In Norway, the knitting curse is not a thing! If you knit your s/o a sweater, it’s a sign that you’re serious now

I think technically the curse has to do with how long it takes to knit a sweater specifically. Basically that if you start knitting an SO a sweater they will break up with you before/when you finish it. So on the bright side as long you aren't making a sweater you're theoretically fine. Tho sometimes everything feels like it takes so long it should apply regardless.

i’ve just started knitting but immediately wanted to make everything ever for my bf. his birthday is in the spring so i’m trying to do my research early for a good pattern. thankfully he’ll gleefully wear anything i make, so it’s a matter of picking what i think he’ll look cute in. i’m with you on the cardigans!! so underrated and fashionable on guys! 😭

Four designers for men off the top of my head: Jared Flood, Martin Storey (new Rowan book dedicated to men, but I like some of his older designs, too), Maxim Cyr (Max the Knitter of Les Garçons, Canadian!) and DesignsbyDelz (also Canadian, Max’s partner Vince and the designer of the popular Montrealer hoodie).

I did a lot of research for my boyfriend sweater: 1) Daddy-son sweater is really cool and has great fit for men! (I gave up cuz I couldn't get the gauge). For a raglan sweater, 2) flax by tincan knit looks good for both men and women.
    3) Zipper sweater looks great for men's gift. I know 2 who knitted for husband and you can even searn on TH-cam, there are korean youtubers who knit for their boyfriends. Matchy ones would be cute. I am Korean and the couples who wear everything matchy are only 20s on a trip! Haha. It looks nice and stylish if you wear two things in different colour or different design and same colour. Maybe I will make two for me and my bf one day. I am going to make Sweater No. 14, boyfriend fit sweater for my boyfriend! Still waiting for yarn to arrive, but it's lunar new year holiday.
Love your colourful cardigan here :) Please keeup us updated.

As someone who is of the male variety I appreciate you making this video and can 100% confirm that I have almost always made sweater patterns for women and have to make slight changes and they just don't fit the same, mainly in the bust and the length. I am almost done with my first actual mens sweater and can confirm it makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE. It fits my body so much better and has the perfect amount of ease in the chest and back. DROPS design has so many amazing mens patterns on their website and they are ALL FREE! Thanks for doing a little video on mens patterns. love ya girl.

6:01 i'm a guy who knits and it's surprisingly a lot more complicated than that! it isn't just about increasing the size of things, but also how the sizing works, and often the way things are styled. for example, most sweaters go by chest measurements. on most women, your chest is the widest part of the torso, but this isn't true for many men. my chest is 36in, which is pretty small for women's sizes but very average for men's; so knitting a women's sweater with a 36in chest may fit over that part, but will be tight around the arms, shoulders, and waist, speaking from experience. plus a lot of sweaters are designed with _necklines_ more often seen in women's clothing (like boat necks) which isn't even something you think about until you're making your own clothes. basically all of the garments i've made i've had to come up with my own designs entirely for the sweater/tee itself, and just figure out how to accommodate the cables/colorwork/whatever it is from the og pattern i liked. i really wish there were more people out there making more masculine options for knitting patterns tbh

That cardigan is beautiful! I get why at a glance it might not be everyone's taste, but when you're deep in love with fiber arts you start to appreciate the unusual.
Is it alpaca do you think? Peru is known for alpaca. I have a trip scheduled there next summer and I hope to get enough yarn to knit a cardigan as a souvenir!
Speaking of, for male cardigans (and knitwear in general) I know a lot of guys look to Kurt Cobain for inspiration. The dude wore whatever he found at thrift shops, some of it was knitwear! He's worn cardigans and a pretty famous red and black striped sweater.

Maybe start with the scarves and slippers and hat and socks first and then make a sweater? See if you can lure him in lol. Sweaters are a lot of work and money If hes not into it or won’t take care of them properly. So a test round! I think matching is cute as long as it’s low key. Can’t wait to see what you’ll come up with and see how the slippers come along. I was tempted to make those too but the felting made me nervous too.

Lmao “the knitting curse” certainly didn’t happen to me. I knit my boyfriend a blanket big enough to cover a full size, maybe queen size bed. Didn’t break up but after the first week of him having it it’s been crumpled up on his closet floor and has been for over two years😒 I think that’s almost break-up worthy lol
We are expecting a baby girl at the end of May❤️
Also, I love that sweater!!!!!! My family makes fun of me all the time for loving sweaters like the one you’re wearing. I think what’s considered “fugly” is the new cute lmao
About men’s knitwear- there are patterns, they’re just hard to find. I suggest finding some male knitting podcasters to follow, a lot of them mostly do accessories but here and there I’ve seen some make sweaters. Needles at the Ready are my personal favorite guys to watch, I can’t remember what pattern they followed but a while back they each made an awesome hoodie, I think they also host men’s knit night from time to time and possibly have a Ravelry page dedicated to men. Not 100% sure but I recommend them, they’re so delightful to watch

I surprised my boyfriend with socks for Christmas and he absolutely loves them, but it was so hard making them without having him testing if they’d fit in between cause it was supposed to be a surprise. Never doing that again :D but he wears them almost every day at home and it’s just so cute.

Boyfriend sweater suggestions - my first was basic crew neck with 4 different stitch panels. Then he got an Aran style cardigan with inset pockets. I obviously never heard of the BF curse because we are 34 years together. The card I fell apart after 3 decades so I am making The Jones by tin can knits. Himself would never wear a card I but he wore the first one til it was no more. You can always try the tuffy boot socks . Himself loves his.

    hey,

    periodt.
by the way, to make a womens pattern more masculine, leave out any darts or shaping (that isnt the neckline) below the armpits, elongate the body and arms. if the shoulders run sloped, straighten them out a bit to make them more squared off. Just overall like a lil twinkie with arms, that's what men are. also, make sure to use his arm measurements when picking the size, cause they're not in proportion to womens sizing.

  • @illyriancrybaby

My favourite is 2.5mm but it’s rlly up to you! When looking for sock yarn make sure there is some nylon in it or else it will break easier and superwash so you can put it in the washing machine! (I go for 80% merino superwash and 20% nylon)

I have a problem. I've knitted a sweater for my bf, it was wool acrylic blend and the sweater itself - not the best :D he never wears it sadly, but the main reason is, that he says it's too hot, he wears mostly cotton sweatshirts. Whould cotton sweater look good, or maybe from merino-cotton blend? I don't know, but if it will have the smallest fuzz or fluf - he won't wear it, I know.

This is totally my opinion, but I think that if you want to knit for someone else, they should have input on what you are making. You shouldn't knit something for them that isn't their style because they will never wear it. Then you will feel hurt they will never wear it and that is how the sweater curse happens. I've never knit my husband a sweater because he won't wear it and doesn't wear many sweaters in general. However, he loves my handknit socks and appreciates the scarves I've made for him over the years.
