I love that the sax player doesn't try to play every note ever. He just sticks to the groove and stays gritty and soulful.

Great seeing Elkie rocking again, hot as ever before. Haven't seen much of her since the days of her band Vinegar Joe, which also consisted Robert Palmer who pursued a successful solo carreer afterwards.

This was my introduction to an earlier version of the song that wound up being left off of the SHOT OF LOVE album released after the smoke had cleared from Dylan's Slow Train Coming & Saved tent revival Christian Gospel tours. I caught the show at SF's Warfield Theater in November of 1980, having just gotten to the Bay Area a few months earlier. I had a sense that I'd be seeing Dylan with one of the hottest live bands he'd ever played with and his unprecedented choice to have Gospel Chorus singing call and response: th-cam.com/video/X1k0tYy6p-I/w-d-xo.html
A couple years later when I got the SHOT OF LOVE album, no "Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar" was on it. A couple years later than that was when CD's reached me and when I finally got a CD player and started working low-paying jobs so slowly began converting my LP library to CD's, I found the CD version of this record included "Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar."

My world of Berkeley engagement with social issues and activism, now and in hindsight seems to have been decades ahead of the New World Order. Lawrence Summers and other leaders of the Neo-Liberal E-CON Revolution that Was Not Televised may have known what was coming. Not even the clearest thinkers in those heady days of resistance to Reagan-Bush's MORNING IN AMERICA persuaded me that they had any clue of what was coming, besides more of the same imperial games. Yet, the dystopian shades of that vision that Dylan was impressionisticly trying to pull together and shape into a song, was that human trafficking he perceived in all the Free Trade Agreements superseding national sovereignty as Claudette runs the Whore House in Buenos Aires? I later learned what the Neo-Liberal E-CONomic doctrines and dogmas meant. What the human costs of that economic philosophy would look (and feel) like. That ascendant GREED IS GOOD media meme of the Chicago Boys and their own Rabbi or Misleader Milton Friedman had sold to Wall Street, our nation's true leadership and that even Neo-Conservatives were embracing. That whole late 1970's face-off between the Paleo-Cons of Richard Nixon and his naive coterie of Cold War opportunists and ideologues from Pat Buchanan to Jeannie Kirkpatrick to William Safire and Southern Campaign strategist Kevin Phillips and the Neo-Cons who embraced the FREE (even if not rankly unfair) Trade with power shifting from sovereign governments to ISDS corporate arbitration panels started to make sense and come into focus.
      radioopensource.org/welcome-neoliberal-world/#
Artist but no activist and successful too young (kinda like Neo-Liberal E-CON New Global Order Godfather Larry Summers) to have ever needed to learn what a "Working Class Hero" as John Lennon limned it actually meant, Dylan was intuiting in his own open and receptive ways the Old Testes dark night of the soul encounter of Jacob wrestling the Angel all night until dawn when that Messenger\Angel of God gave limping and hip injured Jacob the mytho-poetic name of Israel (tribal Hebe for Serves God).
Dylan's verses in this world-out-of-balance blues shouldn't be able to share a stage with the Christian messianic devotional gospels he wrote and together with those fiery and passionate musicians of their own faiths gave such powerfully compelling expression to on the same tour. Yet, listen to how the verses evolve before they eventually appear on record, first as b-side to an anodyne single from that least of all anodyne Dylan albums SHOT OF LOVE. Then as it takes its place on the new format of CD and enters the Dylan canon. The only artist I've ever heard even try and wrestle this song in any form to the rock solid ground from the world's disturbed and destabilized ether is Elkie Brooks and the remnant of her Brit band Vinegar Joe (after Robert Palmer left her previous band for a solo career in soul
&b): Now here it is on U. of Tube thanks to her and band performing it on some TV show that surely never aired in U.S. that I know of. Even Dylan scholars try to avoid or evade this part of Dylan's canon. Kinda like my fellow Hebes never allowing Megillath Yehudith\Book of Judith into the canon.
