I’m so envious of the yarns available near you. I would go to a yarn shop every day if I could just to see the wonderful yarns. I live in rural U.S. Not many yarns available here. We have to order online and it gets expensive. Your knitting is beautiful. Thank you for your video.
Thanks so much for watching, Linda! I completely understand. Where I live there is one great yarn store I love to go to. But I many of the yarns you saw in this video I had to order online, too. And it's often so tough to choose the right color.
Thank you! You described everything beautifully and very helpful information for me as a new knitter. I am exploring garment knitting now and have trouble finding affordable quality yarns. So glad to have found you! Beautiful work and your color choices and design are so beautiful as well. ❤
Really enjoyed this podcast…living in the US, most of the yarn names I’m familiar with but have not used. I do have a sweater quantity of Loch Lomomd I’m really looking forward to trying now. You are an amazing knitter & designer.
Thanks so much! That's wonderful to hear! 🥰 I am not good at crochet - I always have trouble counting my stitches in crochet, so I really admire all your talented crocheter out there.
It was lovely to see your video, I can never figure out how much yarn you need for a sweater, talking about the quality of different yarns was nice! Loved the designs of your sweaters as well 😍
Oh great! I had my eyes on the Loch Lomond yarn for a few years now. Thanks for confirming it is nice to wear and work with. Lucky to be living in Germany too! 😄
If I had to choose only one yarn for the rest of my life (praying that that'll never happen 😅) it would be Holst Garn Coast. I find it so so wonderful and would be able to knit both summer and winter garments, and I like the colour range
I haven't knit anything other than a swatch with the Supersoft yet. So the jury's still out on that one for me.but absolutely agree with you that you can't judge it before it been knit and washed/ blocked
Thank you so much for sharing your extensive bank of knowledge. Hugely appreciated. I plan on researching all the yarns you described. One of my favorite yarns is Drops AIR blown yarn. If you’re not familiar with it, it is a unique experience. It is wool blown into a woven tube, not spun. I made a cable sweater, even with this lofty yarn, the definition is beautiful. Also I love your designs and your knitting is beautiful.
Thanks for sharing, Carry! :) I have heard a lot about Drops Air - both good and bad. Sounds like you were happy with the result you got. That's wonderful! I heard other knitters say, that the yarn did not hold up very well and that the items they made from Drops Air quickly lost shape and pilled a lot. I'd appreciate if you let me know about your experience after you have worn your cable sweater for a while - that would be very interesting to me. Thanks! :)
I have heard a lot of good things about Cascade 220, but haven't tried it myself yet. Do you know whether it is superwash? I found different information about that on the internet and now I am not quite sure if it is or not. 🤣
@@herbgarden.knitwear , I believe it is. I have been using it for years and find it to be one of the best bargains available in the U.S. I've also been knitting with Holst yarns for a long time. I always hold Supersoft double and and l line of Holst Titicaca to make a heavier fabric.
Another great episode, Hanna! I love the summer tee you are wearing and I am looking forward to it's release🥰 If I could only knit with one yarn for the rest of my life I think it must be Rauma Finull. It's wonderful norweigan wool. The color range is huge. It's perfect for colorwork because it's so forgiving. One of my favourite yarns🙂 Hope you have beautiful spring days☀️
Thank you so much for shring, Anne! :) I have used Rauma Finull for my Chainmail Slipover! You are right the color range is wonderful! :) Have a wonderful day and thanks for watching!
What a great video! I totally agree on the Loch Lomond and the Line, such great yarns. I personally don't enjoy Holst Supersoft, but I think I might have knitted it too tightly. I would loooove to see the video about German handdyers ☺️ Liebe Grüße aus Würzburg!
Thanks for the lovely comment, Nina! :) I totally understand that Holst Supersoft is not be everybodys favorite. That's okay. :) Thanks for the feedback on the video about German hand-dyers. I appreciate it. Herzliche Grüße aus Bremen, Hanna
Thanks! I am happy that you like it. :) Sorry, but I have no plans to release a pattern for this sweater at the moment. There are too many other patterns that I want to bring out into the world.
