    The paper thin flexible panels and the photovalic fabrics will change the game.once they start being mass produced. The polymer and film based cells may be less efficient, but their light weight, flexibility and durability makes them easy to string together and sew into fabrics. Ones already developed produce 18x more power per kilogram than today's best silicon based cells. I envision Sails, Bimini's, Dodgers, Awnings, RV, and vehicle roofs, you name it, made from solar fabrics and films in the not so distant future.

    I really appreciate your problem solving attitude. From the start of your channel with your very limited financial means at the time, to your much greater spending power today. You seem to consistently find an approach that fits your requirements and means without overbuilding it, and able to accept the tradeoffs and limitations that come with it, and never skimp on putting the time and effort in. That has built you a boat (and a channel) that’s at any time the best it could have been. Very well done.

      @charlielloyd1080 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Flexible boats are strong boats. I hope Kika and Dan don't make UMA too rigid. A bit of flexible design allows the loading stresses to be transferred and shared. The brilliant work they did in step 114 bonding the deck to hull created a structural monocoque probably 'stronger' than the original design. My guess is that a few bonded ribs where the hull has deformed or bends too far would be perfect. I would rather sail a boat that bends under unexpected extreme loading than be in one that cracks and breaks apart.

    • @skohaya
      @skohaya ปีที่แล้ว

      @@charlielloyd1080 it's amazing that little boat has traveled so far. The structural issue of the mass and the lack of structural attachments that caused the boat to dimple on the sides, hopefully this can be replaced. After gutting a boat that much is there still value in Reglassing and reattaching of the boat has been molded to this flimsy life? For example is someone loses 100lbs, their body is forever damaged carrying all of that excess weight.. (skin stretched, joints ruined, fat cells large, stomach stretched). Can the boat be restored? 🥴

    Having the saw overload the inverter wouldn't be too surprising. Electric motors draws more power under load, and brushed motors are fairly "nasty" things as far as most inverters are concerned. I would more or less put it down to tool load rather than anything else. The thing might have gummed up a bit or have gotten misaligned during reassembly, or the wood getting cut were simply putting up a fight. (I would bet on the wood to be fair. Aged wood tends to be stronger than "fresh" store bought wood in my experience.)
    However, there is plenty of different types of inverters, some handle the spiky power draw nature of brushed motors better than others.
    A "quick fix" is an AC motor and have it spinning freely and act as a flywheel to help the inverter handle the power spikes. However, this is more common for 3 phase systems, but single phase AC motors also exist. Using an AC motor in this fashion is known in the industry as a synchronous capacitor and isn't too atypical for stabilizing electric grids. But in effect, it is just a free spinning AC motor, if something stalls out the grid the spinning mass of the motor will do its best to keep the grid going, reducing its inertia in the process. One can also do this to clean up the AC waveform of cheaper inverters, making them produce a somewhat cleaner sine wave.

    About your jigsaw problem with kicking the breaker in your inverter. Electric motors are inductive devices and brushed motors can make for a very "dirty load" because every time the contact is broken from a coil the voltage goes to infinity theoretically. This "noise" doesn't harm the power grid, but your inverter needs to protect itself and it will if it is smart enough. Your inverter it seems is smart enough. It could be a fast current trip or a fast voltage trip. The other possibility is that even though your saw shouldn't draw more power than your inverters rating, it does so at a bad "power factor" -which means that due to a mismatch in impedance, the power you draw is higher than the power you use. Your saw might have a capacitor in it to correct power factor (and suppress electrical noise), and that capacitor may have gone bad in it's old age.

    • @skyak4493
      @skyak4493 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it "fixed itself" it was likely the electrical noise from the brushes. You pulled the rotor, and maybe touched the contacts. The problem was burned away with use.

    It's very sad to see you tearing UMA apart, after all that beautiful work you have done, to make her look new! The problem with the inverter....my opinion is inverters and much like GFCI outlets and breakers. They will pick up stray current, going to ground and trip. You can use it on a regular outlets and have no problem. I have seen this problem before. I am a electrician and worked 45 years in the trade.I am not saying I know it all, but I a little! The big corporations make these expensive safety equipment and the electrical authority, inforces us to have to buy it. In the name of safety. I am not saying that we shouldn't be safe. But that's my opinion on it! Lloyd...from the east coast of Canada 🇨🇦
    Stay safe and enjoy your travels! Love your videos ❤

    I'm loving your work and completely empathise with having to stop, to fix the gear, to fix the boat! Can be very frustrating. Our boat was hauled out for 4 months and I never even got the initial job done 😆 You're both a wonderful inspiration.

    When faults fixes themselves you just know that the problem WILL happen again, just when you are in a position when the fault will be really bad or you cannot easily get the parts to fix it (or both).

    Okay solar origami V2.0 looks way better than the 1.0 prototype. However it is still unclear how it's any better than done regular flat panels that concertina. Sail Life just has an extra set under their normal canopy that slide out to double their capacity.

    So now, because you are land "boondocking", in North America, you would be "homeless"!
    It's actually gotta be a nice changeup for you from UMA. You can step "off the boat" and be walking any which way, no dinghy needed.

    Hey Kika!
    Loved your bond girl skit!
    Especially since you did it right in front of the Isola della Bocca Lighthouse. It looks so much like The Maidens tower Lighthouse in Istanbul. Which was made famous by the James Bond movie The World is not Enough.
    Dan, don’t ever buy a Land Rover! You’ll never survive the intermittent what just happened did it fix itself will it happen again problems! Lol! 😒

    I can't believe you are doing the Ecoflow Pro... I need some help. I just did my solar panels on the roof and with your knowledge of electric work... how would you advise going about connecting it directly to the 12v system? There is a plug for 12v 30amp but my concern is when you plug the RV/trailer direct and there is a charge going to the normal battery... this would obviously charge the Ecoflow as well (right?) and is this going to pose a problem? Would love a video of how you would go about this and what to consider. Thanks!

    25:22 -- I can find no prices on this to be released "origami" panel. Do you know the full, expected retail price of the panels?
    So that being said, I for one would not really believe it would be appropriate to compare a cheap panel to a panel that might be far more expensive.
    The high quality Bluetti PV350 (350 Watts) panel will set one back about $800. What will be the price of the 300 Watt origami panel?
    So to make a fair comparison of any panels, they should be at least in the same price point. Or it not, then to highlight the fact they are made in Italy, rather than some place like China. As some people may pay a little bit more if all other things were equal.
    Hope this helps.

    I loved this day in the life video. I'm still amazed that you're able to do the work while the boat is in the water. Great stuff. We'll definietly check out the solar origami since we are in the market for new panels on Neverland. You showed pictures of your editing. I'm wondering what software you use since most of your videos are done with GoPro. Thanks for answering if you have time. Keep up the RV/Boatlife.

    Things I very much admire on your channel: 1) The chemistry between the two of you; 2) How you can deal w/ challenges in a lighter/positive way (at least on camera 🙂); 3) Your seeking of balance in all situations; 4) Your skills to get the job done; 5) The fact you are true partners and do all together... Note: One mystery I see you carry: How is Kika able to be so fit and muscled toned with the life away from the gym? 🤔😀 All the best to both. Stay strong, together and on the route you are.

    Okay in the 90% planning phase, not trying to be too critical here, but seems like you are throwing away 80% of the boat to fix a 20% problem. You guys are to be commended on taking a slip sailor and making it a blue water boat. How do you stay so upbeat!