Wish there'd be more info on this clip of a TV show that aired Elkie Brooks and Vinegar Joe's remnants and reconstituted band's take. Here's the lyrics from the recorded track and not from the above-linked Warfield Theater Show, San Francisco November 13, 1980. That show and others in the week-long engagement were walked out on by more than half the audience as I recall. I was sitting in first row of the balcony having arrived in Berkeley to resume my undergrad studies only months before after living down the street from Dylan's pre-Christian performance period. His recording studios were in a rundown and abandoned looking building on the Santa Monica-Venice line along a not yet gentrified So Cal coast and aptly named Rundown Studios once STREET LEGAL and other recordings and rehearsals for the Budokan and Pacific NW tour were happening with band-members drawn from Dylan's bible classes in the Valley.
The audience walk-outs at The Warfield escalated as the passionate evening's preaching progressed. The disgust around me with what legendary wheeler dealer promoter Bill Graham had advertised not as a Tent Revival Born Again Christian evangelical concert but as a Dylan Retrospective for the rest of the week-long run as Dylan inserted a few early touchstones that worked well with his 2 organs on stage, Like A Rolling Stone etc. Where was Al "Kapusta" Kooper when Dylan needed some whacko humor to leaven those with his yootful verses ringing in their heads like these from "My Back Pages":
"A self-ordained professor's tongue too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty is just equality in school
"Equality, " I spoke the word as if a wedding vow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now
"In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand at the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I'd become my enemy in the instant that I preach
My existence led by confusion boats, mutiny from stern to bow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now
"Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms quite clear, no doubt, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now"
Bless Elkie and her A&R backers and her band for having the guts, grit and ragged grace to wrestle with these implacable words that seem even more relevant to our Covid 19 Pandemic Age of Trump-Barr Syndrome & Microbial 'Globe Humbling' (borrowed that phrase from novelist Zadie Smith's new book of essays) Plague.
Listening to Dylan rehearse his STREET LEGAL band of fellow Born Again revival bible students in the years before I moved up to Berkeley by simply hanging out down on the street below Rundown Studios' unmarked 2-floor building (including his soon-to-be wife and mother of his second family) I always wanted to interject as I have when deep in dialogue with those of other religious traditions whose own wrestling matches with angels and guides I'd come to respect and wanted to learn more about, that in the Hebrew tradition I'd been raised within the books of the prophets reflect a tradition where scriptural prophecy is not PREDICTIVE it is meant to be CAUTIONARY. From Isiaiah (Yeshayahu), Yermeyahu (Jeremiah and from which the English term "Jeremiad" is derived, think about its vernacular usage in our language), Ezeqiel or Yehezqel these major prophets and surely the minor, if no less sacred prophets are not meant to be studied and discussed as one discusses an oracle or someone who can see a destined future. Repentance only has meaning in a world where human choice is possible.
These angry and in your face Old Testes truth-tellers and disturbers of the established iffy status quo that flows from the corruptions of humanity are bringing the message like in many gospel songs to Change Our Ways, Or Else... destruction will come. There is no date set in the Hebrew scriptures for anything in prophecy cuz God Willing we'll change our ways to repent and get back to acting with appropriate human humility and more righteously, by prioritizing our concern for the least among us. Although the Hebrew leaves much room for questioning what righteous is when Creation is clearly that of a Food Chain and much in the Old Testes about our Patriarchs and Matriarchs reflect dysfunction of families rather than any Disney form of suburban innocence and wholesomeness. As Tom Waits would record a decade later in "God's Away On Business" for a benefit concert meant to aid healing between Tibet and overlords of a newly emboldened China (see on U. of Tube the video directed by Dylan's eldest son Jesse of that Waits studio recording) where the Dalai Lama delivered the Lincoln Center evening's welcoming introductory remarks before Waits closed the show with a decidedly affectionate, if purposefully irreverent nod to the exiled HHDL (His Holiness the Dalai Lama). In our own Abrahamic scriptures God is cast as an absentee, if omniscient father. Their feminine matriarchal side only puts in cloudy Shechina appearances when the wayward wondering refugees wander the wilderness trying to fill their Infinite and Unified Creator's form...

Dylan's is by far the best--hands down--this person sings it like it is some kind of torch song.