Wow, you make some beautiful sweaters and I’m impressed with your knitting overall!! Loved learning about your favorite yarns. Makes me wish I lived in Europe. I never get enough yarn and love learning about it. Thank you! ❤❤❤
This is the first time I have seen one of your videos. I am so glad you came up in my feed today and I have subscribed to your channel because I want to see more! Thank you for showing us such affordable, yet quality yarns. Before this video, the only yarns I was familiar with were the Sandnes Garn Line, the BC Garn Loch Lomond, and the Ístex Plötulopi. I am amazed at how reasonably priced these yarns are. I live in the U.S., so I will have to research where I can obtain these yarns and how much they will cost me! I am amazed at how in expensively you can make a sweater using as yarn as a cardigan. Because of how enthusiastic you were about the yarn, I am really hoping I can find the Holst Supersoft. Because I had never seen your videos before, I didn’t even realize that you were not just a knitter, but a designer! I love your patterns. And how nice that so many of the pieces that you shared were knit up in the blue color of these various yarns. That is one of the colors that I also gravitate towards, so I could really visualize how these sweaters, as well as the yarns, could work for me. I have a backlog of projects that I already have planned (and I already have purchased the yarn for them), but as soon as I see daylight, I look forward to purchasing several of your patterns and knitting them up for myself. You intrigued me with the yarn you used for the socks. I am just beginning to knit socks, and I was led to believe that you must have nylon in the yarn in order for the sock to have any longevity. I had always thought that making a wool-only sock would always lead to disappointment because the heels would certainly wear out. You may have convinced me that this is not at all true. We shall see. Hanna, it was so nice to discover your channel, and I look forward to viewing your other videos and podcasts. BTW, my granddaughter shares your name, but she spells it Hannah. ❤🧶🐾
Dear Mikki, thanks so much for the lovely comment! I am very happy that you found my channel and this video was inspiring to you. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that you'll find some Holst Supersoft for a reasonable price where you live in the U.S. I really hope you'll like it just as much as I do. 🙂 Regarding the Mondim sock yarn: I do feel that a sock with nylon in it does hold up a little better, but this nylon-free sock yarn is softer and perfect for indoor socks that you wear next to skin. I hope this helps! Warm regards, Hanna
Thank you so much for this overview of different yarns. I just started my research for getting into knitting and I found your video to be very helpful.
My Mondim socks wear out too fast but while they last they’re my favorite feeling socks. I have about 8 different skeins I’m probably going to make hats or something else with them. I do love the yarn though.
Thanks for sharing! ❤️ So far, my Mondim socks are holding up fine - but they are only about 5 months old now, so time will tell. I really want to make a sweater out of Mondim someday, too. I think that would be lovely.
Thank you, this is such a great video, I loved seeing all of your knits and thoughts on yarns. My favorite yarn right now is Hedgehog Fibers Merino Cashmere, it's just so lovely and the colorways so interesting and beautiful. But, I must try these recommendations and your patterns!
Your video was super helpful. I am traveling to Germany soon and will shop for the cotton merino and others for sure! I also love Line and just finished Le Knit peacock tee in it. Beautiful!
I have been looking at the Holst super soft online, but up until now have not been brave enough to buy it sight unseen. Thanks for the recommendation and especially for the warning about how well it washes up. I might have bought it and never knitted it up, if I thought it was terribly rough. Much appreciated.
I love all your knits so much. They are just gorgeous! I bought 9 skeins of Loch Lomand in Paris for a souvenir. Seven skeins magenta and 2 skeins pink. I am sensitive to wool so I am thinking of a large shawl. I love what you made with it. Love the tweedy texture!
I have used Tynn Line and Holst Garn Supersoft and love them both a lot. Tynn Line splits easily though. I would love to try the BC Garn Loch Lomond. I love woolly wool !!! Thanks you so much for all your suggestions.
Yay! That's wonderful to hear! Thank you so much for watching, Thomas! I hope you'll like the Icelandic wool just as much as I do. Greetings from Northern Germany to Vienna! 👋
what a lovely overview. I've only tried the holst supersoft (together with a mohair) of these yarns and loved it so much. I would love to try the line and the austerman merino cotton later this year or next year, thanks for your overview
I loved seeing all of the European yarns. I love rustic and tweedy yarns like you had here. My favorite yarn back when I knit a lot is no longer made, but I would go for Harrisville Tweed or Green Mountain Spinnery yarn here in the US. I love woolenspun wool of all types. I'd love to try some unspun yarn.
Thank you for the suggestions! I'm only just starting to learn knitting but my local stores carry acrylic mostly, I will definitely research your recommendations ❤
I am very happy that you like it, Arianna. 🥰 Right not, I do not plan to release it in the near future as I need to figure out a solution for the neckline first. But I might get back to it some day.
