    I have this 45 and actually prefer this mix over the one on the album. It has more of a "gritty" sound perfect for Steppenwolf. Love the needle drop at the start.

    This is the original single mono mix of "Born To Be Wild" by Steppenwolf featuring vocals by John Kay. Released on the ABC Dunhill label back in the summer of 1968. It peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Chart for three weeks.

    Old Orchard Beach, Maine, summer of 68, this masterpiece could be heard coming from the cars making the rounds through the thoroughfare while incense filled my nostrils in the head shops that attracted my attention....cool kids lined the boardwalk and eyed one another, French girls who knew no English, American boys, 15 years old trying to be cool and hook up as the music took us all someplace we would never again be......we were really Born to Be Wild but someday we would grow old and remember!

    Yes! Every collector needs more than one turntable, and a specific stylus for playing certain records. A mono cartridge is built specifically with a mechanism to track a laterally cut groove. This is one reason your juke boxes sound so gutsy and musical. It is the mono cartridge, and tube circuitry. But as I have pointed out, the plus side has a minus side, where you may be straddling a fine line of damaging your records. Please see pinch effect as the vintage carts can not deal with it.

  • @TheFRiNgEguitars
    @TheFRiNgEguitars 12 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The monaural cartridge, unlike a stereo alignment at 45/45 degrees, its coils are aligned at 180 degrees which is exactly in line with a laterally cut monaural groove. So, more mechanical energy is efficiently converted into an electrical signal with less loss. The result is improved inner detail, higher dynamic range, more emotional sound. (than a stereo cart mixed to mono) These carts are lighter tracking than vintage mono carts, so wear isn't an issue, and compatible with any medium mass arm.

    I agree with your comment about using a different size tip, especially a .6 m,il conical on a highly modulated monaural 45 groove. They were mixed and cut to sound good on AM radio, and cheap record changers of the era which had stiff ceramic cartridges (Such as Astatic on RCA machines) But these cartridges were hungry for vinyl, and really ate them up. So, a realistic alternative would be a .6 mil tip for a high compliance magnetic cartridge, which tends to track unworn parts of the groove.

    Pinch effect is least understood of all mis-tracking problems. This can be found online, and a site with diagrams showing the geometry of how this happens. Pinch effect distortion occurs when the contact points shift rotationally AROUND the tip as it tracks the wiggles of the groove. As the stylus swings across, it "sees" the groove as narrower and is physically forced upward, as the original cutting stylus was not. This upward movement is not part of the signal, so the cause of the distortion

  • @TheFRiNgEguitars
    @TheFRiNgEguitars 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yes, the tip pressure is what it's all about. You need sufficient pressure (via tip size and tracking force) to keep the stylus in contact with the groove walls, track the hills & dales without losing contact. Conversely, too much force at the tip WILL score the groove wall, in worst case hack off parts of it. (then grinding in the debris upon the next play) There is also the abrasion of any dirt in there, dulling the groove, hence the gray appearance of a worn groove. Always a plus & a minus.

    The tech posts I have contributed are for education, and are according to my opinion (and experience) :) Other opinions may differ, and perfectly valid in someone else's experience. In the world of analog audio, the rules can be bent a lot, so, sometimes there is no right or wrong, only what is best for a particular system and listener. In regard to mono 45's, the system they are played on DOES make a difference. Most of all, a mono cartridge tracking a bit heavier than stereo is reasonable.

    Pinch effect is a fact of life with records. The line contact tip closely resembles the cutting tip, so pinch effect is almost nonexistent. On the other hand, a conical tip gets squeezed at the inner groove area, an elliptical tip less squeeze. This is why it's bad to play a record on an old mono ceramic cartridge. The mechanical mechanism can not move up and down. The stylus digs in against the mass (inertia) of the arm which can not move fast enough. This is why the inner groove wears first.

    I intend to purchase a mono cartridge soon. I have read the reviews. Plus I have three vintage mono hi fi sets, two of which have vintage ceramic cartridges (I would not play my best records on) So, I have experienced the fullness, and dynamics of the mono 45's played on a vintage record player with an original mono cartridge. My RCA orthos, restored and recapped, sound amazing, even the table top models with a few watts fill the room with sound.

  • @TheFRiNgEguitars

    I like most your observation about cartridges with stiffer mechanical assemblies, and heavier tracking, also adding mass to the headshell. This applies only to heavily modulated 45's, and not good at all for LP's. As I responded, groove wear becomes the consequence, even when using a 1 mil tip. The larger groove width at the top of the groove will certainly accommodate a 1 mil tip, as it will ride higher in the groove, and track well up to about 12 Khz. more...

