thats one thing i admire about trunks. he holds the wisdom of gohan, the heart of goku, the temperance of his father, and even abit of cunning of piccolo. he just managed to use all those ingredients to just basically tell the androids "the bs is over, you won't be forgiven"
what makes future trunks so awesome is that in a non battle situation hes as caring as goku but in battle he shows no mercy to his enemies like vegeta.
This is why Future Trunks is my favorite he may of not had the most epic fights but he gets the job done in and out. He doesn't sit there and toy around with his enemies all day.
trunks fights scenes are usually pretty short, and i love it that way because he doesnt stupidly allow his enemies to power up and start destroying shit, he simply gets it done

Why would Trunks torture those androids, if he knows that this might backfire?

I agree, but he also knew that they had incredibly powerful bombs installed in their chests, so it makes sense to make them feel helpless for long enough to realize that they're going to die, but not long enough for them to get that whole 'If I have to die, you're coming with me' vibe. Even Trunks couldn't survive the bombs they had, since everyone including Cell was convinced that #16's bomb could've destroyed Cell in his perfect form.

While some will say its a matter of opinion, if you know what DBZ is, and how it was not a well constructed series, the idea that Akira just never thought of buu before introducing trunks makes the most sense.