Thank you so much for such informative video. I have worked with plotulopi and holst supersoft. Austermann I tried their silk mohair and found it very soft. I would love to try Erika design highland wools after watching this. I have knitted with Jamieson and smith 2 ply jumper weight and love the stitch definition and the fact that it does not pill much.
This was a very interesting podcast!. I live in the US and I have found two good sources for Sandnes Garn and British wools. I think it’s helpful to think about the costs and quality of the yarns as well as how they perform when knitting and wearing. Thanks for sharing information podcasts!!
Thank you for your thoughts on these yarns! I have recently moved to Europe to live so it's great to know what I should try, the yarn options here can be overwhelming. I love the top you are wearing too. Looking forward to the pattern!
I'm knitting with Plötulopi while watching this, with an order of Holst Supersoft on the way 😄 But I have to say, Plötulopi is very scratchy (haven't washed it yet, I hope it will get softer). But I recently tried Manchelopis after it was mentioned in another podcast, it is organic wool from Spanish Manchego sheep. It is MUCH softer than Plötulopi and around 8 EUR / 100g in a German online shop ;) but the colour variety is not very big yet.
🤣How wonderful! We seem to share our yarn taste. Yes, Plötulopi will definitely get softer after washing! I haven't tried Manchelopi yet, but I heard several people say that it is softer than Plötulopi. I must admit that I really don't mind rustic yarns though.
Currently I love my John Arbon Exmoor socks! But I want to knit with many more yarns before I make a lifetime decision. By the way, John Arbon yarns are also available from the german handdyer Bohei yarn.
Thank you, Karen! I am happy that you like them. 🥰 Some designs have been released since the video went live (e.g. the Poise Sweater) and for some others I have no plans to write up a pattern (yet). If you would like to keep up to date about my releases, then please feel free to subscribe to my newsletter: www.herbgardenknitwear.com/newsletter.html ❤️
I love the video and the yarns. I am very interested in the brioche cardigan pattern that you made with Plutolopi. It is wonderful. I love plutolopi yarn. When do you plan on releasing the pattern?
Thank you! I am happy that you like it. ❤️ I haven't decided yet if and when I want to publish the Plötulopi cardigan. But if I do, I will let you know.
I really love drops yarn. I look for the ones that are 100% alpaca or merino, usually I get the puna one. they have decent colour range, but most of all it's incredibly cheap for being 100% alpaca wool
Thanks for sharing, Lea! 🙂 I have worked with Drops yarn, too. Some of their bases I really enjoyed (e.g. Drops Flora or Drops Karisma) und other I did not like at all (e.g. Soft Tweed). And to be honest, I always worry a little if their yarn might be a little too cheap and wonder how it is produced. 🧐
Thanks for asking, Chynna! The test knit still runs till March 15th. The tee will probably be released around end of March / beginning of April 2023. 🙂
Thank you so much! I am currently knitting a fair isle sweater in Holst and it is IS super stiff and rough. I’m glad to know it will soften. Also what color is that blue in holst it’s gorgeous! Thank you again, enjoyed very much ❤
Don't worry, it will definitely get softer after washing and also while wearing. 🙂 The color appear more blue-ish on camera. It is actually a dark purple. The color is called "purple haze". Let me know how you like your sweater when it's done. ❤️
Dear Hanna, when will you release the pattern of the Fiber artist sweater? I would love to knit it in the yarn and the color you suggest here. Thanks for a very interesting video, its my first time visiting. I'm from Norway and share your oppinion on Line and tynn line as well. :)
Thank you so much for watching, Marit! It means a lot. ❤️I am very happy that you like the Fiber Artist Sweater. 🥰 Right not, I do not plan to release it in the near future as I need to figure out a solution for the neckline first. But I might get back to it some day. Greetings from Northern Germany to Norway!
Really a lovely review! Just have a question, but could you please add the information on your approximate size? Maybe I missed it when you said it but that would be helpful for the sweaters and socks just to estimate how much yarn I would need for my size based on that. Thanks!
Hi i followed u from my gaming channel (tanysims)😂 and this one too(tahani_crafts) i realy think knitting is harder then crochet 😂😂so u are super creative love your sweaters all beutiful 🎉great work ❤also nice to know about knew yarns and qualities❤
I wanted the Loch Lomond but I'm not sure I would say it's budget friendly. Not where I live in USA unfortunately. Depending on where you buy it and the color you want I've seen shops selling them for 14$ usd. So for a sweater we are looking at hand dyed prices.
