HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MR. YANOVSKY. YOU'RE ONE OF THE GREATEST GENTLEMEN, GUITARISTS, HUMAN BEINGS, ROCK PERSONALITIES, STAGE ARTISTS AND VOCALISTS EVER. MANY THANKS AND MUCH LOVE TO YOU AND MESSERS. BOONE, BUTLER, SEBASTIAN AND YESTER.
On this day in 1966 {August 15th} the Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer in the City" reached #1 {for 2 weeks} on the Canadian RPM Singles chart... And two days earlier on August 13th it also reached #1 {for 3 weeks} on the Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart... It reached #8 on the United Kingdom's Singles chart... Was written by Mark Sebastian, the brother of group member John Sebastian... Sadly, lead guitarist 'Zal' Yanovsky passed away on December 13th, 2002 at the young age of 57... R.I.P. Mr. Yanovsky
9 yrs old hangin' around the Tilt a Whirl. 2 Shure VocalMaster's strapped to the frame blasting this song over and over. It's hot but the sun is going down...
The hot summer of 1966 made people feel cranky and unhappy especially walking around New York City to and from work headed to the nearest subway to head home
This brings back memories for me, vacationing in Munising, Mi in the upper peninsula.... hmm would have been summer of 1966. Nights I would sit out at the campground at Petes Lake with my 6 transistor radio listening to CKLW Windsor or one of the Chicago powerhouse stations play the hits like some of the new Motown records. Great times... thanks for the memories!
I've got this 45 as well as "Do You Belive In Magic",both of which are perfect examples of hot mixing. They are without a doubt two of the most powerful ones I've got.
I didn't grow up in the 60's but I grew up listening to 45s and vinyl. We have this 45 and I always loved this mix of the song, I have the mono LP mix on Hums Of The Lovin' Spoonful and this 45 mix beats it with it's clarity and power. Thanks for uploading these 45s, it is fun to discover songs I am unfamiliar with and I'm glad the songs I love can be heard as they were originally intended right on the internet.
M1Garandstudios Appreciate your comment! Yes, it is the mono mix found on the 45 that AM Top 40 radio stations played and for those who grew up during this time, this is the definitive hit version!
WOW! I also bought this one when it hit #1 51.5 years ago! I'm old! The stereo version never thrilled me. Their producer never quite did a decent stereo mix on any of their tracks. Thanks for preserving this one in glorious mono!
"Summer In The City" by The Lovin' Spoonful hit the #1 spot on The Billboard charts for three weeks. This is the original mono mix like it was heard on AM radio stations. Released on Kama Sutra Records in 1966.
Yes! This is the version I'm used to. I made a cd for myself of their 45's and it smokes any store bought cd by a long shot. Mono is the way these were meant to be heard
Love, love, love the song and the wonderful summer is finally here! It is in the 90's here in Toronto, Canada on the very first day of summer!! I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!! xoxoxox
I love the clarity of these 45s! Before finding your site, I never realized how much different the mono mixes are. Also, it never occurred to me how the producers were aware of the frequency limitations of AM broadcasting, and thus how their mixes were purposely focused on the mid/bass tones with a boost needed where the treble was concerned. It leads to a well rounded mono sound on a Hi-Fi system.
Correct. Plus record producers and engineers put primary emphasis on these mono mixes for how they would sound over a car's AM radio, which is where most teens would first hear a new song. Producers wanted their records to "pack a punch". Before the early 1970s, FM was mostly a wasteland of nothingness. AM - all in mono - was where all the great legendary Top 40 radio stations were. And they sounded just fine!)
I enjoy your Posts; I did subscribe ; I used to be a Professional DJ decades ago and have 1650 45s ; from 1966 to 1973 all except 6 in Mint Condition in Original Sleeves ; about 10 years ago ; I put the A & B sides on 49 Computer MP3 disks ; so have 3300 Tunes..I lso have a playlist with Record company info; of course showing the A & B sides..Love to hear from you and see about your collection; I went to my first Record show a few years ago on LI NY and found about 30 or 40 45s to add to collection
SUMMER IN THE CITY / Cm Hot town, summer in the city - Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty Been down, isn't it a pity - Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city All around, people looking half dead walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head But at night it's a different world - Go out and find a girl Come-on come-on and dance all night - Despite the heat it'll be alright And babe, don't you know it's a pity - That the days can't be like the nights In the summer, in the city - In the summer, in the city Cool town, evening in the city - Dressing so fine and looking so pretty Cool cat, looking for a kitty - Gonna look in every corner of the city Till I'm wheezing like a bus stop - Running up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop But at night it's a different world - Go out and find a girl Hot town, summer in the city - Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty Been down, isn't it a pity - Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city All around, people looking half dead - Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head But at night it's a different world - Go out and find a girl
Hallo WABCRADIO77 hast sehr viele gesammelte Singles . Great .Ich hatte auch einiege RARiäten . Habe sie meinen besten Freund geschenkt...... ( ER IST TOT ........)
Summer in the City of Lancaster, PA in 2014 is NOT the way summer should be! Temperatures are WAY below where they should be in the daytime! We're getting daytime highs that should actually be nighttime lows! At least we have the Lovin' Spoonful hit to remind us how summer should be.
With summer fast approaching, Memorial Day Weekend kicking off the season, we have a celebration from 50 summers ago that still reverbs discreetly, especially with the traffic and jackhammer sound effects in the middle of the recording.
The summer of New York City coming home from work heading to the nearest subway you're home ready to jump in the shower and before you know it you're out