    There is another version of Born To Be Wild out there! There is a version with a different and LONGER COLD FADE ending . I looked on TH-cam and elsewhere and it isn't available on the web. It is supposedly available on "Vintage Music Vol. # 9 & 10". I guess Steve Hoffman found a surviving master tape and was able to include it with the Vintage Music series issued in the late 1980's. If anyone has the longer version, put it out on TH-cam.
    Probably one of the worst business decisions ever made in the history of the entertainment industry was when the suits at ABC/Dunhill had the original studio master tapes tossed into the garbage to save money on storage costs in the early 70's. That means Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night, The Grassroots, Mamas and the Papas original masters are gone for good. Unless of course someone had the foresight to save something from the landfill.
    Of course the worst decision of all time in the history of the entertainment industry was when Decca Records didn't sign up the Beatles when they had a chance to. But that is another story....

    • @pm41224
      @pm41224 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      EMI does keep their master tapes preserved, although they threw away the tapes for two Beatles singles: Love Me Do / P.S. I Love You (the single version of "Love Me Do" had its master tapes discarded and the Andy White version never received a stereo mix) and She Loves You / I'll Get You.

    Make that please, a magnetic monaural cartridge which is made for playing mono, but has up and down compliance to minimize wear caused by pinch effect in the groove. Current mono magnetic (and moving coil) carts on the market are safe for stereo records, as they will track them without damaging them, but the output will be in mono.

    Good suggestion for a conical stylus, and some .3 x.7 ellipticals. ABC's cartridge has a "stereohedron" type, or "line contact" which contacts more of the groove wall. The VTA should not be changed, as this will throw the stylus contact pattern out of line with the record groove.

    I love your channel, you have the real versions, that's how those songs are supposed to sound, too bad most people don't have the records or don't even know the classics are not supposed to sound like they do on digital remasters and stereo mixes or whatever.
    why can't record companies "just copy the record" as it is to cd or streams or whatever?, why do they use wimpy thin sounding mixes that don't represent the original records?.

    • @JohnnyFriendly
      @JohnnyFriendly 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To be fair, they often do. There are many, many examples where the correct mono mixes of '60s singles have made it to CD

  • @TheFRiNgEguitars
    @TheFRiNgEguitars 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    But I think the advice given to you back in '84 was ill-advised. The more aggressive cuts are designed to track the groove as it was cut by the cutting head. They are shaped more like the cutting head. This greatly lowers distortion, (reduces "sibilant distortion, an "s" sounding like an "sh") and almost completely eliminates "pinch effect distortion" at the inner groove area near the label. ABC's Stanton tracks the inner groove with no increased distortion, something a conical tip can't do.

  • @TheFRiNgEguitars
    @TheFRiNgEguitars 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Good comments bopper, however, the higher mass arm and headshell, with heavier tracing forces of 11 grams will take its toll on the record groove. Especially NM and mint condition records are becoming more scarce, so there may be a better choice to get better sound, and preserve their condition, even with perhaps 100 or more plays. The major manufacturers offer high compliance monaural cartridges that track at about 2.5 grams. The coils are aligned 180 degrees, same as a laterally cut groove.

    The elliptical stylus does require careful setup. A fine Line tip requires perfect azimuth (+/- a degree) I agree the alignment should favor the more difficult to track inner groove area. What's nice about a conical stylus is that it's not fussy. It will perform satisfactorily well even when misaligned. But again, a properly set up elliptical will outperform most conical tips. I happen to like a .6 mil conical for 45's since it tracks lower in the undamaged part of the groove.

    바람과 함께 달리고
    And the feelin' that I'm under
    그리고 내가 그밑에 있다고 느껴
    Yeah God I gonna make it happen
    오 하나님 되게 만들거에요
    Take the world in a love embrace
    사랑의 포옹으로 세상을 가지고
    Fire all of your guns at once
    네가 가진총을 한번에 발사해서
    And explode into space
    우주로 폭발할거에요
    Like a true nature's child
    참된 자연의 아이처럼
    We were born, born to be wild
    우리는 거칠게 태어났지
    We can climb so high
    우리는 아주 높이 기어올라갈수있어
    I never wanna die
    절대로 죽고싶지 않아
    Born to be wild
    거칠게 태어났지
    Born to be wild
    거칠게 태어났지
    Get your motor runnin'
    오토바이에 시동을 걸어
    Head out on the highway
    고속도로로 나가
    Lookin' for adventure
    모험을 찾아서
    And whatever comes our way
    무엇이든 우리에게 온다면.
    Yeah Good I gonna make it happen
    그래 좋아 되게 만들거야
    Take the world in a love embrace
    사랑의 포옹으로 세상을 가져봐
    Fire all of your guns at once
    니가 가진총을 한번에 발사해봐

    우리는 거칠게 태어났네
    We can climb so high
    아주 높이 기어올라갈수 있어
    I never wanna die
    절대로 지고싶지 않아
    Born to be wild
    Born to be wild

    This single version is a completely different recording from the LP version, typical of many Steppenwolf singles. Same with Three Dog Night, also a Dunhill Records artist.
    They were NOT album versions edited and mixed for 45s.
    You can only get this great mono single version on this original black label Dunhill 45. ABC/MCA oldies 45s made in the late 1970s-1980s feature the LP version. Avoid these!