It is crazy how much prices can vary from one country to another, isn't it?! I am sorry that you would have to pay twice the price than what it costs here. 😞
Hi Debbie, that depends on what you would like to make with it. For a sweater, I like to knit it with needles 4 mm to 4.5 mm. For a hat or mittens, I'd choose a smaller needle like 3.5 mm. I hope this helps!
That is wonderful to hear, Emma! Right now I have a lot of other designs / patterns planned, but I will definitely keep you updated should I start to prepare the release of the Plötulopi Sweater.
hello Hanna ! I really love knitting and would like to get into working in this area, may you give me some advice about how to work in this area? I'm not major in knitting. Sincere thanks!
Hi Xueyu, I am sorry, but I don't think I am much of help when it comes to this topic. I wish I could work in the knitting industry, too, but it's very difficult to get a job in this field that pays enough to pay the bills. I only design aside from my actual job and in my free time. It's not how I make a living. I am sorry, that I cannot be of more help. I hope you'll find the information you are looking for. Warm regards, Hanna
No, I don't feel like my knits made from Sandnes Line have grown after washing. In my experience the yarn holds its shape beautifully and it doesn't pill either. My tees all still look brand new. I hope this helps!
@@herbgarden.knitwear yes it helps alot. I nade a tee my petite knit and was windering what i have to expect, when i wash it. But i used tynn line. Im almost finishing it
Hi i followed u from my gaming channel (tanysims)😂 and this one too my crochet channel(tahani_crafts) i realy think knitting is harder then crochet 😂😂so u are super creative love your sweaters all beutiful 🎉🎉🎉great work ❤❤❤also nice to know about knew yarns and qualities❤
If you refer to blocking as in pinning your knits to a mat, then the answer is definitely no. Actually you don't need to do this for most knits on the first wash either. At the end of episode 8 I talk in length about my advice for blocking. If you want to know more about how I block my knits and also about common misconceptions when it comes to blocking, then please check it out. ❤️
My guess would be that the spinning oil was included in the calculation beforehand and that the stated yardage is correct. But of course I don't know for sure. 🤷♀️
It might be helpful if you actually mention what is your size ie height and bust as that helps other knitters gauge the yarn to their body size for value
I know it's been a while, but I've just stumbled upon your channel today. I did want to perhaps spur some thought about organic yarns. If you desire organic products for personal reasons, this wouldn't apply. But if you use organic yarns for environmental reasons, it may be better not to. Organic farming has a much lower yield per acre compared to conventional farming, thus requiring greater destruction of natural habitats in order to produce a similar amount of product. Just a thought.
Thanks for sharing, Virginia! Yes, I read about that, too. It's a very difficult topic in my opinion and it's so hard to make the right choices as a consumer. Organic (animal) farming is supposed to produce more CO² than converntional farming, while conventional farming is more harmful when it come to perserving biodiversity. Organic farming surely isn't perfect, but I feel there is a lot of room to grow. Whereas we already know that we cannot continue to do traditional farming as we did because it is too harmful. 😞 How do you go about this? How do you decide which yarn to buy and which not?
@herbgarden.knitwear Yes, big fields of monocultures is terrible for the environment. But organic farming doesn’t escape the monoculture effect, either. It’s the same in that respect. Because of that, it’s less harmful overall to go with a process that produces higher yield per acre so as to need less land devoted to farming overall.
Your knitting is amazing!!!! I enjoyed seeing your beautiful sweaters and hearing about the beautiful yarns💗🧶
Thank you so much! That is wonderful to hear! ❤️
Your English is wonderful!!

I agree, I would love to knit something similar
I also am a big fan of the brioche cardigan. Please write it up - if you need a test knitter I am willing.

First time finding your channel. I am a fan! I will definitely give the Icelandic wool a try. Sending greetings from Vienna!!
Yay! That's wonderful to hear! Thank you so much for watching, Thomas! I hope you'll like the Icelandic wool just as much as I do. Greetings from Northern Germany to Vienna! 👋
So interesting, thank you
That is wonderful to hear! Thanks for watching, Sarah!
What is the name of this shawl? I love your presentation thank you
It's the Savoring Shawl: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/savoring-shawl 🙂
I am happy that you enjoyed it, Alberta! Thanks for watching!
great video! thanks
Thank you very much! I am happy that you enjoyed it.
what a lovely overview. I've only tried the holst supersoft (together with a mohair) of these yarns and loved it so much. I would love to try the line and the austerman merino cotton later this year or next year, thanks for your overview
You are very welcome, dear Delphine! Thanks so much for being one of my returning viewers! It means a lot! ❤️
Thanks for the recommendations, Susinok! 🙂 I hope you'll enjoy unspun yarn just as much as I do.
