I second the recommendation for Ædnan: a beautiful, complex family saga written in such spare prose that it’s like scraps carried by the wind. I haven’t read any of the others on your list and so many of them sound good! I suppose I am most drawn to Before the Queen Falls Asleep.
Fantastic list of books Scott! I want to read the book club pick but I fear I am so overcommitted now - having some serious FOMO on that one. Really looking to this long list (and not being able to get any of the books on it 😝)
I appreciate the sincerity of your description of The Dear Ones, you really captured the gravity and importance of the issue. FYI, it's Moldova, not Moldovia😅
Awesome list! I’m still in the process of editing my prediction video but we only have two of the same picks. Although I love the Women’s Prize, the International Booker is so much harder to guess and I love it for that! All the books that you predicted sound like books I want to read. And I’m not going to lie, I would even read a book about a malignant tuna as long as it was a translated piece of fiction.
Going on a bit of a tangent, but did you see the Stella longlist this year includes a translated fiction title Hospital by Sanya Rushdie. Just interesting.
That’s at least 13 essential books, even if the judges pick none of them! I do love this prize and kind on envy the judges having to read 150 translated books to arrive at their longlist.
I know, right?! I mean, the regular Booker doesn't but I care much less about that. At least the Orwell Prizes wait until late May, but then they only give us 3-4 weeks to read, because apparently all prizes must be awarded in the month June 🙄
Aednan sounds like such a me book plus it’s on Everand. I need to read it!! Great picks as always although now I have even more books on my radar 😅 I am sure how many of the Booker International I will get to but I am always curious to see what makes it. 📚
Yiur list is outstanding, there are brilliant books. But in my case I'd like to mention The singularity by Balsam Karam. I love how the writer style and the way to write about the feeling that a person experiences when a beloved person is missing.
I'm not going to try to predict anything here. I'd be happy with this list. Or, maybe not happy exactly because some of them look pretty hard on the emotional state 😅 But after watching a @RoroReads review I'm really curious about The Most Secret Memory of Men by Mohamed Mbougar Sarr - translated from French by Lara Vergnaud. I'd like to see that on the longlist because it would make it more likely that I'll get around to reading it 😂
Oh I didn’t realize Kibogo was eligible! I loved it though!
i'm glad yo ended on a light note! so so much talent in this world..we are so lucky.

Sounds like something for me.
Can’t wait to see what you pick to read and review. You Dreamed of Empires is on my TBR.

Was just planning to read My Men. Don’t forget Mohamed Mbougar Sarr. Need to read My Work.
I honestly think you’ve got at least 5-6 books right.
Great predictions! I’m impressed with the judges this year and looking forward to the Longlist!

My Men sounds fantastic!!! I will have to look that one up.

The accuracy on your comment about the short time between longlist and shortlist. Why are they hurting us?

Why! Why does every prize have to begin in March?!?! Happy to see Kibogo on your list

There is the Carol Shields List this week too!

I read pink slime late last year and LOVED it. Doubt it’ll be longlisted, but it fits the “parenthood” theme in a way.

I didn't like the singularity when I read it last month. Isn't memorable. Fragmented. No love for the characters. Not for me.