The hot summer of 1966 made people feel cranky and unhappy especially walking around New York City to and from work headed to the nearest subway to head home
This record is extremely loud and distorted but at the same time it brings a nice nostalgic feeling to me.

The summer of '66 to me was just another ordinary summer vacation from school. I was between third and fourth grade back then.
Great memories
What a great summer it was. Freedom, not like now, we thought things were getting better. Yes, mono 45's nothing better.

Sounds INCREDIBLE!!!
John Sebastian
As much as I always loved "Do you believe in magic?" I think this was their best song ever.
WOW! I also bought this one when it hit #1 51.5 years ago! I'm old! The stereo version never thrilled me. Their producer never quite did a decent stereo mix on any of their tracks. Thanks for preserving this one in glorious mono!

Their only chart topper. It peaked at #1 for 3 weeks the week ending August 13, 1966.
Verano en la ciudad..me gusta..
I listen to this song on my brothers craig 8 track stereo tape player he had in his 1965 Impala SS when I was 13 or 14 years old. I loved this song.

@@danielgolus4600 My understanding it was in the late 60's when underground rock stations came about.
I also became a Green Acres fan that year as well.
I just got my second copy of this 45. Good video.

Thank you for showing the debut dates. It helps me remember where and what I was doing during that time.
I've got both stereo and mono versions on a promo CD single for one of the Die Hard movies. The difference is startling.
SUMMER IN THE CITY / Cm
Hot town, summer in the city - Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity - Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people looking half dead walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head
But at night it's a different world - Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night - Despite the heat it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity - That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city - In the summer, in the city
Cool town, evening in the city - Dressing so fine and looking so pretty
Cool cat, looking for a kitty - Gonna look in every corner of the city
Till I'm wheezing like a bus stop - Running up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop
But at night it's a different world - Go out and find a girl
Hot town, summer in the city - Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity - Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people looking half dead - Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head
But at night it's a different world - Go out and find a girl
Although we never got the 45 we got this song on an Oldies compilation album in late 1968:-)
C minor. Three flats. My favourite key. Loved this song since I was little tiny. Thank you.

That very song got me expelled from high school for blowing up the PA system.
In the song they're complaining about it being to hot.Well I'll except that over the cold winter time.

marie Hiam And now Summer in Lancaster, PA in 2015 is the same way it was last year! Where's the real hot weather we should be having?
With summer fast approaching, Memorial Day Weekend kicking off the season, we have a celebration from 50 summers ago that still reverbs discreetly, especially with the traffic and jackhammer sound effects in the middle of the recording.
Are you enjoying Lancaster PA today?
It's August 1st and the dog days of summer is upon us
Imagine the summer of 1966 again instead of the summer of this century
John Sebastian went solo in the seventies with the television sitcom Welcome Back Kotter
