their record label after a gig about their money, and the phone would be disconnected because the label was struggling like them!! You can hear it in their sound. They sounded better when they were struggling.
