With Wandering Stars I agree with your assessment on his choice to have so much of the novel about a school shooting, but just one small step forward I’d say this: As an American I often hear when we talk about the “first” masa shooting, or the numbers, and this crushing phenomenon, that these aren’t really the first, the first are what was done to the indigenous people, the highest numbers were what was done to them, how this issue of gun violence has been prevalent way before. I haven’t read the book yet, but I would imagine that conversation piece that I often see inspired that choice. And it absolutely breaks my heart thinking of any indigenous person also seeing that.

Great selection of books. You've really sold Esme Lennox to me.

Great recommendations as always Scott. The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox is a favourite of mine. A book with a similar premise is
    The Secret Scriptures
    It’s set in Ireland.

Oh yes, I read these two novels around the same time, made me really think about how women have been controlled in the past.

Thanks for the O'Farrell review. I'm slowing making my way through her backlist and was deciding which one to pick up next. Now I know. Great books and reviews as always. Annie Bot also peaked my interest. Great job Scott.

    Great reviews as always.
Bummer to hear that Memory Piece wasn’t anything special. Same with The Blueprint. 😢
I keep eyeballing Redwood Court. I love the cover of it so much.
Feast has been added to the TBR. I laughed when you talked about Aussies living abroad. In my travels, I ran into sooo many Australians.
Glad to hear Wandering Stars was good. I enjoyed There There, so I’ve been looking forward to it.
Ahh Shmutz. I’m so sad that I missed the group chat for it. I’m hoping to still read it. It sounds really unique and interesting.
Las Madres sounds good. RE: Puerto Rico becoming a state. It is the logical solution, but then the government and massive corporations wouldn’t be able to exploit it as easily. As is, they’re not allowed to vote in our elections or really affect any positive change for the island. This leaves the island unprotected in a lot of cases.
I just picked up a copy of Annie Bot, so I’m very excited to get into it.
Added Cry The Beloved Country and Esme Lennox to my library list. Both sound great.

I've been saved by Australians while traveling more than once! Mr. Rogers always said "look for the helpers." My adult variation is "look for the Aussies." I was in Budapest alone many years ago, when I was studying for a semester in Cracow, Poland. I did a homestay, like AirBnB before that was officially a thing. Train pulled into the station, I hopped off and a swarm of Hungarians converged upon me to offer me a place to stay. It was fine at first, but I left the next morning to see the sights, and when I went back mid-day they wouldn't let me in! I was terrified. My passport was in there, everything. They did let me back in at night - they just did not want me there during the day. So I spent the rest of that trip keeping myself busy and much of that entailed drinking with Australians. I ended up seeing very little of Budapest, which makes me sad now. I've had a soft spot for Australians ever since, though.

You might disagree with me on The Blueprint, I know we don't disagree often, but you definitely have more love for sci-fi, fantasy and dystopian than me.
Shmutz is a weird one that's for sure.
We Aussies are like an international rash, once a few of us arrive at a location we're really hard to get rid of.

The way you feel about Cloud Atlas is actually how I feel about David Mitchell's other book The Bone Clocks, which I hated. But Cloud Atlas is one of my favorite books of all time

Ooh I have been waiting for reviews on anniebot and I have seen them being mostly positive, yours included! It's on my tbr wishlist and probably the book I most want to read out of this list here. In other words, which entirely does not relate to this video, I'm reading Maame at the moment.

Annie Bot is excellent. You will enjoy it, even if its not quite your typical thing, it's not not your thing and it's just done so well.

Maggie O'Farrell is one of my favourite writers for the sheer pleasure of reading and I very much enjoyed The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox. I read Wandering Stars and enjoyed it, although it took me a little while to get into it. I didn't realise it was a sequel/prequel so possibly that's why. Perhaps I'll go back and read There There.

Interesting, I think I need to pick up The Hummingbird effect.
I thought I'd read Cry The Beloved Country when I was a kid, I know I had an abridged copy back then but can't for the life of me remember it.
    Great Reviews Scott.
I'm onto the 2024 Miles Franklin longlist now, will be getting what I can from The local Library.

I am always terribly afraid when I see a book I really liked in your preview images, won't lie. I am relieved to see that Las Madres came in at least in the middle! Re: should PR be a state...not from the island, but been trying to learn a lot more about it this past couple years... on the basis of that I'd say yes and no...there are islanders who are so fiercely against it on principle and some who are like YES.
One big problem is that with as little funding/support they actually get from the mainland, all attempts so far to gain more autonomy have been plagued by realy terrible management/ embellishment. So they're at that awkward 'not quite there to stand on their own two feet' stage that unfortunately is an excuse the US has used A LOT in its history to keep control. Another matter stateside is political when it comes to how many representative votes each state gets. And if we increase the size of the states then they also have to address the long running debate about if we should make washington d.c. it's own little recognized place. Personally I would suggest first maybe amending the fact that many don't have to pay federal income tax which is the reason residents are denied social security benefits. (which is rich 'cause I think they still have to pay payroll tax, which is what SSI comes from here) With the poverty rates I doubt many residents would have to pay in. And those who do are probably not native/corporations. Now, I'm not a financial expert but you're not telling me there isn't some rich company who would cause a fuss.
Back to book things- I just finished that author's earlier work. While it didn't stick with me as much, it deals heavily with being and staying in an abusive relationship, the toxic traits just accepted as 'natural', and a really striking moment of Puerto Ricans as viewed by other latinx communities.
If living abroad for a year is the mos aussie thing ever, that means I can now tempt my bestie to come this way....but his gal already did that in London so ...what exactly are the numbers on repetition? XD
Happily one of my libraries FINALLY got Annie Bot...the waitlist is just insane. Oops.
I've heard about Cry for ages but never really looked into it. thanks for such a great insight.

I liked Las Madras, I think I gave it 4 stars.
It sounds like the issues are even more complex with PR and the US than I realised. There's a real lack of people first government at the moment, worldwide.
Aussies love to travel, I know people who basically spent their entire 20's working for 6 months in Australia, then travelling for 6 months.

@@GunpowderFictionPlot ONe of my last random tidbits of info t hat I heard about oh..probably a year ago that doesn't get a lot of attention is because of public funding issues and all the damage from hurricanes and covid leaving school systems crippled, the entire island now only has a SINGLE school district. (there are just under 17,000 in the US) and on mailand us 36% of 3rd graders tested a-okay in maths, 26% in 8th....on the island numbers were so low it averaged to zero. Add to that language barriers vs. standardize testing (spanish is first language for most) 1% of third graders met reading level standards.