Your sweaters are beautiful!
Thank you so much, Jeannette! ❤️ That means a lot to me.
Thank you for the suggestions! I'm only just starting to learn knitting but my local stores carry acrylic mostly, I will definitely research your recommendations ❤
That is wonderful to hear! Thanks for watching, Karen! ❤️
Oh God your not released pattern with BC yarn Is lovely ❤ when Will you release the pattern? I Need it😅❤😂
I am very happy that you like it, Arianna.
Thanks for the lovely comment, Rana! ❤️ I'd love to try Jamieson And Smith one day. I've heard so many good things about it.
This was a very interesting podcast!. I live in the US and I have found two good sources for Sandnes Garn and British wools. I think it’s helpful to think about the costs and quality of the yarns as well as how they perform when knitting and wearing. Thanks for sharing information podcasts!!
You are very welcome! Thanks for watching, Ruth! ❤️
Thank you for your thoughts on these yarns! I have recently moved to Europe to live so it's great to know what I should try, the yarn options here can be overwhelming. I love the top you are wearing too. Looking forward to the pattern!
Thank you so much! 🥰 With a little luck the test knit can start very soon.
I'm knitting with Plötulopi while watching this, with an order of Holst Supersoft on the way 😄
But I have to say, Plötulopi is very scratchy (haven't washed it yet, I hope it will get softer).
Oh, that's interesting! Thanks for letting me know, Frieda! ❤️
I love the designs and colors you chose. Will you be texting the patterns? You are a good knitter.
Thank you, Karen! I am happy that you like them. 🥰 Some designs have been released since the video went live (e.g. the Poise Sweater) and for some others I have no plans to write up a pattern (yet). If you would like to keep up to date about my releases, then please feel free to subscribe to my newsletter:

Hello! Any update on when the pattern for the tee you're wearing will be available? I absolutely love it. Thank you. :)
Thanks!
Sure! I have a bust circumference of about 95-97 cm and european shoe size 38/39. I hope this helps! :) What yarn(s) are you planning to use?
Your Blue Gemstone is beautiful! Is it mostly garter stitch?
No, it's reverse Stockinette, so you purl on one row and then knit on the other.
That’s because of the currency conversion.
Hello! I was looking at the Loch Lomond yarn and wondered what gauge you prefer with this yarn? Thank you!
Hi Debbie,
that depends on what you would like to make with it. For a sweater, I like to knit it with needles 4 mm to 4.5 mm. For a hat or mittens, I'd choose a smaller needle like 3.5 mm. I hope this helps!
@@herbgarden.knitwear Thanks very much!
Han a p.ease re.ease the pattern for your plotulopi sweater. I have 5 plates of grey and would be interested in that pattern
Hi Xueyu,
I am sorry, but I don't think I am much of help when it comes to this topic. I wish I could work in the knitting industry, too, but it's very difficult to get a job in this field that pays enough to pay the bills. I only design aside from my actual job and in my free time. It's not how I make a living. I am sorry, that I cannot be of more help. I hope you'll find the information you are looking for.
Warm regards,
Hanna
Can you say what mohair you held with the PLÖTULOPI please
I used Filcolana Tilia, but you can use any silk mohair that you like. I hope this helps!
Does the sandnes line yarn grow alot after washing?
Thank you so much, Tahani! I really apprecite it! ❤️For me crochet is much harder than knitting. I always fail to count in crochet. 🤣
Do you have to block sweaters each time you wash them?
If you refer to blocking as in pinning your knits to a mat, then the answer is definitely no. Actually you don't need to do this for most knits on the first wash either. At the end of episode 8 I talk in length about my advice for blocking. If you want to know more about how I block my knits and also about common misconceptions when it comes to blocking, then please check it out. ❤️
Thank you! 😂
You are very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Holst supersoft actual has more yardage than stated because that spinning oil must account for some of that weight. The question is how much?🙈
My guess would be that the spinning oil was included in the calculation beforehand and that the stated yardage is correct. But of course I don't know for sure. 🤷♀️
It might be helpful if you actually mention what is your size ie height and bust as that helps other knitters gauge the yarn to their body size for value
I hope the textured wall is not the "popcorn" type that may contain asbestos - plz be careful.
Don't worry, it's only woodchip wallpaper. It's not my favorite but very common in rental appartments here in Germany.