      DGolus I'll bet that the song also was recorded at the length that it is and not edited from the different take, either (same with Magic Carpet Ride).

      DGolus And it doesn't end with Dunhill.
      Columbia,Motown (concidentally now sharing ownership with Dunhill and many others at Universal) and Elektra (then an independent, of course, before the 1970s Warner buyout with Atlantic) also had drastically different single versions,too...
      Just taking 1968, and going thru early 70 with just those three:
      Columbia:
      "The Time Has Come Today" by the Chambers Brothers was, of course, one of the oddests ducks ever, being first a 1966 recording then in 1967-68 redone on the album "Time Has Come" as an 11 minute long song then trimmed for two different lengths on single and released in the summer of 1968, a month after Dunhill released that fabulous Steppenwolf song "Born to be Wild."
      Blood Sweat Tears's singles all seem to have odd single versions...of the big three of 1969 that radio still plays, "Spinning Wheel" (May) has a replaced instrumental break, which has been said to be replaced for the album, meaning that the very brief part (near the final verse/chorus) of "Spinning Wheel"'s an original, as on 45, and that (a la Tommy James/Shondells's Roulette release* from 1968-69, :"Crimson and Clover") the longer part on the LP's actually a SPLICE in, then on "Spinning Wheel" the closing sample of "Did you ever see a Lassie" is heard on the last few seconds unlike the full ending 4 minute long ending. (Other Blood, Sweat and Tears" 1969 hits, "You've Made Me So Very Happy" and the capper, "And When I Die" have more conventional editing.)
      Motown:
      1970's Rare Earth single "I'm Losing You (I Know)" on the 11:00 minute album version, seem to be a different recording entirely than the mono single. This was, of course, following the "song proper" excerpt of their 22 minute long "Get Ready" which was just an immense edit and the same recording but mono.
      Elektra:
      What can I say? Judy Collins's "Both Sides Now" and The Doors's single "Touch Me" (1968/1969) have much, er, touching up: Collins's (November 1968) single being rerecorded for the 1972 "Colors of" compilation so as to change at least a lyric in the final (3rd) chorus: "From give and take" instead of the original "From win and Lose". "Both Sides Now" had first original on a 1967 album "Wildflowers" and the versions' the same as the single there. The Doors's
      Touch Me" (December 1968) also had a later album version which, I understand, was the same take but heavily overdubbed. Both, btw had a notable xylophone and harpsichord, in "Touch Me's" case especially on the romantically smooth done final chorus vocal on the 1969 album "Soft Parade" . But no album version of "Touch Me" existed before the single.
      But anyhow, in short, more and more companies were doing often different recordings of songs.
      *Coincidentally, if not ironically, BOTH Dunhill AND Roulette very shortly thereafter in the early 70s shared the ABC/Dunhill Goldies 45 orphanage, later fostered by Universal when MCA took over the library.

      True, Magic Carpet Ride had its own 45 mix, as did Joy To The World by Three Dog Night (Old Fashioned Love Song too I believe).

    You should be the next Dr. Ebbetts who is the best Go to Guy of The Beatles Bootleggers out there who's pro sounding Needle Drop CD Recordings of the entire Beatles Catalog of Albums from around the world sound even better than the official releases. He and his team of audio engineers have cleaned up the audio tracks all the way and the vinyl sound coming through in digital format sounds richer and warmer. You should do the same and get your 45 singles digitally cleaned up all the way and really bring out the Monophonic Punch in the singles.

      I've actually given that idea some serious thought! But I have no desire to fight lawyers over copywrite infringement, so it would have to be done legally - and that is the problem. While many copywrite owners may be ok with the idea, others may not. I just had Simon & Garfunkel take down my "Sounds of Silence" 45 RPM mono posting, as they only like the stereo versions. The mono mix of that tune is just awesome, and now it's gone... So stay tuned!

      True , they hv done great things but....the Nature of the beast still has to be dealt with which is in the digital transforms and then back to analog, to be able to hear your work.Music was forever changed in 1983. Up to that year we had lived in a digital-audio-free world, where musicians and the music industry flourished in a state of pure analog bliss. Vast numbers of people actually listened to music--without doing anything else--on a regular basis.
      An analog recording corresponds the variations in air pressure of the original sound. A digital recording is a series of numbers that correspond to the sound's continuous variations, but the numbers have to be reconverted to analog signals before they can be listened to. No wonder analog and digital sound so different from each other.

    Record is way off-centered. Like a swirling motion. Not good, I guess Dunhill's pressing machines need to be re-calibrated!
