    Re your loose bulkheads, this Pearson was one of the early production boats built with internal liners and bulkhead slots. At the time this was a great saver of time and money. Which meant these boats could be available to the ordinary sailors!
    It was never built or expected to last 50 years! ( as you found out when you discovered the , eh, loose keel!)
    So please have a little respect for the $5.00/ hr fiberglass workers that built these boats to a tight budget! I know I was one of them! (Different factory).
    Love this crazy project!
    Cheers Warren

    hey boat builder here, if you want to cut down on the smell DO NOT use the PVC white sanitation hose, use Trident Sani hose #101 or equivalent.. its much more expensive, but the PVC stuff permeates with in a year of use "starts to smell" and the other hose take much longer "6 - 10 years to smell". love your stuff and keep it comin.

    i'm sure I'm not the only one to mention this, but the head and galley are usually on opposite sides of the boat so that there is a physical separation between the intake of raw water and the outlet of sewage. Maybe something to consider when you're putting it all back together.

    We just bought a 35ft cruiser with overboard discharge toilet and raw water flush. The boat was mainly used in salt water and Like you said, the combination of human excrement and salt water is no joke. We tried to clean the toilet but the yellow scale line in the bowl was not very impressed when we tried to get rid of it and just stayed. So I decided to pump the bowl dry, wet toilet paper with pure vinegar and drape it over the yellow scale ring. Left it for a few hours, took out the paper and started scrubbing with a scotchbrite. It started to fade very little after a lot of elbow grease so I again put down wet vinager paper and let it sit for again a few hours. More scrubbing, more soaking, more scrubbing. And finally after a full day it gave way and we have a shiny toilet bowl again. Since we have the boat in sweet water I guess that was the last time we saw this yellow ring in the bowl and also are free of bad odor from now on. Keep it up. Great video with humor too. Can'not wait to see what you will design.

    I highly recommend the dometic ball valve style toilets, very simple setup with a foot pedal that lifts to add water and goes down to flush. Easy seal replacement, negligible water consumption and believe you could run a three way ball valve to select fresh water in port, salt water on long passages. My wife and I could go a week or more with a 35 gallon black water tank on our 46 Grand Banks. Really loving the refit videos!

    To use you fix a piece of cardboard or plywood in the plain of the bulkhead you want to add. Hold the stick against the cardboard placing the point of the stick at a point along the hull. Draw a line on the cardboard along the notched side of the stick. Repeat at the next point.
    I first heard of it from my brother who was a line foreman at a boat building company. He learned it from an old guy he worked with.
    In the last year or two several sites have popped up on the internet that explain it better than I. They also have pictures, which helps a lot.
    Looking forward to seeing your final design.

    If you are shifting to fresh water flush AND you recognise the plumbing issues with the sink - maybe combine both ideas. There are products on the market which is essentially a toilet with cistern flush and the top of the cistern is a sink that drains into the cistern to provide the toilet flush.

    D&K Really enjoying all the refit content. You are doing a great job explaining the reasoning and showing the issues you are trying to solve with the project. Sometimes it takes longer and even can cost more to do it yourself the right way, but you gain so much more experience and knowledge along the way, it has to be worth it. I can't wait to see what you guys come up with for the design. The elements in the existing design were great (Head, FIreplace Nook, Crazy Susan) so I imagine the next phase will be even more awsome.

    Heya Dan - pro plumber here. The best shower set up is just a shower head on a flexi hose slide mounted on a vertical rail. I've fitted and tried every other type. Beware of these posh selector type set ups. Most just hold stagnant water for months, then people spray it on themselves when they meddle with the settings.... Ugh. No. You must have access to any connections that might require service also, (if you do not wish to waste your time and painstaking work). Very best regards, and I have every confidence!!

  • @annahersey
    @annahersey ปีที่แล้ว

    it might be too late or not... but you can make it so you use the shower head in the sink also.... the sink would tuck up under where the shower head is and then when you need the sink you pull that out and then move the shower head lower... just an idea for you all... happy sailing/land living

  • @Betruetotgeyself
    @Betruetotgeyself ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The boat design was built structurally sound and designed by engineers. I would encourage Dan to learn more about why bulkheads are better loosely anchored rather than completely glued in. It’s the same reasons why houses aren’t built airtight. The same reasons why bridges and skyscrapers sway. If you glass in the bulkheads all around the sides of the haul and ceiling floor, you will create a brittle structure. It will break like a fault line in an earth quake.

