Learn how to use displacement maps in today's episode and help this rad granny out by adding the Phlearn logo to her hat!
You will need two elements for this technique:
-Logo or some sort of design
-Image to place the design on
To start, transform your logo onto the image. You can hold Cntl/Cmd + T, right click, and select Warp to really hone in on the correct angles and perspective. Next, go to Channels and find the one that has the most contrast (this is often the blue). Then, right click on that channel. Select New under the Document Menu. Title it appropriately and hit OK. Now, go to File - Save As, and save it as a PSD. This document is now your displacement map.
Back to the original image we go! Select RGB in the Channels tab so that all of them are selected. Now, go back to the layer tab. While on your logo layer, go to Filter - Distort - Displace. Set the horizontal and vertical scale to 10. It will ask you to load your displacement map, which is the other document that we just saved out. It will automatically start to integrate the texture into the logo!
Amazing quick tip: If you press the logo above the layers next to the word "Lock," anything you do will ONLY affect the pixels on that layer. You can think of it as a mask for your logo! This is called Locking the Transparency.
Feel free to play around! Try filling the logo with a color and then experimenting with blend modes. In this case, we chose to use Overlay.

Thanks to Phlearn I'm finally starting to feel like Photoshop isn't so clumsy... or more correctly, that I'm not so clumsy with Photoshop. I've seen a lot of good teachers with a ton of good information, but no one compares to Mr. Nace when it comes to instruction.

***** Hey Aaron, do you know why Ps CC no longer has the Oil Painting Filter? What did they do with it? CS6 had it but it seems as though they've taken it away and replaced it with the Camera RAW filter... Thanks... How about a tutorial on making an image look like an oil painting?

Perfect timing! I couldn't believe my dumb luck that you posted this. I have a client that wants her logo put on one of those black foam microphone covers. I used warp to make the letters wrap around, but the texture was off. This is what I needed, and didn't even know what this video was going to be about! Perfect! Thanks a lot.

I had learned about displacement maps many years ago, but it completely went out of my mind. Thank you Aaron.
I can think of many ways to use this one. I do not know how it will work on composites but its definitely given me some ideas to blend shapes to textures. I am going to have fun. Thanks again. :)

Sometimes when the individual channels are not satisfying enough, I will use a channel mixer adjustment layer with output set to grayscale, inverting channels as needed. Sometimes I'll even stamp down the layers or else put them in a layer group, then apply a curves adjustment layer. This way, i get a very accurate representation of the contrast on the base layer. This is also great for masking, when isolating selections from background, especially in older versions of Photoshop which lack content-aware fill...

    Hi, thanks for the tutorial.
I have a question: I'm a little bit familiar with 3D modeling softwares, predominantly Blender. Usually when preparing a Bump/Displacement map for my textures I simply take the image, desaturate it and adjust contrast if I need to and that's it.
What is the advantage of using the RGB channels? Will the above solution work just as well? What if we have an image where neither of the channels has sufficient detail (contrast)?
    Thanks

Now that you can get a depth map from any image in photoshop, thanks to the neural filter depth blur. it is perhaps a good time to revisit displacement maps?
In particular, I wonder if you could cover how to create a 3D version of any 2D by first creating a depth map with the neural filer, and then a left and right eye view using the displacement map? And perhaps finish off by turning the two views into an anaglyph, using the channel mixer, or layer styles..
While the depth maps that PS can now make give good left and right eye views and anaglyphs, if I make the latter in StereoPhoto Maker, I have not been able to get good results with the displacement filter in PS..

Hi Aaron, can you make an episode to show us how to combine a photo of a luxury house and a photo of maple trees and make it looks realistic?
When I tried to do this, I found few challenges.
    1) matching the colour and tones of different photos
    2) matching the perspectives of two different photos
    3) the beautiful yellow and red maple leafs doesn't match the green colour of the plants in the luxury house picture

Aaron, When you are aligning your text (or whatever object you need to center) to the canvas you don't need to create another layer of fill. Just stay on your that text/object layer and Select All. The alignment panel will light up for you to choose how you want to align your object.

Hi Aaron. Thanks a lot for all tutorials. They've totally changed the way I do things. Quick Q. I've read that displacement maps work better if you give them a touch of Gaussian blur before you save them. Is this true?

    • @Mark-James-Thomas
      @Mark-James-Thomas 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, you need to get rid of any pixelation or texture, you need it to be smooth, so gaussian blur slightly.

What are the point of the vertical and horizontal scale values? I remember a tutorial from (a long time ago) that implied it was like a mathematical grid, and the values pointed in the direction of your subject. 10,10 would be pointing to the top right, -10,10 would be too left, -10,-10 would be bottom left and 10, -10 bottom right.
You would push the value to make the displacement turn more.
BUT, I never got it to work. Anyone know?