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If that were true, then every boat would be built this way. But they're not. In fact every boat we've been able to dig into has much more structure than ours. And every bulkhead is fully glassed to the hull with Sikaflex attaching the deck. These production boats like ours were built to a deadline and budget and for people who don't actually sail very far. Just like your typical camper van is only meant for flat asphalt, and as soon as you take them down a bumpy gravel road, things start to fall apart.

    I absolutely love, love love that you two are tackling this! Some people think that Fred Sanford is dead, but he’s alive and well and living inside of me! I am the rescuer Of things that everyone else love to throw away! You to just do it, and I might need a fashion and myself. But like you, I am having the absolute time of my life at 63 years old.

      and the reason theres something in front of the stairs is because it prevents you from falling down the stairs and falling 10 feet all the way to the floor instead of falling 5 feet into a counter

    That hideaway lav is badass. 3-4" above the lav do a 3-4" recess stationary shelf. Install a 2 handle 6" high goose neck 4" spread faucet. When you use lav you just turn the goose neck out over basin. Run water lines high and tight below shelf. That hideaway basin was a work of art and awesome use of space!!! You can use shelf space on the side of faucet for toothbrush, soap ect. Maybe even have a flip down panel that covers faucet/shelf when not in use?
    I just think that hideaway basin really was a good creation, no need to reinvent just something to improve upon. To bad it wouldn't be feasible to Patten. I see a remodel your boat show coming with so many cruisers remodeling/improving their floating homes. Interesting yt series to come?

    The year pass would let you cruise the full Med for all the bonuses of all the possible port stops. Sounds like a great year in the making.

    Weirdly I'm actually quite excited about this whole thing. Seeing how you do things and learning from your skillsets will be massively helpful once I finally get my shit sorted and build out my own boat. xD Watching you sail gives me hope, but watching you build something cool gives me tools to actually make that a reality.

    Seeing you rip out all the wiring is enormously gratifying for me - I love 12v electrical and re-doing,neatening up, etc. is my jam. It also gives me The Fear, though, because I know how much money I would wind up spending on all of the correct gauge marine grade wiring, tooling for connectors I don't currently have and "need" because they're the right ones, etc. The last couple electrical projects on my vehicles have turned out to be absolutely WILDLY expensive. Good luck, lots of videos on the 12v system please! 😁

    You two are not a normal couple. A normal couple would have killed each other by now. This renovation is the craziest thing I've ever seen. Only a couple of geniuses could pull this off.

    Guys an incredible amount of respect for SaVing Uma... i love it, and I'm very excited to see how lovely little Uma is going to look after her 'botox'...you guys are a great team!
    That said, and even with all the 'design and build flaws' you highlighted rightfully so, consider this... Uma has taken you to some of the remotest places on earth... places that a thousand times fewer than 1% of the world population will get to see in their lifetime. Whilst I know that you made some amazing changes over the years, structurally she made it... :-)
    Now taking into account that you've stripped her basically 'bare-bones' and structurally reinforcing her and giving her a new life, she will be more than equipped for journeys beyond your sailing years...amazing!
    I am a huge fan of Mercedes-Benz Unimog Trucks (Google them), and especially the older SWB models. These vehicles just go where no other vehicle goes. In some way, I think, after all your mods to Uma she will be like a 'Unimog of the Seas'....#umamog ;-)
    Not to compare lovely Uma to a Truck, but you get my point...
    Well done, and your creativity, tenacity, and resilience amazes!

    When you talked about "the little car"
    - I thought, right the size for Italy and it's small streets
    - how would people in the south of US look at? dinghy to an F450?

    ...... When Kika heard the noise coming from the Locker I thought OMG something fell and may have broken............ I should have known better. That was good, really good.😁 When all this is done you will have an almost "New" Sail Boat.

    I always enjoy your videos and it remindes me of my many years working on boats. Back in the day your boat was built, that was not marine grade plywood. That was exteror grade plywood. Marine grade plywood was still much more espencive and a lot of manufactures subbed out for exterior grade for inside work. Very recently I even found a top name boat builder that used pressboard on cabnet doors veniered in a beautiful wood I only found out about this on a new boat when the door fell off in a rough sea and it pulled off it's screws .
